Chapter 5 Five

The hours that followed were a blur of customers, baking, and polite small talk. Ava moved mechanically, her hands on autopilot as her mind raced, a storm of emotions crashing against her calm exterior. She couldn't stop thinking about Julian, about his promise to change, about the way he looked at her like she was the one thing he needed. But how could she trust that? How could she just forget everything he had done?

She was still wrestling with her own heart when the evening rush began to slow down, leaving her standing behind the counter, a rag in hand, wiping down the same spot over and over again. Claire had long since gone home, and the silence of the bakery settled around her like a weight.

The sound of footsteps approaching the door caused her to glance up. She froze as Julian stepped through the threshold once more. His presence seemed to fill the room, and Ava's pulse quickened, even though she knew he hadn't come to make a scene. He looked different today-more composed, more determined-and yet, there was an air of vulnerability about him that unsettled her.

"I didn't expect to see you again so soon," she said, her voice barely steady.

"I couldn't stay away." His smile was small but sincere, and for a moment, Ava found herself wondering if he meant it.

He walked toward the counter, stopping just short of it, his gaze fixed on her. "I know you're probably thinking that I'm rushing this, but I don't know how else to do it. I just... I want to be there for you. For both of you. I can't undo the past, but I want to make sure I don't miss out on the future."

Ava's breath caught in her throat. His words were so simple, yet they carried so much weight. Could it really be that easy? Could he really change?

"I'm still not sure about all of this, Julian," she admitted, the vulnerability in her voice stark against her usual resolve. "I've been doing it all on my own for so long, and I don't know if I can just... let you back in."

"I don't expect you to," he said quickly, his hands gripping the counter as if holding himself back. "But I want you to know that I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. And I'll wait for you. I'll wait for as long as it takes for you to decide if you can trust me again."

The sincerity in his voice sent a flutter of emotion through her, something she hadn't felt in years. Hope? Fear? She couldn't tell. What she did know was that the walls she had so carefully built were starting to crumble, piece by piece.

"I don't want to hurt you, Julian," she whispered, the weight of her own words sinking in. "But I can't let myself get hurt again."

He reached out slowly, gently, as if testing her boundaries. His hand came to rest on the edge of the counter, close enough for her to feel the warmth of his touch without making contact. "You won't be hurt by me again. I swear."

Ava swallowed hard. The temptation to reach out, to trust him again, was stronger than she cared to admit. But the fear of being hurt again was overwhelming, and she wasn't sure if she could take the risk.

"I need time," she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "Time to figure this out. Time to think about Ethan. Time to figure out what's best for us."

Julian nodded, his expression both patient and understanding. "I'm not rushing you, Ava. I just need you to know that I'm here. Whenever you're ready."

They stood in silence for a moment, and Ava felt an overwhelming sense of weightlessness. It was as if the entire world had paused, holding its breath, waiting for her to make a decision. And yet, no matter how much she wanted to reach for him, to let him back into her life, she couldn't shake the fear that he would disappear again when it got too difficult.

"I'll think about it," she said again, the words feeling more final this time.

Julian's lips curved upward, just the smallest hint of a smile. "That's all I can ask for."

As he turned to leave, Ava's gaze followed him, a mixture of emotions swirling within her. She wanted to believe him, to believe that he was truly different now, that he wouldn't walk away like before. But trust was fragile, and she wasn't sure if hers could withstand the weight of another disappointment.

As the door closed behind him, Ava felt an emptiness settle into her chest, one that only seemed to grow with each passing minute. She longed for things to be simple again-before the betrayal, before the pain-but she knew that nothing would ever be that easy again.

She was left with nothing but questions. Could she let him back into her life? Could she trust him with her heart-and with Ethan? And more than that, could she allow herself to believe in something as fragile as love when it had been broken so many times before?

The clock ticked on in the quiet bakery, but the answers remained elusive, slipping further and further out of reach with every passing second.
