Chapter 3 A day to remember forever

The school library was quiet that evening, with only a few students scattered across the tables. Layla sat in her usual corner, flipping through her notes, but her focus wavered as her thoughts kept drifting to Naomi. Just then, as if summoned by her thoughts, Naomi appeared in the doorway, carrying a pile of books.

Layla's heart skipped a beat. Naomi had a way of lighting up even the dullest places. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity, and her smile was as warm as the sun.

"Mind if I join you?" Naomi asked softly, gesturing to the chair beside Layla.

Layla nodded, trying to hide her smile. "Of course. Always."

As Naomi settled into the chair, their arms brushed briefly, sending a jolt through Layla's entire being. Naomi opened one of her books, but instead of reading, she glanced at Layla.

"You've been distracted lately," Naomi said, her tone gentle. "Is everything okay?"

Layla hesitated. How could she tell Naomi that her heart raced every time they were together? That her thoughts were consumed by Naomi's laugh, her smile, and the way she tilted her head when she was curious?

"I'm fine," Layla replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

Naomi tilted her head, studying Layla. "Are you sure? You can tell me anything, you know."

The sincerity in Naomi's voice made Layla's chest tighten. She took a deep breath, deciding to take a leap of faith.

"Naomi," Layla began, her voice trembling slightly, "there's something I've been meaning to tell you."

Naomi closed her book, giving Layla her full attention. "I'm listening."

Layla looked down at her hands, gathering her courage. "I... I care about you. More than just as a friend. You mean the world to me."

Naomi's eyes widened, and for a moment, Layla was terrified she had ruined everything. But then, Naomi reached out, placing her hand over Layla's.

"Layla," Naomi said softly, her voice filled with emotion, "I've felt the same way for a long time. I was just scared you didn't feel the same."

Relief and joy flooded through Layla. She looked up, meeting Naomi's gaze. The distance between them disappeared as they leaned closer, their foreheads touching.

"You're my everything, Naomi," Layla whispered.

"And you're mine," Naomi replied.

The library seemed to fade away as their lips met in a gentle kiss, sealing the unspoken words they had both carried for so long.

The morning sunlight spilled through the windows, casting a warm glow on the classroom. Layla was at her desk, doodling absentmindedly in her notebook. The previous night played over and over in her mind-Naomi's confession, her touch, the way their hearts seemed to beat in unison.

"Layla," Naomi's voice cut through her thoughts.

Layla looked up to find Naomi standing beside her desk, her signature smile lighting up her face.

"Good morning," Layla greeted, feeling a familiar flutter in her chest.

"Good morning," Naomi replied, her eyes sparkling. "Are you free after school today?"

Layla blinked, surprised by the question. "I think so. Why?"

Naomi leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "I have something planned. Just for us."

Layla's curiosity was piqued, but she nodded. "Alright. Where should I meet you?"

"By the old oak tree in the park," Naomi said, her smile turning into a playful grin.

After school, Layla made her way to the park. The towering oak tree was hard to miss, its sprawling branches providing shade to the bench beneath. Naomi was already there, holding a picnic basket and waving enthusiastically.

"I hope you're hungry," Naomi said as Layla approached.

Layla laughed, taking a seat beside her. "Always. What's all this?"

Naomi opened the basket, revealing an assortment of sandwiches, fresh fruit, and homemade cookies.

"I thought we could use a little celebration," Naomi said, her cheeks tinged with pink.

Layla smiled, her heart swelling with affection. "Celebrating what?"

Naomi hesitated for a moment before meeting Layla's gaze. "Celebrating us. I've never been this happy before, and it's because of you."

Layla felt her cheeks heat up, but she couldn't stop the grin spreading across her face. "You're incredible, Naomi. You always know how to make me feel special."

They spent the afternoon laughing, sharing stories, and enjoying the peaceful ambiance of the park. As the sun dipped lower in the sky, painting the horizon in hues of orange and pink, Naomi turned to Layla.

"Layla," she began, her voice soft, "I know we've only just started this, but I want you to know... I'll always choose you."

Layla's breath hitched. The sincerity in Naomi's voice was undeniable, and it wrapped around her heart like a warm embrace.

"I'll always choose you too," Layla whispered.

Naomi reached out, intertwining their fingers. They sat in comfortable silence, watching the sun set together, the world fading away as they basked in the certainty of their feelings.
