Chapter 4 Betrayal Along the Way

Charlotte stared at her screen, her heart pounding as she reread the encrypted messages. The vague language, the mentions of specific financial accounts, and the tone of urgency all pointed to one conclusion: Evelyn Grayson wasn't just complicit. She was involved in something far more sinister.

She grabbed her phone and dialed Alex's number. It rang twice before his sharp voice answered, "What is it, Bennett?"

"You need to see this," Charlotte said, her tone urgent. "I just found a series of encrypted messages in the internal records. They're between Evelyn and someone else-a third party. I can't confirm the identity yet, but it's bad."

There was a pause on the other end of the line. Then Alex's voice, cold and controlled, came through. "I'll be there in thirty minutes."

When Alex arrived at the office, the tension in the room was palpable. Charlotte was still at her desk, surrounded by stacks of documents and her laptop glowing with incriminating evidence. She barely looked up as he walked in, his presence both commanding and unsettling.

"Show me," Alex said, his tone clipped.

Charlotte turned the laptop toward him, highlighting the messages. "Here. These were buried deep within your company's internal servers. Whoever sent them knew how to cover their tracks, but they slipped up on the encryption. The same IP address links back to Evelyn's personal email."

Alex's jaw tightened as he read the messages. His expression was unreadable, but Charlotte could see the flicker of pain in his eyes. "This doesn't prove she's working with Kane," he said finally. "It could be a setup."

"Maybe," Charlotte replied. "But it's not just the messages. There's more." She swiped to another file, showing bank transfers that traced back to Kane's overseas accounts. "These transactions link directly to Victor Kane. And they were authorized by someone using Evelyn's access codes."

Alex's fists clenched at his sides. "She said she wasn't involved. She looked me in the eye and denied it."

Charlotte hesitated. "It's possible she's being coerced. We don't know the full story yet. But if she's not the one pulling the strings, we need to figure out who is-and fast."

Alex rubbed a hand across his face, his composure cracking for the first time. "She's my sister, Bennett. I don't want to believe she'd betray me like this."

Charlotte softened, her voice gentle. "I get it, Alex. But this isn't just about family. It's about your company, your future. If Evelyn is part of this, you need to confront her. We can't afford to let this slide."

Alex nodded slowly, his expression hardening. "You're right. But before I confront her, I want more proof. Find me something concrete."

"Already working on it," Charlotte said. "But there's one more thing you should know."

Alex's eyes narrowed. "What?"

Charlotte leaned forward, lowering her voice. "Someone on your inner team is hiding things. I came across references to a meeting between Kane and Marcus Steele."

Alex froze. "Marcus?"

"Yes," she confirmed. "There's no direct evidence yet, but it looks like he's been keeping tabs on the investigation. He might know more than he's letting on."

Alex's face darkened, a storm of anger swirling in his eyes. "Marcus has been my friend and advisor for years. If he's involved in this..."

Charlotte interrupted, her tone firm. "If he's involved, you need to handle it carefully. He knows how you operate, Alex. That makes him dangerous."

Alex nodded grimly. "I'll deal with Marcus. But I want you to keep digging. Find out exactly what he's hiding-and why."

The following day, Charlotte focused all her efforts on Marcus Steele. She combed through his financial records, emails, and travel history, piecing together a timeline that painted a disturbing picture. Marcus had been meeting with Victor Kane regularly over the past six months, and there were multiple references to "the plan" in their correspondence.

But the smoking gun came in the form of an encrypted folder on Marcus's company laptop. It took hours for Charlotte to crack the password, but when she finally opened it, her breath caught in her throat.

Inside were scanned copies of contracts, financial statements, and legal documents-all pointing to a coordinated effort to frame Alex for embezzlement. The evidence was damning, and it all led back to Kane.

Charlotte picked up her phone, ready to call Alex, when a sudden noise behind her made her freeze. She turned slowly, her heart racing, and saw a shadowy figure standing in the doorway.

Before she could react, the figure lunged at her.

Charlotte's instincts kicked in as she scrambled out of her chair, narrowly avoiding the man's outstretched hand. "What the hell-!" she shouted, but her words were cut off as he grabbed her arm and yanked her toward him.

"Stay quiet," the man growled, his voice low and threatening. He was wearing a ski mask, but his build was large and intimidating.

Charlotte struggled, her mind racing. She kicked at his shin, hard, and he let out a grunt of pain, loosening his grip just enough for her to break free. She grabbed the nearest object-a heavy paperweight-and swung it at him with all her strength.

The man staggered, but he didn't go down. "You're making this harder than it needs to be," he snarled, advancing toward her again.

Charlotte backed away, her hand fumbling for her phone. She managed to hit the emergency speed dial for Alex before the man lunged again, knocking the phone out of her hand.

"What do you want?" she demanded, her voice shaking but defiant.

"Just doing a job," the man said coldly. "You're digging where you shouldn't be. Consider this a warning."

He grabbed her laptop and smashed it against the desk, the screen shattering into pieces. Charlotte felt a surge of anger and fear as she lunged forward, trying to stop him, but he shoved her back with enough force to send her crashing into the wall.

As Charlotte struggled to get to her feet, the man turned and bolted out the door, leaving destruction in his wake.

Minutes later, Alex burst into the office, his face a mask of fury and concern. "Charlotte!" he called out, his voice echoing through the empty space.

"I'm here," she said weakly, pulling herself up from the floor. She winced as pain shot through her shoulder, but she forced herself to stand.

Alex rushed to her side, his eyes scanning her for injuries. "What happened? Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," Charlotte said, though her voice wavered. "Someone broke in. He tried to stop me from accessing the files."

Alex's jaw clenched. "Did he hurt you?"

"I'm okay," she repeated, though the bruises forming on her arm told a different story. "But he destroyed my laptop. All the evidence I found-it's gone."

Alex's expression darkened. "We'll recover it. I'll get my IT team on it immediately."

Charlotte shook her head. "No. This wasn't just about the files, Alex. It was a message. Whoever's behind this, they're not just targeting you anymore. They're coming after me, too."

Alex's eyes blazed with anger. "Then they've made a mistake. No one threatens my people and gets away with it."

Charlotte gave him a faint, tired smile. "I didn't realize I was 'your people.'"

"You are now," Alex said firmly. "And I'm not going to let anything happen to you."

As Alex helped Charlotte gather what was left of her belongings, her phone buzzed on the floor where it had fallen. She picked it up, her heart sinking as she saw the message on the screen.

Unknown Number: "You're in over your head. Back off, or next time, you won't be so lucky."

Charlotte handed the phone to Alex, her expression grim. "We're running out of time."

Alex's jaw tightened as he read the message. "Then we need to hit back harder."

Charlotte met his gaze, her voice steady despite the fear in her chest. "How far are you willing to go, Alex?"

Alex's eyes burned with determination. "As far as it takes."
