Chapter 4 THE ESCAPE.

THE ESCAPE.

CLARA'S POV

The past few days have been hectic for me. It has been work, work, and more work. I had now gotten fully acclimatised to my new environment. Neither Madam Choice nor Pat had said anything concerning my unfortunate encounter with the boss, and I was really grateful about that.

"Maybe you should talk to the doctor at the clinic. You clearly are unwell." Pat said as she slid right beside me.

"Let me rinse them out for you," she offered and took over doing the dishes for me.

"I intend to go to the clinic once I'm off duty."

"Good," she responded.

There was a brief silence.

"But I'm scared." I broke the silence.

Pat nodded in understanding.

I was feeling dizzy, feeling weak, throwing up, and having a delayed period and every other sign that indicates pregnancy.

"You should be scared. It is normal to be afraid, but it is better to ascertain for a fact if you are pregnant or not so that you can make your decisions when there's still time."

***

"You are pregnant and well into the first trimester. You've been pregnant for a while now." The doctor announced to me.

I felt instant chills.

"That's not possible. Check me for a second time.

He shook his head. "I'm one hundred percent sure that you are pregnant, and you need to take care of yourself because you are in a delicate state." He spoke kindly to me.

"You said I've been pregnant for a while now; if I was, I'm sure I would know." I was in absolute denial.

"Not everyone learns about their pregnancy on time. Some find out when it is too late and far gone." He explained.

"I want it removed." "Terminate the flipping baby!" I screamed.

"I'm sorry, I can't."

I stared at him like I was going to murder him, "What do you mean?" "What nonsense are you saying? I can't have this baby, and I will not have it!"

I angrily proceeded to leave the doctor's office, but he followed me.

"Your uterus is at risk, and your life is at risk. Do you want to have a ruptured womb? Or do you want to die during the termination process? This pregnancy is a high-risk pregnancy; don't do anything that will endanger your future or your life."

I remained in a daze while he talked.

My mind raced, so I was really stuck with a pregnancy that can't be terminated?

"Besides, you're having twins." This last statement drew me out of the daze, and it was the last thing I heard before I fell to the ground.

"W-WH- Tw-iins? Not possible." I muttered, and the next minute, all I saw was darkness.

***

Voices in the background woke me up. I recognised one voice, and it was Pat's. I opened my eyes to see the doctor hovering over me.

"Oh, thank goodness, you're awake."

I tried to sit up swiftly, and I immediately felt a strong pain at the back of my head.

"Easy there. " Pat put me back to bed carefully.

"How long have I been here?" I asked.

"Five days," Pat answered.

I tried to get up again. "Work. I have to go to work."

"Madam is aware that you are ill. Relax." Pat assured me.

"Does she know that I am-?"

"Pregnant?" Pat finished. I nodded.

"I hope not. I told her that you were down with the flu."

In a few days, I was discharged and back to work. My mind was troubled about my new circumstances. I knew that I could not tell the boss or anyone else.

I lay on my bed on this particular night, contemplating what choices I should make when I heard whispers from behind me. And a few moments later, gunshots filled the air. Pat and I lay flat on the floor and prayed to God that whatever was happening outside wouldn't find its way into our room.

"MOVE!" someone burst into our room.

Pat and I scurried outside like two little girls. More gunshots were heard, and fear gripped me. It was in that moment I made my decision: "If I make it out alive, I will never raise my children in this environment." I muttered to myself and closed my eyes, waiting for it to be all over.

"Oh, I can tell that you're awake. You can open your eyes now. Welcome back, child." Madam Choice's husky voice woke me up.

I looked around, and once again I was in the clinic.

"And your babies are fine too." She smirked.

I got tense up.

"What? You really thought that I wouldn't find out? You were hospitalised once, and now you were found bleeding all over the floor after the attack. I had to find out, and my suspicions were right. You are having ANTONIO'S CHILD.

I froze. Calling out his name made everything seem much realer.

"And you will inform him," she ordered.

I shook my head. "NO, NO.... I won't."

"Yes, child, you will. Or I will do the informing myself."

I shook my head more aggressively.

"I've been caring for Antonio since he was an infant up until now. He is literally my son, and any child of his is my grandchild. You'll be well taken care of, I assure you."

"You can't speak for him." How dare she act like she would force him to accept the babies?

I paid her no more attention and plotted my escape.

I informed Pat about my plans, and she was in full support and promised to keep it a secret.

"You should use a pseudonym so that no one would be able to identify you. I know someone who can create a brand new identity for you, and you'll be untraceable. I'll give you his contact address; go to him immediately after you leave here. " She said.

"Take care, Clara Davidson; please don't die..." We chuckled at her joke. "...stay safe. Hopefully we meet again in the future under better circumstances." She kissed my forehead.

The guards I had tipped the night before opened the various gates for me, and I successfully left the Green mansion, or so I thought, until I heard people running after me.

"Get the bitch!"

I looked back to see guards chasing after me. I had been caught. Will I be executed on the grounds of breach of contract?

Oh, these mafia people never showed mercy; I was doomed.
