The tension between Kael and Emma hung heavy as they walked back toward town. The woods seemed darker now, the shadows deeper and the air colder. Every sound made Emma jump, her nerves on edge. She couldn't shake the feeling that someone-or something-was watching them.
"You don't have to do this," she said finally, breaking the silence.
Kael didn't look at her. "Yes, I do."
"But why? Luka is just trying to provoke you. Why not just explain things to the pack?"
Kael stopped abruptly and turned to face her. "Because that's not how it works. Leadership in a pack isn't about words or explanations. It's about strength. If I don't fight Luka, I'll lose the pack-and without an alpha, the pack will fall apart."
Emma frowned. "But you're stronger than him, right?"
Kael hesitated. "It's not just about strength. Luka is smart, and he's been preparing for this. He's already convinced some of the others to side with him. If he wins, he'll lead the pack down a path of violence. And that's something I can't let happen."
Emma swallowed hard, the gravity of the situation sinking in. "What can I do to help?"
"You've done enough," Kael said firmly. "This isn't your fight."
Emma opened her mouth to argue, but the look in his eyes stopped her. There was a hardness there, but also something else-something that looked a lot like fear.
They reached the edge of the forest, where a small stream cut through the trees. Several members of the pack were already gathered, their faces tense as they murmured amongst themselves. Emma recognized the woman and two men from earlier, along with a handful of others she hadn't seen before.
And then there was Luka.
He stood on the far side of the stream, his arms crossed and a smug smile on his face. His golden eyes gleamed in the moonlight, and his wiry frame radiated confidence.
"Kael," Luka said, his voice dripping with mockery. "I was wondering when you'd show up."
Kael stepped forward, his posture rigid. "You want to challenge me, Luka? Fine. Let's get this over with."
Luka chuckled. "So eager to lose. I almost feel bad for you."
Emma bristled at Luka's tone, but Kael remained calm. He turned to one of the older wolves, a grizzled man with a scar running down the side of his face.
"Jacob," Kael said. "You'll officiate."
Jacob nodded solemnly. "The terms?"
"To submission," Kael replied. "No interference from the pack."
Luka smirked. "Agreed."
Jacob raised his hand, signaling for the pack to step back and form a wide circle around the stream. Emma found herself being ushered to the edge of the clearing, her heart pounding as Kael and Luka squared off in the center.
The transformation was almost instantaneous.
Kael's body shifted, his muscles rippling as dark fur sprouted along his arms and legs. His face elongated into a sharp snout, his silver eyes glowing with intensity. Luka followed suit, his golden eyes blazing as his wiry frame became lean and powerful.
The two wolves circled each other, their growls low and menacing. The tension was electric, every movement deliberate and calculated.
Luka struck first, lunging at Kael with surprising speed. Kael dodged, his claws raking across Luka's side as he moved. Luka snarled in pain but recovered quickly, launching himself at Kael again.
The fight was brutal, a blur of teeth and claws that left the air thick with the scent of blood. Kael was stronger, but Luka was fast, darting in and out with precision.
Emma watched in horror, her nails digging into her palms as she fought the urge to intervene. She didn't understand the rules of this world, but one thing was clear-this wasn't just a fight. It was a battle for survival.
"Come on, Kael," she whispered, her voice trembling.
Kael's growl deepened as Luka tried to go for his throat. With a powerful swipe, Kael sent Luka sprawling into the stream, the water splashing around him.
Luka staggered to his feet, his golden eyes burning with rage. "You're getting slow, old man."
Kael didn't respond. Instead, he lunged forward, his movements a blur as he tackled Luka to the ground. The two wolves grappled, their snarls echoing through the clearing.
Finally, Kael managed to pin Luka, his claws pressing against Luka's throat. Luka struggled, his breaths coming in short, ragged gasps, but it was clear he had lost.
"Yield," Kael growled, his voice guttural and commanding.
For a moment, Luka said nothing, his golden eyes glaring up at Kael with defiance. Then, finally, he lowered his head in submission.
The pack erupted into howls, a mix of approval and acknowledgment of Kael's victory.
Kael shifted back into his human form, his chest heaving as he stood over Luka. "You've had your challenge. Now let it go, or I won't be so forgiving next time."
Luka glared at him but said nothing. With a grunt, he shifted back into his human form and stalked off into the woods, a few of his supporters trailing behind him.
Emma rushed to Kael's side, her hands trembling as she reached out to touch his arm. "Are you okay?"
Kael glanced at her, his silver eyes softening. "I'll be fine."
Jacob approached, his expression grim. "You've won for now, but Luka won't stop. He's too ambitious."
"I know," Kael said, his voice tired. "But for tonight, the pack is safe."
Emma looked around at the remaining members of the pack, their faces filled with a mixture of relief and unease. She realized then just how much responsibility Kael carried on his shoulders-and how much danger he was in because of her.
As they made their way back to the edge of the forest, Emma couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning.
"Kael," she said softly, her voice filled with determination. "I'm staying. I don't care how dangerous it is. You're not in this alone."
Kael stopped and turned to face her, his expression unreadable. "You don't know what you're saying, Emma. This life-it'll destroy you."
"Maybe," she said, meeting his gaze. "But I'm willing to take that risk."
For a long moment, Kael said nothing. Then, with a reluctant nod, he said, "Then you'd better be ready for what's coming."
