Chapter 5 The Binding Shadows

Lyla sat in the clearing, her heart pounding as Eli's words settled over her. "You're right. It's time you knew everything."

The moonlight filtered through the canopy of trees, casting long shadows across the forest floor. Mason stood a few feet away, his arms crossed and his gaze fixed on Eli, clearly disapproving of whatever was about to happen.

"You've said that before," Lyla said, her voice steady despite the chaos inside her. "But you haven't told me everything. No more vague warnings or cryptic statements. I want the truth."

Eli hesitated, his jaw tightening as if weighing the consequences of what he was about to say. Finally, he took a deep breath. "Fine. But you need to promise me something first."

"What?"

"That you'll keep an open mind and that you won't run," he said, his green eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her chest tighten.

Lyla swallowed hard and nodded. "I promise."

Mason let out a frustrated sigh. "This is a mistake, Eli."

Eli ignored him.

Eli began to pace, his footsteps slow and deliberate. "Silverwood has always been a place of power. Long before the packs existed, this forest was alive with magic. The land itself has a will, a consciousness, and it chooses who it allows to stay. That's why the packs were formed to protect the balance and to keep outsiders from abusing the forest's power."

"And the rogues?" Lyla asked.

"They're wolves who have rejected the packs, choosing chaos over order. They've always been a problem, but lately, something has changed. They're more organized, more... deliberate."

Lyla frowned. "What does that have to do with me?"

Eli stopped pacing and turned to face her. "Everything. The forest doesn't just call people here without a reason. You're here because you're important, Lyla. I don't know why yet, but I can feel it."

"Important how?" she pressed.

Before Eli could answer, Mason stepped forward, his expression hard. "We shouldn't be involving her in this. She's not one of us."

"Not yet," Eli said quietly.

The words hung in the air like a challenge. Lyla's heart skipped a beat as she realized what he was implying. "Wait you think I'm supposed to... to join you?"

Eli met her gaze, his expression unreadable. "That's not up to me. It's up to the forest."

Mason scoffed, shaking his head. "This is insane. She doesn't belong here, Eli."

"She does," Eli shot back, his voice firm. "You know she does. The forest wouldn't have called her otherwise."

Lyla stood, her fists clenched at her sides. "I'm standing right here, you know. Maybe instead of arguing about me, you could talk to me."

Eli's lips twitched in a small smile, but Mason's scowl deepened.

"Fine," Mason said, his tone laced with sarcasm. "If you're so convinced she belongs, let her prove it."

Eli frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"A trial," Mason said, his eyes gleaming with challenge. "If she wants to be part of this world, she needs to prove she can handle it."

"That's not how this works," Eli said, his voice low and dangerous.

"Why not?" Mason countered. "If she's as special as you think, she'll pass."

Lyla looked between them, her heart racing. "What kind of trial?"

Mason smirked. "A simple one. Spend the night in the forest alone."

Eli's eyes flashed with anger. "That's ridiculous. She doesn't even know how to protect herself."

"She'll learn," Mason said, crossing his arms. "Or she'll run back to wherever she came from."

Lyla squared her shoulders, her gaze steady. "I'll do it."

Eli's head snapped toward her, his expression a mix of shock and frustration. "Lyla, you don't have to"

"Yes, I do," she interrupted. "If this is the only way to get answers, then I'll do it."

Mason's smirk widened. "Good. Then it's settled."

The forest was different at night. The air was colder, the shadows deeper, and every rustle of leaves or snap of a twig set Lyla's nerves on edge. She carried a small flashlight, but its beam seemed pitifully weak against the vast darkness surrounding her.

She walked for what felt like hours, her breath fogging in the cool air. Every so often, she would stop and listen, half-expecting to hear footsteps behind her. But the only sounds were the hoot of an owl and the distant howl of a wolf.

You're okay, she told herself. You can do this.

But as the night wore on, her confidence began to waver. The forest felt alive, watching her with unseen eyes. She couldn't shake the feeling that she wasn't alone.

Suddenly, a low growl rumbled through the darkness.

Lyla froze, her heart pounding as she scanned the shadows. The growl came again, closer this time, and she turned slowly to see a pair of glowing yellow eyes staring at her from the underbrush.

A wolf stepped into the light, its fur dark and matted. It bared its teeth, its growl deep and menacing.

Lyla's mind raced. She didn't know how to fight a wolf let alone survive an attack. She took a shaky step back, her flashlight trembling in her hand.

"Stay calm," she whispered to herself. "Don't run."

The wolf snarled, crouching low as if preparing to pounce.

And then, out of nowhere, another wolf appeared this one larger and with sleek grey fur. It lunged at the rogue, its powerful jaws snapping. The two wolves clashed, their growls echoing through the forest.

Lyla stumbled back, her eyes wide as she watched the battle. The grey wolf was faster and stronger, driving the rogue back into the shadows.

When the fight was over, the grey wolf turned to Lyla, its green eyes glowing in the darkness.

"Eli?" she whispered.

The wolf nodded, and relief flooded through her.

Eli led her back to the clearing, shifting back into his human form as they approached. His shirt was torn, and there was a small cut on his arm, but he didn't seem to notice.

"You shouldn't have done that," he said, his voice tight with anger.

"I didn't have a choice," Lyla shot back.

"Yes, you did," Eli said, his green eyes blazing. "You could have told Mason to go to hell. You didn't have to prove anything to him or me."

Lyla crossed her arms, her jaw set. "Maybe I didn't. But I needed to prove something to myself."

Eli stared at her for a long moment, then sighed. "You're stubborn, you know that?"

"You're just figuring that out now?" she said, a small smile tugging at her lips.

Despite himself, Eli chuckled. "Fair enough."

Mason appeared then, his expression smug. "Looks like she survived. Barely."

"Back off, Mason," Eli growled.

Mason held up his hands. "Relax. I'll admit, she's tougher than I thought."

Lyla rolled her eyes. "Thanks for the vote of confidence."

As they walked back to town, Eli fell into step beside her.

"You were brave tonight," he said quietly.

"I was terrified," Lyla admitted.

"Bravery isn't the absence of fear," Eli said. "It's facing it anyway."

Lyla glanced at him, surprised by the depth of his words. For the first time, she felt a flicker of something more than curiosity toward him, something deeper, more personal.

"Thank you," she said softly.

Eli smiled, and for a moment, the world felt a little less uncertain.

But as they reached the edge of the forest, Lyla couldn't shake the feeling that her journey was just beginning and that the shadows of Silverwood held more secrets than she could ever imagine.
