Chapter 6 The Man She Forgot

Emilia sat in the dimly lit library of Julian's penthouse, her fingers tracing the spine of an old leather-bound book, though she wasn't really reading. Her mind was too cluttered, tangled in the web of confusion that had become her reality. The past few days had been a blur-Julian's careful attention, his insistence that they belonged together, the way he skillfully dodged her questions about her past.

And then there was the dream.

No, not a dream. A memory.

A man's voice had echoed in her mind, rich and full of warmth, whispering her name like a prayer. But it wasn't Julian's voice. It was someone else's.

Someone she had loved.

A sharp knock at the door startled her, and she turned just as Julian stepped inside. He was impeccable as always, dressed in a tailored black suit, his piercing blue eyes watching her closely.

"You've barely touched your breakfast," he remarked, his tone light, but she could hear the concern beneath it. Or was it something else?

"I wasn't hungry," she admitted.

Julian sighed, walking over to her, his movements slow, calculated. "Emilia, I know this is difficult. But I'm doing everything I can to help you. I just need you to trust me."

She looked up at him, searching his face for something-anything-that would unlock the missing pieces of her past. But all she saw was a man who was too perfect, too polished.

"Trust," she echoed, the word foreign on her tongue.

His jaw tightened ever so slightly, but his smile remained in place. "Yes. Trust."

Before she could respond, the sound of the front door opening caught her attention. Julian's entire body tensed, his gaze flickering toward the hallway.

"Wait here," he instructed before swiftly exiting the room.

But Emilia didn't wait.

Heart pounding, she stood up and moved toward the door, peering into the hallway just in time to see Julian speaking in hushed tones with a man she didn't recognize.

At least, she thought she didn't recognize him.

But then their eyes met.

And something inside her cracked wide open.

The man's breath hitched, his dark brown eyes widening in shock. "Emilia?" His voice was hoarse, disbelieving.

Her stomach twisted. She knew that voice. It was the one from her dream-the one that had whispered her name with such tenderness, such longing.

Julian stepped in front of the man, blocking his view of her. "This is not a good time," he said, his voice low and firm.

But the man ignored him, pushing past Julian and striding toward her. "Emilia, it's me. It's-"

A sharp pain sliced through her head, and suddenly, flashes of memories assaulted her.

Laughter under the stars. Strong arms holding her close. A whispered promise.

"I will always find my way back to you."

The air rushed out of her lungs as she stumbled back, her vision swimming.

Julian caught her before she could fall, his grip tightening around her arms. "She's still recovering," he snapped at the man. "You're not helping."

The man clenched his fists, his gaze never leaving hers. "Emilia, please. You know me. Just-just try to remember."

She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to hold onto the fleeting memories before they slipped away again. But it was too much.

Too fast.

Too overwhelming.

"Take him out of here," Julian ordered, his voice ice-cold.

"Emilia, don't listen to him!" The man's voice was desperate now, filled with something that made her chest ache. "You don't belong here. You belong with me."

And then he was gone.

The door slammed shut, and silence settled over the room like a suffocating blanket.

Julian exhaled sharply, his hands still gripping her arms. "Are you okay?"

No.

No, she was not okay.

Because in that moment, she realized something terrifying.

The man who had just walked out the door wasn't a stranger at all.

He was the man she had forgotten.
