Chapter 5 5

Seraphina took another step back, the space between them growing. She could feel the weight of Cassian's words settling in the pit of her stomach. It was as though he had cracked open a door inside her that she hadn't even known existed. He was right-she couldn't just walk away. But she didn't know how to stay either.

Her gaze flicked to the ground, trying to steady herself, but when she looked up again, Cassian was closer than before, his presence a constant pull she couldn't seem to escape. His eyes were focused on her, unwavering, as if he could read every hesitation, every fear, as though he understood the war raging inside her.

"Why are you doing this?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, the frustration and confusion swirling in her chest. "Why me?"

Cassian's jaw tightened, his expression darkening for a split second, before he seemed to compose himself. "Because you're not like the others, Seraphina. I can see it in you. You think you can hide behind all the walls you've built, but they don't fool me." His voice softened. "And I'm not letting you walk away from this, not when I know there's something more between us."

She shook her head, her heart racing in her chest. She had always been the one who controlled the narrative-who kept the distance, who played by her own rules. But Cassian was a different kind of force. He wasn't asking for permission. He wasn't pretending he didn't see through her carefully constructed mask.

"I don't need this," she said, though her voice was shaky, unsure of herself. "I'm not some... some conquest for you to win."

Cassian's lips curved into a smile, but it wasn't one of amusement. It was something darker, something that sent a shiver down her spine. "You're not a conquest, Seraphina. But I'll admit, I don't like being told no."

Her breath caught in her throat, her pulse racing. She should walk away. She should turn and walk back into the building and leave this conversation behind, but for some reason, her feet felt glued to the spot.

"You're playing with fire," she said, trying to regain some sense of control, trying to convince herself that she could walk away unscathed.

Cassian stepped closer, his presence swallowing the space between them. His hand brushed lightly against her arm, and she could feel the heat of his touch even through the fabric of her blouse. It was like a spark in the air, a charge that made her heart thud in her chest. Her breath hitched, and for a moment, she was caught in the intensity of the moment, of him.

"You're the one who's playing with fire, Seraphina," he said, his voice hushed, intense. "And you know it. I see the way you look at me. The way you're fighting this."

"I'm not..." she started to protest, but the words caught in her throat as his gaze held hers, locking her in place.

"You are," he murmured, his voice a low rasp that seemed to send vibrations through her body. "And I'm not letting you run away from it."

Her heart pounded in her chest, her thoughts a jumble of confusion and desire, of wanting to step away but not knowing how. She had never felt this out of control, never felt so powerless in the face of someone else's gaze.

Cassian reached out and gently cupped her cheek, his thumb grazing the soft skin of her jawline. The touch was tender, almost as if he was trying to be gentle with her, but there was an underlying force in it that made her breath catch. He was in control, and she hated how much she wanted to surrender to it.

"Stop pretending," he whispered, his face inches from hers. "You can feel it, too."

She opened her mouth to speak, to tell him to stop, but the words were lost as he leaned in just slightly, his breath warm against her skin, the air around them thick with tension.

Seraphina didn't pull away, couldn't pull away. And that terrified her. She was used to being in control, used to pushing people away, keeping them at arm's length. But with Cassian... everything was different.

His lips brushed against hers, a soft, almost tentative touch that sent a jolt of heat through her body. It was a kiss, but not just any kiss. It was a promise, a challenge, a question she wasn't sure how to answer.

Seraphina's mind whirled, but her body responded instinctively. She kissed him back, her lips parting slightly as a wave of desire flooded through her. She didn't want this. She couldn't want this. But there was no denying the pull between them, no denying the way her body ached for him, for the feeling of his touch.

Cassian deepened the kiss, his hand slipping to the back of her neck, pulling her closer. The intensity of it, the heat, was overwhelming. Her heart was racing, her pulse pounding in her ears. She could feel the world narrowing down to just the two of them, the rest of the universe fading away as they stood there, locked in this impossible moment.

But just as quickly as it had started, Cassian pulled away, his forehead resting against hers as he breathed heavily, his chest rising and falling with each breath.

"Don't fight this," he said softly, his voice raw, like the kiss had affected him just as much as it had her. "You can't. Not anymore."

Seraphina was breathless, her mind struggling to catch up with what had just happened. She could feel the heat still radiating from her lips, still tingling in the aftermath of the kiss. But she knew she couldn't let this go any further. She couldn't let him win.

"Why?" she asked, her voice trembling. "Why are you doing this to me?"

Cassian didn't immediately respond. Instead, he just looked at her with that inscrutable gaze, like he was searching for something in her eyes. Finally, he spoke, his voice low and serious.

"Because I can see who you really are, Seraphina," he said, his eyes boring into hers. "And I won't let you hide from it anymore. You're not just your father's daughter. You're not just a businesswoman. You're more than that. And I'm going to make sure you know it."

Seraphina swallowed hard, her chest tightening at the words. She didn't want to admit it, but there was a part of her that felt something stirring deep inside. Something she hadn't allowed herself to feel in a long time. The desire for something more. Something real.

But she couldn't let herself go there. She couldn't.

"I can't do this," she said, her voice shaking but firm. "I won't."

Cassian looked at her for a long moment, his gaze intense, calculating. And then, with a quiet sigh, he stepped back. His expression remained unreadable, but there was a flicker of something-regret? Frustration?-that flashed across his face before he masked it.

"We'll see, Seraphina," he said softly, his voice just above a whisper. "We'll see."

And with that, he turned and walked away, leaving Seraphina standing alone on the cold sidewalk, her heart racing, her thoughts spinning.

She had no idea what would happen next, but one thing was certain-Cassian Ashford wasn't going to let her go so easily. And neither was she.
