Chapter 4 4

Elara returned home, her thoughts still racing from her confrontation with Lucas. But as she entered her modest apartment, the weight of the day seemed to fall away. The familiar scent of lavender, a candle she'd lit earlier, filled the room, and she was greeted by Amelia's laughter as the little girl toddled over, arms outstretched, her smile wide and innocent.

"Mommy!" Amelia's voice, full of joy, was a balm to Elara's frayed nerves. She scooped her daughter up, spinning her around as they both laughed, and for a moment, the world felt perfectly whole.

"Did you have a good nap, sweetheart?" she asked, brushing a stray curl from Amelia's face.

Amelia nodded, her big brown eyes-so much like her father's-sparkling with mischief. "I dreamed of candy clouds!" she said, giggling.

Elara chuckled, her heart melting. Amelia was her everything, the one beautiful reminder from that night, even if it had turned her life upside down. Her daughter had given her purpose, grounding her and reminding her of what truly mattered. With Amelia by her side, she felt unstoppable.

As she tucked her daughter in bed that night, her mind drifted back to Lucas, and a thought struck her: How long could she keep the secret of Amelia's paternity? It was a thought she'd wrestled with before, but today, after seeing him, the weight of it felt heavier.

In the days that followed, Elara threw herself into her work, focusing on the acquisition and her goal of destabilizing Thorne Enterprises. She knew it wouldn't be simple; Lucas was as ruthless as he was intelligent. But she had time and patience on her side, and a quiet determination that fueled her every move.

One morning, she arrived at Synergy Group early, ready to dive into her latest analysis when her assistant, Maya, knocked on her office door.

"Elara, there's someone here to see you. He... he didn't make an appointment, but he's very insistent." Maya's usually cheerful expression was tinged with nervousness, and that set off a warning in Elara's mind.

"Who is it?" Elara asked, her brows knitting together.

"It's... Lucas Thorne."

Elara's heart skipped a beat. She took a deep breath, steadying herself, and nodded. "Send him in."

The last thing she'd expected was for Lucas to come to her office, but she wouldn't let him see the unease his presence stirred. She was prepared, guarded, every wall in place as he entered, looking every bit the powerful CEO he was known to be. Yet there was something different in his expression today, a trace of vulnerability or uncertainty that unsettled her.

"Elara," he began, closing the door behind him. His tone was unusually soft, even as his gaze sharpened, assessing her in a way that felt too personal.

"Lucas, to what do I owe the surprise?" She kept her voice measured, controlled.

He hesitated, his jaw tightening. "I wanted to... apologize," he said, his tone rough. "For how I handled things back then."

The words took her by surprise, and she couldn't stop the incredulous laugh that slipped out. "You think you can just show up here, years later, and apologize? As if that undoes everything?"

Lucas's expression darkened, but he didn't back down. "I know it doesn't undo it, Elara. I'm not here to make excuses. I'm here because-" He paused, running a hand through his hair, looking almost... uncertain. "Because I think there's more here than just business."

She felt the impact of his words, the implications, and her pulse quickened. But she maintained her composure. "Business is all there is between us now, Lucas. If you can't accept that, this acquisition won't work."

Lucas's gaze dropped for a fraction of a second, a flicker of something she couldn't read crossing his face. "I don't believe that's true, and I don't think you do either."

Elara clenched her jaw, forcing herself to keep her emotions buried. She wouldn't let him get under her skin, wouldn't let him break through the barriers she had built so carefully. But just as she was about to reply, Lucas's gaze softened, and he spoke in a low, almost vulnerable voice.

"Elara... tell me one thing," he asked, his eyes searching hers. "Why did you leave without saying anything that night? After the... after everything."

The question hit her like a punch. Her mind raced, recalling the morning after their night together, when her life had fallen apart. She had left because of the shame, the betrayal, and the pain, but she wasn't about to reveal that to him.

"You're the one who didn't deserve an explanation, Lucas," she replied icily, meeting his gaze without flinching. "And if you think I owe you anything now, you're sorely mistaken."

For a moment, a flicker of something like regret crossed his face, and he nodded, his shoulders sagging slightly. "Then I guess... I've made my answer clear. But I'm not giving up on this-on us, whatever that means."

Before she could respond, he turned and left, leaving her standing in her office, a storm of emotions churning inside her.

The encounter with Lucas lingered in her mind, making her restless. She was a woman on a mission, her purpose clear and unshakable, yet he had the uncanny ability to make her question everything. She tried to push the conversation to the back of her mind, but a single thought kept rising to the surface: Should Amelia know her father?

The question plagued her, her heart torn between her need for control and her love for her daughter. But one thing was certain-Lucas wouldn't stop until he uncovered the truth. And as much as she hated it, a part of her was terrified of what he might do when he found out about Amelia.

Elara's focus on her goals intensified in the days that followed, driven not only by the desire for revenge but by a growing need to protect Amelia. The stakes had shifted. What had begun as a plan to take down Lucas's empire had become a fight for her family, her future, and the one secret that could unravel everything.

And she wasn't about to lose. Not to Lucas. Not to anyone.
