"I'm full." With that, Lexie stood up, placed her plate and fork in the sink, washed her hands, and went to knock on Kaelyn's door across the road.
"Lexie. What's up?" Kaelyn wasn't surprised at all that Lexie would come knocking, but she showed no intention of inviting her in. She just stood inside the door, looking at the visibly angry Lexie outside.
"Kaelyn, I hadn't offended you lately, had I? What nonsense had you been telling my parents again?"
At seventeen or eighteen, Kaelyn was acting like a grade-schooler, always running to snitch at every opportunity!
Kaelyn replied innocently, "I didn't make anything up. It's true that Simon declared in front of the whole school that he wanted to pursue you. It's also true that you agreed to his pursuit and said you'd wait for him at Aldridge University. I didn't fabricate a single thing."
Lexie was furious. The reason she said this was that she didn't know Simon or his abilities. If he had any potential, even if there was only a zero point one percent chance that he was serious, her response could be seen as encouragement. However, someone who could make such an outrageous statement in public, she figured he probably wasn't that capable, so her answer was essentially a rejection.
She had never expected her good intentions to be twisted by Kaelyn, which caused her so much trouble!
"You probably don't know, but the neighbors have heard about your situation. Everyone's talking about it-acing the exams effortlessly and already starting a romance before even entering college. It's making everyone green with envy!"
Lexie was about to explode with anger. What kind of grudge did Kaelyn have against her? It was one thing to spread rumors to their parents, but spreading it like wildfire to everyone else? No wonder the neighbors looked at her differently when she came home this afternoon!
"Kaelyn, what exactly is your problem with me? Do you really have to cause trouble for me behind my back like this?"
"My problem with you? You're the pride of the Gilbert family. How could a plain Jane like me dare to have a problem with you?"
Lexie opened her mouth to say more, but Kaelyn cut her off, effectively dismissing her. "It's late. I need to get back to studying. If you want to chat, come earlier next time. It's just a few steps back to your house, so I won't walk you out."
Watching the door close, Lexie wished she could kick it open and drag Kaelyn out for a good thrashing.
