Chapter 2

"Hello, who is this?" A woman's soft voice answered the phone.

Why was a woman answering? It was his phone, after all. It was after work hours, so why would a woman be answering it? I hung up, crouched down, and buried my face in my hands, sobbing.

The door clicked open. He was back.

During the day, he wore a white coat at work, a green sterile gown for surgeries, and after work, he changed into black sportswear. Those were his colors.

"I'm here to pack my things. You don't need to worry about it," he said coldly, his brow furrowed.

"Is it something I did wrong? Why are you treating me like this? You say we're not compatible, but I don't believe it. Please, give me a reasonable explanation, one that I can accept," I cried out to him.

"We're not right for each other, so we have to break up." He replied, as if nothing had happened.

I broke down, unable to say another word.

"Let's end our marriage amicably. No need for drama." He said, handing me a tissue.

That was just like him, always saying the harshest things but doing the kindest acts.

"Haven't you finished packing yet?" A woman's voice came from outside. I quickly stood up and looked towards the door.

I walked outside and saw a woman with long flowing hair, a graceful figure, and a sweet voice. Wasn't she his assistant, Lisa Thompson?

"Is this why you want a divorce?" I asked.

He said nothing, continuing to pack his things.

"Your mom is waiting for us. Hurry up," Lisa urged.

He glanced at me with deep eyes but still said nothing. The two of them left, hand in hand.

I collapsed onto the sofa, feeling as if something had pierced my heart. In the few months I had left to live, was I going to lose everything? Did that include him?

I didn't sleep a wink that night. When the morning sun streamed into the room, it was blinding. I stretched, trying to muster some energy. After all, I didn't have much time left and didn't want to spend it in a daze.

As I stretched, a sharp pain shot through my armpit. Panicked, I quickly took a few pills. Looking at my pale reflection in the mirror, I realized the illness was taking its toll...

A text message came through.

"Meet me at the café downstairs from the hospital. Don't miss it."

Who could it be? Curiosity piqued, I decided to go.

As I approached the café, I saw her waving at me from a distance. It was her, Lisa Thompson.

Facing this impeccably made-up woman, I couldn't help but feel a bit uneasy.

"This is our wedding invitation card. I hope you can attend our wedding," she said, placing the elegantly embossed wedding invitation card, which was adorned with delicate lace and a classic floral motif, in front of me.

"But we're not divorced yet. Why are you showing me this?" I asked, looking at her firmly.

"Our families have been business partners for a long time. We were engaged ages ago. Thank you for taking care of him these past years," she said with a dismissive look.

"Our marriage and divorce have nothing to do with you. We can handle our own affairs," I replied calmly, without fear.

"Don't make things harder for yourself. Our family is a shareholder in the hospital. I have plenty of ways to make you leave him."

Hearing this, I felt a mix of emotions. It was laughable...

Lisa's light words weighed on my heart like a boulder, almost causing me to lose control of my emotions.

The morning had been sunny, but by evening, the sky was overcast. I wandered aimlessly, surrounded by bustling people and traffic. Raindrops began to fall silently, soaking me without my noticing.

Back home, I changed out of my wet clothes and lay down on the bed. Soon, I felt a chill all over. I must have caught a fever.

I wanted to get up and find some cold medicine, but Josh had said that cancer medication and cold medicine shouldn't be taken together. So, I got up, poured a glass of hot water, and went back to sleep.

In the past, whenever I was sick, Jack was always there to take care of me. He was my rock during difficult times. But now, he was no longer by my side.
