Chapter 2 The Perfect Facade

The grand ballroom of the Astoria Hotel sparkled beneath an elaborate crystal chandelier. Laughter, clinking glasses , and a low hum of admiration filled the air. Tonight's charity ball was the season's social event, vying for the city's most powerful elites - billionaires, politicians, celebrities, everyone invited to bathe in a warm bath of wealth and philanthropy.

And he was there with his envious couple: Alex Carter and Mia Carter.

Alex, in a fitted black tuxedo, smiled a boyish smile as he greeted movers and shakers. He clasped Mia's hand with just the right amount of firmness - not too tight, not too loose - just the right degree between possession and gentleness. Mia wore a glamorous emerald-green dress that clung to her svelte figure and smiled brightly, her back straight and her demeanor graceful.

They were the ideal couple, the perfect success story, to the world. The power couple. The dream.

But, behind all the bright lights and rehearsed smiles, Mia sensed that something wasn't right.

A Lingering Doubt

Mia couldn't identify when the distance between them had started. Perhaps it was gradual - a slow creeping shadow she'd been willing to overlook for too long. Or maybe she was just deluding herself, overthinking every small moment.

But tonight, it was impossible to ignore.

Alex was there, physically, but his mind was somewhere else. His laughter was a beat late, his eyes darting to his phone more than he usually did. And when he murmured sweet words in her ear, there was a kind of artifice to it - as if he were playing to an audience instead of talking to his wife.

Then there was her.

One Woman Mia had seen but never thought much about. In a slick red dress, her long brunette hair draping over one shoulder, she stood on the other side of the room. Rachel Thompson.

Mia had seen her at other events, always hovering on the sidelines, always watching Alex a little too closely.

And tonight? She wasn't just watching.

Rachel locked eyes with Alex, and for the briefest of moments something passed between them. Something unspoken.

Something intimate.

Mia's stomach twisted.

She looked at Alex, who had just finished shaking hands with an investor. "Who is that woman?" Her voice was light, flippant - acting as if it didn't matter.

Alex hardly looked over at Rachel. "She's a business associate."

The answer was too quick. Too rehearsed.

Mi felt that same warmth.

A's chest hotness of suspicion.

A Perfectly Timed Distraction

Before Mia could follow up, though, a voice cut in.

"Ladies and gentlemen, if I may have your attention!" The host of the event was an older man whose dramatic voice filled the auditorium. "How about we celebrate generosity, love, and the power of giving tonight. But no couple personifies these values more than Alex and Mia Carter. Their impact on our foundation is life-changing. So let's give them a round of applause!"

A spotlight swept across them, and the ballroom burst into cheers.

Alex tugged Mia into him, effortlessly gripping her waist. Mia gasped. He kissed her temple and to the crowd, it was a gesture of piety.

It felt like a performance to Mia.

As applause rang through the room, she whispered through her pained smile, "Why do I feel like I'm standing next to a stranger?"

Alex chuckled mildly for the audience's benefit, then leaned in and whispered into her ear, "Because your imagination got the better of you, darling."

His tone was soothing. But Mia wasn't soothed.

Because deep down, she knew.

Something was terribly wrong.

The Initial Chink in the Facade:

The gala din carried on, and Mia forced the blooming heaviness in her chest aside. Perhaps she was simply imagining things. Perhaps she was reading too much into Alex's distant behavior due to the stress he'd been under.

But that reassurance was fragile, and a few hours later, as they pulled back into their driveway, that reassurance was shattered.

Alex entered the master bedroom first; he unknotted his tie, phone clutched in his hand. Mia came behind, taking off her earrings.

Then, she saw it.

It was his phone, lying on the nightstand. A message appeared on the screen.

UNKNOWN NUMBER: You were amazing tonight. She doesn't suspect a thing.

Mia's breath hitched.

Her hands turned ice cold.

Her world - the perfect illusion she had relied on for so long - started to crumble.

As Mia makes a play for the phone, Alex spots her.
