Chapter 5 The Weight of a New Dawn

Lilith awoke to the soft glow of morning light filtering through the sheer black curtains draped around her bed. The air in her room was cool, carrying the faint scent of lavender and old parchment, a lingering trace of the spell books she had spent the night poring over.

Her bed, a grand piece of dark mahogany with intricate carvings of ancient sigils, was layered with deep crimson and obsidian silk sheets that pooled around her like liquid shadow. The thick pillows, embroidered with golden threads of protective runes, felt unfamiliar beneath her restless head-her dreams had been filled with too many whispers of the past, too many echoes of a world now severed.

With a slow exhale, she pushed back the covers and set her feet on the cold stone floor, the touch jolting her further awake. Around her, the room stood in perfect stillness-shelves lined with ancient tomes, vials of shimmering elixirs, and an assortment of candles, some burned to the wick from late-night musings. A lone mirror, framed in twisted iron and ivy, reflected her slightly disheveled state-wild raven-black curls tumbling over her shoulders, her nightgown slipping off one shoulder, exposing the smooth expanse of her collarbone.

She moved with purpose, pulling on a fitted, dark blue tunic cinched at the waist with a leather belt, her movements practiced yet slightly weighed by the thoughts clouding her mind. Today, the border gates were being built-the final, physical mark of the division that had torn their world apart. And she needed to see it for herself.

Fastening a cloak around her shoulders, she reached for her spell bag, brushing her fingers over the worn fabric, its weight a comforting presence at her side. With one last glance at her room, she turned on her heel and stepped into the uncertain morning, ready to face what lay ahead.

Lilith stepped out of her room, the wooden door closing softly behind her. The corridors of her home were dimly lit, the morning sun barely creeping through the arched windows along the stone walls. The faint scent of burning sage and crushed herbs lingered in the air-her mother's daily rituals already underway.

As she descended the spiral staircase, her fingers traced the cool iron railing, her mind still clouded with lingering thoughts of the division. The halls, once filled with laughter and gatherings, now seemed quieter, heavier with unspoken burdens.

Entering the kitchen, she found Seraphina standing by the long wooden table, carefully pouring a dark herbal brew into two cups. The scent was strong-an earthy blend meant to awaken the senses. A plate of bread, honey, and dried fruits sat between them, a simple yet nourishing meal.

"You're up early," Seraphina noted without looking up, placing one cup before Lilith as she took a seat.

Lilith picked up a piece of bread, tearing it absently. "The gates are being built today. I need to see it for myself."

Seraphina's hands stilled for a fraction of a second before she took a slow sip of her drink. "So it begins."

Lilith glanced at her mother, searching her face for emotion, but Seraphina was unreadable. "It doesn't feel real yet," Lilith admitted. "That there will be a wall between us and them. That what was once one world will now be two."

Seraphina finally met her gaze. "Real or not, it is happening. And you should remember that walls do more than divide lands, Lilith. They divide people, beliefs... hearts."

Lilith tightened her grip around her cup, the warmth seeping into her skin. "Do you think this is really the end?"

Seraphina's lips pressed together. "No. But it is the beginning of something we cannot yet understand."

A silence stretched between them, heavy and contemplative. After finishing her meal, Lilith stood, fastening her cloak. "I should go."

Seraphina didn't stop her. She only nodded, her voice softer this time. "Be careful, Lilith. The past lingers in places like that."

With those words weighing on her, Lilith stepped outside. The morning air was brisk, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant fires. The sky, once vast and open, now felt smaller under the weight of change.

Lilith pulled her cloak tighter around her shoulders as she stepped out of the house, the crisp morning air biting against her skin. The scent of damp earth mixed with the lingering smoke from distant fires, a reminder of the battles that had paved the way for the division.

Waiting at the edge of the courtyard was her horse-a sleek black mare named Nyx, her coat shimmering like obsidian under the pale morning light. The creature pawed at the ground restlessly, sensing the tension that hung in the air. Lilith approached, running a gentle hand along Nyx's strong neck before gripping the saddle and swinging herself up in one fluid motion.

As she settled into the saddle, she glanced back at the house - her home, her sanctuary - before exhaling sharply and giving Nyx a slight nudge. The mare responded instantly, surging forward with powerful strides, her hooves kicking up damp soil as they tore down the narrow path.

The wind whipped through Lilith's hair, pulling at the strands as she rode, the landscape blurring past her. The towering trees of the witches' domain loomed overhead, their ancient branches swaying as if whispering secrets of the past.

She pressed on, guiding Nyx toward the border. The farther she rode, the more the terrain shifted-the lush greenery giving way to rugged lands, where the scars of war still marred the earth. In the distance, the rising structure of the border gates came into view, its presence stark against the morning horizon.

Lilith tightened her grip on the reins.

She was riding toward a future that had already been decided. A future built on separation, betrayal, and walls meant to last forever.

And yet, something deep inside her whispered that this was only the beginning. But with how things are going now, it seems like the end.
