Chapter 2 Conflicts Arise

One day, I was in the middle of a meeting at the office when my husband called, saying the baby wouldn't drink milk and was crying uncontrollably. He asked me to come home.

I felt a bit flustered, but a colleague reminded me that we had installed a surveillance camera at home. I could check on the baby's situation first before rushing back.

I turned on the monitor and the camera was pointed right at the living room.

I saw Ms. Jones, sitting on the couch, legs crossed, engrossed in something on her phone. She didn't seem to notice anything else around her.

Meanwhile, Jeffery was holding the baby, gently rocking him, though a bit clumsily, in an attempt to soothe him.

It was clear from his movements that he wasn't very experienced, and the baby looked uncomfortable. Thinking that Ms. Jones might be more experienced with babies, I took out my phone and sent her a message.

"Ms. Jones, could you please hold the baby for me? I don't think my dad knows how to calm him down. Thank you so much!"

Through the camera, I saw Ms. Jones open the message. Then she looked startled and began glancing around the living room in confusion -until she noticed me watching through the camera.

She quickly put down her phone, flustered, and took the baby from Jeffery.

Once she held him properly, the baby immediately stopped crying. My heart finally settled a bit.

After work, I went home.

My husband was sitting at the dining table, his face dark and brooding. He didn't look happy at all.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

He reached for a chair beside him and picked up a surveillance camera, now torn apart and in pieces.

I felt my cheeks flush with embarrassment. "What happened? Why did you take it down?"

At that moment, Jeffery walked out of the bedroom next to the living room, his expression stern. "Just explain to us why you installed a surveillance camera in the house? Who exactly are you trying to monitor?"

I was at a loss for words but forced myself to stay calm and explain. "Dad, before you and Ms. Jones moved in to help us with the baby, we had hired a nanny. The camera was just for me to keep an eye on her. Ever since you both came, I haven't even checked it. If my husband hadn't called me about the baby crying, I would've completely forgotten it was there."

"Do you really expect us to believe that?" Jeffery interrupted me. "It's obvious you don't trust me or Susan to take care of the baby. If that's how you feel, maybe we should just leave!"
