_Selene's POV_
The forest stretched endlessly in every direction as I wandered further into its depths. Every step I took felt heavier than the last. My shoulder throbbed where one of the rogues had clawed me and exhaustion weighed me down like a stone. Lyra stayed quiet. Her usual chatter was replaced with a deep concern that hung in the back of my mind.
I stumbled upon a cave just as the sky began to darken. Its jagged entrance was hidden behind overgrown vines and moss-covered rocks. I felt relieved. I had finally found shelter.
"Lyra, do you think it's safe?" I whispered.
"Go in. But stay on alert," she replied.
I pushed the vines aside and stepped into the cool, damp interior. The faint smell of earth and stone greeted me, mingling with the distant trickle of water. The cave was small, just large enough to house me comfortably, and it appeared abandoned. I carefully checked every corner, my eyes scanning for any signs of danger-claw marks, old bones, or lingering scents of predators.
It seemed safe.
I let out a sigh and dropped my bag to the ground. Gathering some dry leaves from outside, I spread them into a rough bed, then pulled a thin blanket from my bag to cover myself. The exhaustion from the day's events finally caught up to me. As I lay down, every muscle in my body screamed in protest, but the promise of rest was too enticing to ignore.
"Goodnight, Selene," Lyra murmured softly.
"Goodnight, Lyra," I whispered back, my eyes fluttering closed.
A sudden, guttural growl jolted me awake. My heart leapt into my throat as my eyes flew open. The cave was pitch black, the only light coming from the faint glow of the moon outside. But it wasn't the darkness that terrified me.
It was the massive bear staring directly into my eyes.
Its breath was hot and heavy, filling the cave with the pungent scent of musk and earth. My heart pounded so loudly I was sure the bear could hear it.
"Stay calm," Lyra said sharply in my mind.
I forced myself to breathe, though panic clawed at my chest. Slowly, I rolled onto my side and shifted. My bones cracked and reshaped. I could feel fur sprouting along my body as I transformed into my wolf. My senses sharpened and Lyra's presence took over.
The bear growled again, its massive head turning toward me. Its dark eyes gleamed with fury.
"I think this is its cave," Lyra muttered.
I didn't reply. There wasn't time. The bear lunged at me, and I leapt to the side, darting toward the entrance of the cave. My paws scraped against the rocky floor as I bolted outside, the cold night air hitting my face.
Run. Just run.
Lyra urged me forward, and I pushed myself faster. My lungs were burning with effort. The bear was right behind me, its heavy footsteps shaking the ground. It roared, a deep, thunderous sound that made my blood run cold.
"It's catching up!" I gasped in my mind.
"Don't panic! You can outrun it!"
I veered left, weaving through trees and leaping over fallen logs. My mind raced with desperation. I didn't want to fight this bear. It was too big, too strong.
The bear roared again, closer this time. I glanced over my shoulder and saw it gaining on me, its massive frame barreling through the underbrush.
My heart sank.
Then I saw it-a dead end.
My paws skidded to a halt as I reached the edge of a cliff. Below me, a jagged ravine stretched endlessly into darkness. I turned, my chest heaving, and faced the bear as it closed in.
"There's nowhere to go," I whispered to Lyra.
"Then we fight," she replied grimly.
The bear slowed, its massive form towering over me. It roared again and lifted a paw to strike. I braced myself, my claws digging into the dirt.
Suddenly, a deafening crack echoed through the forest.
The bear let out a pained roar, its massive body jerking as blood sprayed from its chest. It staggered, then collapsed to the ground with a heavy thud.
I stared, frozen, as the world seemed to still around me.
A shadow emerged from the trees. Damon.
He held a shotgun in his hands. I could see smoke curling from the barrel. His silver eyes gleamed in the moonlight as he approached the bear's fallen body.
For a moment, I couldn't speak. My mind was a jumbled mess of relief, fear, and confusion.
"You're welcome," Damon said, his voice breaking the silence.
I shifted back into my human form. My body was trembling with adrenaline. "What are you doing here?" I demanded, my voice sharper than I intended.
He smirked and lowered the shotgun. "Saving your life, apparently."
"I didn't ask for your help," I snapped, crossing my arms.
He raised an eyebrow. "No, but you needed it. You would've been bear food if I hadn't shown up."
I opened my mouth to argue, but the words wouldn't come. He wasn't wrong.
"How did you even find me?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.
"I was following you," he admitted casually, as if it were the most normal thing in the world.
"What?"
"You're reckless," he said, stepping closer.
"Wandering through rogue territory, sleeping in caves, running into bears. Someone had to make sure you didn't get yourself killed."
"I don't need a babysitter," I shot back.
He tilted his head, his smirk fading. "No, you need protection. And whether you like it or not, I am going to make sure you stay alive."
I glared at him, frustration and something else-something I couldn't quite name-twisting in my chest. "Why do you even care? You don't know me."
Damon's silver eyes locked onto mine, and for a moment, his expression softened. "Maybe not. But I know what it's like to be alone out here. And I'm not going to stand by and let you get yourself killed."
I didn't know how to respond. His words caught me off guard, leaving me unsure of whether to be angry or grateful.
"I can take care of myself," I muttered, though even I didn't believe it anymore.
He sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. "You keep saying that, but all I have seen so far is you getting into trouble."
I opened my mouth to argue, but he held up a hand to stop me.
"Look," he said, his tone softening. "You don't have to trust me. But at least let me help you. I can take you somewhere safe."
I hesitated. My instincts were screaming at me to say no. But the weight of the day's events pressed down on me, and I knew I couldn't keep running forever.
Before I could respond, Damon stepped closer, his silver eyes piercing into mine. "You don't have to do this alone, Selene."
For a moment, the forest was silent except for the sound of the wind rustling through the trees. I felt the tension between us, thick and almost suffocating.
Then, just as I opened my mouth to reply, a low growl rumbled from the shadows.
Damon stiffened, his expression hardening as he turned toward the sound.
"What now?" I whispered, my voice barely audible.
He didn't answer. Instead, he raised the shotgun again, his eyes scanning the darkness.
The growl came again, louder this time. Whatever was out there, it wasn't friendly.
My heart pounded as I stepped closer to Damon.
"Stay behind me," he said, his voice low and commanding.
I didn't argue.
The growl grew closer, and I caught a glimpse of movement in the shadows. My stomach twisted with dread.
"Damon," I whispered, my voice shaking. "What is it?"
He didn't respond, his focus locked on whatever was out there.
And then it appeared-a massive figure, its eyes glowing in the darkness. It wasn't a bear. It wasn't a wolf.
It was something worse.
