Accidental Dad Intentional Love

Chapter Five: Boundaries

Lucas's POV

I shouldn't be here.

That thought struck me as I watched her hastily stuff a few clothes into a bag. Her hands shook, her movements frantic, as if the walls were closing in around her. She wasn't crying anymore, but the redness in her eyes lingered like a silent accusation.

I hated that.

"Is this necessary?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She glanced up, her gaze locking with mine, searching for... what? Reassurance?

I cleared my throat, leaning against the doorway with my arms crossed. "Do you want to wait for Damian to come back and try his luck again?"

Her lips pressed into a thin line, and she went back to packing. "You didn't have to come, you know. I could've handled it."

"Sure," I scoffed. "You were handling it so well, texting me and screaming at him through a locked door."

She shot me a glare, but it lacked venom. Instead, her hand drifted to her stomach, rubbing small, circular motions over it.

I shouldn't have noticed. I shouldn't have cared.

But I did. It felt cute to watch

~~~
We didn't talk much as I drove us to one of my properties across town. The silence between us was heavy, punctuated only by the occasional sniffle from her side. I kept my eyes on the road, gripping the wheel tighter than necessary.
"I'll drop you off," I said, breaking the silence. "You'll have everything you need-security, privacy. But let's be clear, Eva. This isn't about you. It's about the baby."
I could feel her staring at me, but I didn't look.
"What's that supposed to mean?" she asked softly.
"It means," I said, keeping my tone even, "that you don't need to expect anything more from me. My responsibility is to my child, not to you. You'll live a modest life, away from any threats. But this arrangement doesn't change anything between us."
Her silence spoke louder than any words could.
I risked a glance at her. She was staring at her belly again, her fingers brushing over it protectively.
Something twisted in my chest.
'Damn it, Lucas. Focus!'. I screamed at myself.
~~~

The place wasn't extravagant, just functional. A safe house I rarely used, but it was better than where she had been staying.

"This is it," I said curtly, opening the door for her. "Make yourself comfortable."

She stepped inside, clutching her bag like a lifeline. Her eyes scanned the room, but she didn't say anything.

"Do you need anything else?" I asked, already half-expecting her to list a million demands.

She shook her head. "No. This is fine. Thank you."

It was the way she said it, soft, hesitant, that made me pause. No sarcasm, no defiance. Just... gratitude.

"I'll have security posted outside," I added, clearing my throat. "If Damian shows up again, they'll handle it."

She nodded, still rubbing her stomach. "I'll keep that in mind."

The air between us felt charged, and I hated it. I wasn't supposed to feel anything for her. She was just a complication, a mess I was forced to clean up because of one night.

But watching her stand there, so small and yet so fiercely protective of the life growing inside her, made it hard to look away.

I turned toward the door, eager to leave before I said or did something stupid.

"Lucas?"

Her voice stopped me in my tracks.

"What?" I asked without turning around.

"Why are you doing this?" she asked, her tone laced with curiosity and... something else I couldn't quite place.

I exhaled slowly, running a hand through my hair. "Because nothing will harm my child," I said firmly. "Not Damian, not anyone."

When I finally looked at her, she was staring at her belly again , but her lips and curved them in the faintest smile.

It wasn't fair.

I left without another word, the door clicking shut behind me. But as I stood in the hallway, staring at the closed door, something gnawed at me.

This wasn't supposed to be complicated. Protect her, protect the baby, keep everything else out of it.

So why couldn't I stop thinking about the way she looked at her stomach? The way she held herself, like she was ready to take on the world for that kid?

It was dangerous to care. I couldn't afford it.

With one last glance at the door, I turned and walked back in telling myself just a few days to keep my baby safe

Even as a small voice in my head whispered that it already did.
