Chapter 7 Finally, Some Guts.

Katy's fists unclenched as her sister's heels echoed in her ears, each click hammering the truth deeper into her chest. Sonia doesn't care about anyone but herself. The realization burned, but Katy wouldn't let it consume her. She took a steadying breath, then marched forward, her footsteps growing faster and heavier as she closed the distance.

"Sonia!"

Sonia turned, a flicker of surprise crossing her face before she smoothed it over with her usual smugness.

"Changed your mind already?"

Katy stopped a few feet away, her heart racing but her voice steady. "No. I just realized I've got more to say."

Sonia tilted her head, amused. "Oh, this should be good."

"It's not a game, Sonia," Katy said, her voice firm but quiet. "This isn't about winning or losing. You think everything is a competition, but all you're doing is tearing people down to make yourself feel bigger. And I'm done letting you do that to me. Or to anyone I care about."

Sonia's smirk faltered for a split second before she crossed her arms. "Oh, please. You're just upset because you're scared Dave might actually like me more than your little friend. Don't pretend this is some noble stand for justice, Katy. This is jealousy, plain and simple."

Katy laughed bitterly. "Jealous of you? You mean the perfect life you've built on lies, manipulation, and self-centeredness? No, Sonia. I feel sorry for you. You're so busy trying to prove you're better than everyone else, you can't even see how empty your life really is."

The words hit their mark, and for a moment, Sonia's mask slipped. But she recovered quickly, her voice sharp. "Spare me the pity speech, Katy. Just because you've settled for mediocrity doesn't mean I have to."

Katy took a step closer, her gaze unwavering. "You call kindness mediocrity? Loyalty? Love? Maybe that's why you'll never have those things, Sonia. And you know what? I pity you even more for that."

Sonia's eyes narrowed. "You've got guts, I'll give you that. But let's see if you can back it up tomorrow when everything falls apart."

"Go ahead and try," Katy said, her voice unwavering. "But you won't win. Not this time. You've hurt me for years, but you're not ruining my wedding, my friendships, or my life. Not anymore."

Sonia's smirk returned, colder than before. "We'll see about that." With a final glance, she turned and strode away, her heels clicking like a countdown to chaos.

But this time, Katy didn't flinch. She stood tall, watching her sister go, a fierce resolve burning in her chest.

~~~
Just by the bar, Dave caught up with Sam, his footsteps quick but unsure.
"Sam, wait!"
She stopped mid-step and turned around. "Dave?"
He hesitated, running a hand through his hair. "I... I need to talk to you."
Her heart thudded as she nodded. "Okay."
Dave took a breath, his words spilling out. "I know what you're thinking. Sonia's been all over me tonight, and I should've handled it better. But you need to know-I'm not interested in her. Not even a little."
Sam blinked. "You're not?"
"No. Katy told me..." He hesitated, searching her eyes. "She told me how you feel. About me."
Her cheeks burned, and she looked down. "Oh."
"And I'm glad she did," he added quickly. "Because I feel the same way."
Her head snapped up, her eyes wide. "You do?"
"I do. I've liked you for a while, Sam. The way you laugh, the way you light up a room without even trying... I've been waiting for the right moment to tell you. Tonight just wasn't what I had in mind." He chuckled nervously.
Sam couldn't help but smile. "It wasn't exactly how I imagined it either."
Dave grinned, relief washing over him. "So, can I make it up to you? Be my date to Tom and Katy's wedding tomorrow?"
Sam's smile widened, her heart soaring. "I'd love to."
For a moment, they simply stood there, grinning at each other, the air around them humming with possibility.
~~~

From a distance, Katy and Tom stood hand in hand, watching the scene unfold.

"They look happy," Katy murmured, leaning into Tom's shoulder.

Tom smiled. "They do. Almost as happy as we'll be tomorrow."

Katy tilted her head up, and Tom kissed her gently. Together, they turned back to watch Sam and Dave, who were now gazing at each other with soft smiles.

"I've wanted to do this all night," Dave said softly, stepping closer.

"Then stop waiting," Sam replied, closing the gap between them.

Their kiss was slow, sweet, and filled with all the words they hadn't yet spoken. As they pulled apart, the world seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them and the promise of what was to come.

Katy smiled, feeling lighter than she had in weeks. Tomorrow might bring its challenges, but for now, there was hope-and for the first time, she felt ready to face whatever came next.
