Chapter 2

I quickly tried to end the call. Unexpectedly, my mom said slowly from the other end of the phone, "Ava, bring Kevin home during Christmas so that I can have a good look at him."

My eyelid twitched suddenly, and I gave a wry smile while nodding reluctantly.

After hanging up the phone, Kevin and I looked at each other in bewilderment.

"Hey, buddy, can you help me out again?"

Kevin turned his face away. "No way."

"As the saying goes, if you start doing good deeds, you should see them through to the end. Just accompany me home for Christmas and give me a hand!"

Kevin got up, picked up his coat, and was about to leave. I immediately grabbed him.

"Just think of it as me hiring you. I'll pay you wages. Is that okay? How about three thousand dollars a day? He remained unmoved.

"Then five thousand, five thousand dollars a day, okay?" The guy didn't even bat an eyelid.

I gritted my teeth and said, "Eight thousand dollars a month. From Christmas to the end of the year, that would be fifty-six thousand dollars in total. Where else can you find such easy money?"

"Fifty-six thousand dollars?"

He pointed to his overcoat, on which there still seemed to be traces of my vomiting earlier. "This overcoat alone costs more than fifty-six thousand dollars."

In this way, I kept arguing with Kevin until we reached the hotel lobby.

Just as I was considering whether to kneel and cling to Kevin's thigh, a flamboyantly dressed man walked towards us.

"Wow, Kevin, it's a surprise to see you here." He whistled at us.

"Long time no see. Have you changed your preference, Kevin?" The man leaned forward and frivolously lifted my chin with his finger.

"What's it got to do with you?" Kevin pulled me behind him and stood in front of me protectively.

I could sense the invisible tension between the two of them. Just as I was about to make a quick getaway, the flamboyantly dressed man grabbed me.

"Hey, pretty lady, don't be in such a rush to leave. It's quite rare for Kevin to be so on edge with me. You've caught my attention."

He grasped my wrist and then pulled hard, dragging me to his side. Then his hand rested on my waist and started moving in a rather improper way. "Name your price. I'd like to find out what it's like to be with Kevin's woman."

I pushed him away with a sarcastic smile. "Sorry, I'm not his woman yet."

To my surprise, he laughed even more flamboyantly, and his hand on my waist started moving downward. "That's even better. Why don't you come with me? I'll make sure you live a life of luxury."

"Really?" I laughed heartily, shaking with mock excitement, then took out my pepper spray from my bag and sprayed it right in his face.

"Ah!" The flamboyantly dressed man covered his face, gnashing his teeth as he lunged at me. "You bitch! How dare you mess with me? I'll kill you!"

His fist came at me with great force, and I couldn't dodge it. So I shut my eyes tightly out of fear.

However, the pain I expected didn't come. Kevin had blocked the flamboyantly dressed man's punch.

"What are you standing there for? Get out of here right now!"

Several bodyguards rushed towards me from behind the flamboyantly dressed man. Kevin had to fight back against him while also blocking the bodyguards.

At that moment, I was actually touched by the feeling of being rescued by a hero.

Back home, as the end of the year drew nearer, I began to think about how to handle my dad.

Maybe I could make up a story about being a tragic girl who was brutally abandoned. At worst, I'd just get a scolding for my poor judgment of people.

A week later, I was hesitating about whether to start with my mom so that I could have someone to speak up for me when I went back home and wouldn't end up too badly.

Kevin knocked on my door.

"What's up?" I asked in surprise.

"About going home for Christmas, eight thousand dollars a day. Is that offer still on?"

"Wait, how did you find my home?"

He walked straight into my house, swaggered towards the sofa, then slumped down on it and looked at me. "Is there anything to eat? I'm starving..."

"I'm asking you!" I was puzzled by his sudden appearance.

"It's as simple as that. My assistant found it for me."

I was speechless.

It was fucking great to have money!

"So, is the offer still valid?" He raised an eyebrow and looked at me askance.

"Uh... I guess it probably is."

"Alright, then book the tickets." After saying that, he seemed to recall something. "Oh, by the way, you book the plane tickets. I'm not used to taking the train."

I tilted my head, silently expressing my doubts about his attitude in my mind. Did he really regard himself as a young master?

"Um... could I ask why you suddenly had a change of heart and came to find me?"

Kevin was silent for a moment.

"Hmm?" I pressed again. "Why did you come back to me?"

He suddenly raised his head, looking at me with a hint of resentment in his eyes. "Why else? It's all because of you!" My mother found out about the fight that day. She canceled my credit card, saying that I needed to learn my lesson."

I couldn't help laughing. "You're a grown man, yet you still need your parents to keep you in check, huh? So what are you going to do without your credit card? A coat like that costs sixty to seventy thousand dollars."

He glared at me. "I can make money on my own."
