Chapter 2 Retreat to the Woods

Trista, devastated, seeks solace in the nearby forest. She starts preparing for the arrival of her twins while dealing with feelings of betrayal and loss. A look into her past reveals her feelings for Liam and the strength she once possessed as Luna.

The cool evening air embraced Trista as she crossed the threshold of the Silverfang Pack hall, leaving behind the chaos and heartbreak. The forest loomed ahead, a familiar haven that beckoned like an old friend. Each step felt heavy, carrying the weight of betrayal and loss. She could almost hear the pack's mocking laughter echoing in her ears, as well as the whispers of disbelief that had swirled around her following Liam's shocking announcement.

"Trista!" Trista did not respond to Hazel's call. She needed to get away, to breathe without the oppressive weight of judgment. The trees stood tall and proud, their branches swaying gently in the breeze, bringing her comfort.

As she entered the woods, the sounds of the pack faded away, replaced by rustling leaves and the distant call of a nightingale. Her heart ached not only from the pain of Liam's words, but also from the realization of what she was losing. She had created a life with him, filled with laughter and hopes for a future together. And now it felt as if everything was crumbling into dust.

"Why, Liam?" She whispered to the wind, her voice cracking. "What happened to us?"

She continued on, her feet finding the familiar path that led deeper into the forest. The scents of pine and damp earth enveloped her, temporarily calming her anxiety. She was able to think here. Here, she could plan.

As she walked, memories of joy and love with Liam came flooding back. His eyes sparkled when he laughed, his embrace was warm, and she felt safe as his Luna. But those memories seemed tainted, overshadowed by the crushing reality of his betrayal. The arrival of Lucy, the new Luna, had put an end to her dreams, and the prospect of facing the pack without Liam by her side was nearly unbearable.

"Focus, Trista," she said to herself, shaking her head to clear it. "You have more to think about now."

The realization of her secret-the twin lives growing within her-sent a surge of determination through her. Whatever had happened to Liam, she needed to protect her children. They would not act as pawns in a political or betrayal game.

She arrived at a clearing, a sacred space where sunlight filtered through the treetops, illuminating a patch of wildflowers. This had always been her sanctuary, a place where she could connect with nature and collect her thoughts. Trista knelt down and brushed her fingers against the soft petals to ground herself in the moment.

"If only it could be like this forever," she murmured, closing her eyes and picturing a peaceful future in which she could raise her children away from the turmoil of pack politics.

But reality intervened, and she opened her eyes, her heart heavy from the weight of her decision. Raising her children in the forest would entail living alone, away from the community she had known her entire life. But what choice did she have? The pack had already turned against her, and after Liam's betrayal, she felt completely alone.

"Maybe it's for the best," she said softly to the flowers. "They will be untainted by politics and power struggles. "They will be free."

The forest seemed to echo her thoughts, the gentle rustle of leaves whispering secrets of liberation. She stood up, her resolve strengthened. Trista refused to be weakened by Liam's decisions. She would be strong for her children.

As she turned to leave the clearing, she discovered a small, weathered journal tucked beneath a rock. Curious, she picked it up and brushed off the dirt. It belonged to her grandmother, a woman known for her wisdom and connection to traditional ways. Trista had frequently sought her advice, and having the journal brought her closer to the woman who had faced her own challenges in life.

Trista flipped through the pages, finding notes on herbs, remedies, and forest tales. But one entry piqued her interest: a story about a mother wolf who raised her pups separately from the pack, teaching them the ways of the wild. The mother had faced obstacles and danger, but she did so with fierce love and determination.

"That's it," Trista said quietly, a spark igniting within her. "I'll do the same."

With newfound purpose, she tucked the journal under her arm and continued into the woods, her mind racing with plans. She would gather supplies, build a safe haven for her children, and teach them the value of their heritage. They would learn the ways of the wild and the value of family, even if it was only the three of them.

As Trista moved deeper into the forest, she could feel the weight of the world lift. She refused to let Liam's betrayal define her or her children. Instead, she would forge a new path, full of love and strength.

However, as she rounded a bend, a rustle in the bushes stopped her in her tracks. Her heart raced as she strained to hear, and the forest felt very much alive around her. Shadows danced through the trees, and the sensation of being watched sent shivers down her spine.

"Who's there?" She called, her voice steady despite the growing alarm in her chest.

The rustling came to an end, and the clearing fell silent for a brief moment. Trista's instincts kicked in, and she crouched low, prepared to defend herself if necessary.

Then, from behind a nearby tree, a young boy emerged, his hair tousled and his eyes bright and curious. Aiden. Her son.

"Mama!" he exclaimed, sprinting toward her. "I was looking for you!"

Relief washed over her, and she knelt to hug him tight, feeling his warmth against her. "You terrified me, Aiden. "You shouldn't be wandering off alone."

"I wanted to find you," he explained, drawing back to look at her. "Are you okay?"

Trista brushed a thumb across his cheek, her heart full of love. "I'm fine, sweetheart." But we need to speak. I would like to share something important with you.

Aiden's eyes widened, a mixture of excitement and curiosity washed over his face. "Is it about the forests? "Can we go on an adventure?"

"Yes," she replied, her resolve solidifying. "However, this adventure will be different. We're going to build our own home with just you, me, and your sister."

His expression shifted from excitement to perplexity. "But what about the pack?"

Trista hesitated, the weight of her decision pressing against her heart. "We no longer consider the pack to be our family." "We'll be our own family now."

Aiden's brow furrowed, but he nodded slowly, acknowledging her words. Okay, Mama. "I trust you."

As they stood in the heart of the forest, Trista felt a surge of hope. This was her opportunity to create something new, a life full of love and strength free of the shadows of betrayal.

But as she told Aiden about her vision, she felt a lingering unease in her gut. The world outside the forest was unpredictable, and she had no idea what obstacles lay ahead. However, she knew she would confront them head on for the sake of her children.
