Chapter 5 She Was The One

Six Years Later

R.T Industrial Limited.

The air in the room seemed to get colder as the devilishly handsome man kept tapping lightly on the desk. His eyes were closed and he seemed to be in deep thought.

Everyone in the room was sweating profusely as their head remained bowed. The meeting was going in the wrong direction even when they had thoroughly checked their proposals.

One of the men in charge of the presentation cast a pleading look to the man standing erect behind the cold man.

The profusely sweating man seems to be screaming." Please do something, Mr. Greg before President Rex has my head!"

The latter just shook his head feeling helpless too. He knew that after what happened last night between Rex and his grandmother, he was going to bring down the roof on everyone!

Even Greg wasn't out of the wrath!

" If you are tired of working here, you can as well send in your resignation and get the hell out of my office." President Rex calmly said, his eyes squinted as he shot a deadly glare at all the people in the room.

Without waiting for their reply, he turned around and left the conference room. He silently cursed as he made his way to his office.

Rex knew he shouldn't vent his anger on these people but he just couldn't help it. His grandmother was hellbent on making him frustrated.

As Rex made his way towards the private elevator, his mind went back to that night six years ago. How could he have mistaken an innocent girl for Ruby? He even took her first time.

He knew it was wrong so he tried fixing his wrong doings by giving her his number but she didn't call. It's been six years yet he couldn't find her.

Rex even went back to the bar but still there was no information about the girl because he couldn't give proper details. They claimed most of their workers were just casual people and they usually don't have detailed information on such workers.

Rex was so angry at their unprofessionalism. How could a company hire someone without having her vital information?

With swift strides, he finally got to his office and slumped down on the office couch, staring out the window of his high-rise office building, his mind elsewhere.

His usual calm and collected demeanour has given way to frustration and unease. Who exactly was that girl and why was it so difficult to trace her for so many years?

His mind drifts to the argument he had with his grandmother last night about his marriage alliance with Diane Makerson. Even though Diane was a childhood friend, he wasn't ready to be tied down to someone like her.

He only agreed to the engagement six years ago because of his grandmother's threat.

Rex lets out a deep sigh, feeling trapped and suffocated by the expectations placed upon him. His mind races with thoughts of the woman he can't forget, and the life he was supposed to lead.

Rex's usual confidence and control seemed to be slipping away, replaced by a sense of restlessness, discontent and anger. A beep on his phone reminded him of what he dreaded.

The meeting with Diane and his grandmother.

Just when he was about to stand up, Greg finally walked in with a grin plastered on his face.

"Hey, man, are you ready for this?" Greg asked, his face indicating he was enjoying Rex's frustrations.

" Yes... just as I am ready to call Grandpa Anderson," Rex shot at him calmly.

The smile on Greg's face vanished into thin air and he adjusted himself. How could he forget this iceberg was very brutal? The last thing he wanted was to go back to his grandfather.

That old man would bundle him straight to the family business.

Then with a flattering tone, Greg said." Maybe marrying her isn't as bad as you think. You can actually fall in love with her."

Rex cracks a small smile. "True. But at least if I was in love with her, I wouldn't have to pretend to be interested in marrying some woman just to secure the family fortune."

Greg shrugs. "Stranger things have happened, right? Besides, it's not like you have a lot of other options at the moment."

Then after a brief pause, Greg continued." Is this about that lady? The one from six years ago?"

With a sigh, Rex finally admitted." It's strange but I just can't get her off my mind, Greg."

Why was it difficult to erase that night from his memories?

"Have you found out anything about her again?" Rex breaks the silence, glancing at Greg.

Greg's expression turns serious. "Actually, I've been trying to track her down for you. But it's like she vanished into thin air."

Rex's face fell, disappointment etched on his features. "I really wanted to see her again, apologise for how things ended between us."

Greg nodded understandingly. "I know, man. I've been trying. But it's like she was a ghost."

Then with a mischievous grin, Greg seemed to bounce back to his cheerful self." Do you perhaps think you slept with a ghost? Ha! You gave your first time to a ghost?"

With a murderous aura, Rex shot him a glare that made Greg run out of the office in fright. The last thing he wanted was for Rex to bundle him back to his grandfather.

There was a knock on the door and his secretary walked in.

"Good morning, Sir," A smartly dressed woman with a professional look bowed her head slightly as she greeted Rex.

" How is the arrangement for the new secretary, Jessica?" His gloomy expression showed how frustrated he was.

Rex had been in a tight spot at the moment since Jessica told him just yesterday that she would be on leave for two months because of her father's ailment. She needed to go back to the province.

Jessica had been with him for six years since he took over as the president of the company after his engagement to Diane.

" I got a replacement, Sir," she replied, handing out the file.

"Okay then, I hope she's qualified for the job?" Rex asked to be sure but Jessica's silence made him look up.

"Well...Sir, she was the only person who I could get last night. Scheduling an appointment for the job would be about a week or more for a qualified person," She stuttered.

Then she added, scratching her neck," And I'll be travelling tomorrow."

"I guess I will just take anyone for now, and I will replace them once I find someone suitable for the job," Rex sighed, waving her off.

"Okay then, that will do for now," He said, glancing at the file.

"Thank you, sir. She- she is a good friend of mine way back in school," Jessica said, enthusiastically.

Rex squinted, his gaze fully on her.

"You don't have to worry, Sir. We stay together and she kind of knows some things about the job since she's always with me," She quickly explained, even without Rex saying anything.

"Hmm," he hummed.

"Sir, how about you go through the resume?" She asked anxiously.

"You can just keep it, I'll go through it later," Rex responded, waving it off. "When would she start working as my secretary?"

"Luckily she agreed to start working today, if you would accept it. She's outside, she came with me," Jessica said.

Rex stared at the huge pile of files in front of his desk.

"You said she's here already right?" He asked again and she nodded.

"Send her in," he said.

Rex took some files on the table and glanced through it. Today was going to be a hectic day for him. He has about four meetings to attend today and nothing was in place yet.

Rex decided to take a look at the emergency files first. He heard a light knock on the door. It must be the new secretary.

"Come in," he mumbled audibly and the door screech opened.

"Good morning, Sir," a female voice spoke up.

Rex tore his eyes away from the file and the woman before him made his heart skip a bit. She was looking oddly familiar but he just couldn't place her face.

Despite her stunning features, a piercing green eyes, long curly brown hair, and a radiant smile, she was dressed in cheap clothes that seemed to clash with her natural elegance. Her faded blouse and worn-out skirt looked out of place in the sleek, modern conference room.

He couldn't help but wonder what her story was, and how she had ended up here, in his office, dressed in clothes that seemed to belong to someone else.

Then something struck his imagination. It was that same scent, six years ago.

Rex almost fell off his seat, as he stared at the face he would never forget In a hurry. His mind flashed back to six years ago as he remembered the naive and beautiful lady he made love to.

"Sir, Sir, are you okay?" She asked, her voice shaking his entire world.

She was the one.

The lady he met six years ago.
