Chapter 4 4

Luna Reyes sprinted through the dense forest, her heart pounding in her chest. The moon cast eerie shadows on the trees, making her feel like she was being watched. She had always loved the night, but tonight it felt oppressive, the darkness closing in around her.

The rustling of leaves behind her signaled the hunters' proximity. Luna's senses heightened, her hearing acute. She could distinguish each footstep, each labored breath. The hunters were gaining on her, their heavy boots crashing through the underbrush.

Her legs ached, but she pushed on, fueled by adrenaline and desperation. The memory of her parents' deaths drove her forward, a constant reminder of the danger that lurked in every shadow. She wouldn't become another victim, not without a fight. Luna's thoughts flashed back to that fateful night, the sound of gunfire echoing through her mind.

The forest seemed to blur around her, trees becoming indistinguishable from one another. Luna's focus narrowed to the path ahead, her feet pounding out a rhythmic beat on the earth. She had run for what felt like hours, but the hunters remained relentless.

A figure emerged from the darkness, grabbing Luna's arm and yanking her into a nearby thicket. She struggled, but the grip was like a vice. The stranger's hand covered her mouth, silencing her.

"Quiet," a low voice whispered, warm breath tickling her ear. "They're close."

Luna's instincts screamed warning, but the stranger's hold was unyielding. She struggled, trying to break free, but he held firm. His eyes locked onto hers, piercing blue in the darkness.

The hunters stormed past, their flashlights casting fleeting glances over the thicket. Luna's heart skipped a beat. She had narrowly escaped detection.

The stranger released her, his eyes never leaving hers. "You're coming with me," he said, his voice firm but gentle.

Luna hesitated, unsure if she should trust this stranger. But something in his eyes stayed her doubts, a flicker of kindness amidst the darkness. His features were chiseled, strong jawline and sharp cheekbones.

"Who are you?" Luna asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

The stranger's expression turned guarded, his eyes clouding over. "Someone who can keep you alive," he said.

Luna's skepticism lingered, but she followed him through the forest. The silence between them was tense, heavy with unspoken questions. They walked for what felt like an eternity, the only sound their footsteps and the distant howling of wolves.

"What do you want from me?" Luna asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

The stranger's pace quickened, his long strides forcing Luna to hurry. "You're in danger," he said. "The hunters won't stop until they find you."

Luna's thoughts reeled. Why was she being hunted? What had she done to warrant such relentless pursuit? She had always felt like an outsider, someone who didn't quite fit.

The trees thinned, revealing a dilapidated cabin. The stranger pushed open the creaky door.

"Inside," he said.

Luna hesitated, but the stranger's urgency convinced her. She stepped into the cabin, her eyes adjusting slowly to the dim light.

The cabin's interior was sparse, lit by a single lantern. A small fire crackled in the hearth, casting flickering shadows on the walls. The air was thick with the scent of smoke and pine.

"Who are these people?" Luna asked.

The stranger's expression turned grim. "The Order of the Red Hand," he said. "They've been hunting werewolves for centuries."

Luna's mind reeled. Werewolves? She had always suspected she was different, but this...

The stranger's eyes locked onto hers. "You're one of them," he said.

Luna's heart pounded. She had always felt like an outsider, someone who didn't quite fit.

"What am I?" Luna asked.

The stranger's expression softened. "You're the last living heir of the Lunar bloodline," he said.

Luna's world tilted. She was a werewolf? The implications swirled in her mind.

The cabin's door creaked, a warning. The stranger's head snapped toward the sound.

"We have company," he said.

Luna's heart sank. The hunters had found her.

Luna Reyes sprinted through the dense forest, her heart pounding in her chest. The moon cast eerie shadows on the trees, making her feel like she was being watched. Every snap of a twig or rustle of leaves made her jump.

The memory of her parents' deaths drove her forward, fueling her determination to survive. Her legs ached, but she pushed on, adrenaline and desperation propelling her through the darkness.

Rustling leaves signaled the hunters' proximity. Luna's senses heightened, her hearing acute. She distinguished each footstep, each labored breath. They were closing in.

Kael emerged from the darkness, grabbing Luna's arm and yanking her into a nearby thicket. His piercing eyes locked onto hers.

"Quiet," he whispered, his breath warm against her ear. "They're almost here."

Luna's instincts screamed warning, but Kael's grip was like a vice. She struggled, but he held firm.

The hunters stormed past, their flashlights casting fleeting glances over the thicket. Luna's heart skipped a beat. She felt their excitement, their eagerness to claim their prize.

Kael released her, his eyes never leaving hers. "You're coming with me," he said.

Luna hesitated, unsure if she should trust this stranger. Something in his eyes stayed her doubts – kindness, perhaps, or understanding.

"Who are you?" Luna asked.

Kael's expression turned guarded. "Someone who can keep you alive," he said.

Luna followed Kael through the forest, silence between them tense with unspoken questions.

"What do you want from me?" Luna asked.

Kael's pace quickened. "You're in danger," he said. "The hunters won't stop until they find you."

Luna's thoughts reeled. Why was she being hunted? What had she done?

The trees thinned, revealing a dilapidated cabin. Kael pushed open the creaky door.

"Inside," he said.

Luna hesitated, then stepped into the cabin. Her eyes adjusted slowly to the dim light.

Luna's mind reeled. Werewolves? She suspected she was different.

"You're one of them, aren't you?" Luna accused.

Kael's eyes locked onto hers. "Yes," he said.

Luna's heart pounded. She felt like an outsider.

"What am I?" Luna asked.

Kael's expression softened. "You're the last living heir of the Lunar bloodline," he said.

Luna's world tilted. She was a werewolf? Implications swirled.

The cabin's door creaked. Kael's head snapped toward the sound.

"We have company," he said.

Luna's heart sank. The hunters had found her.

Kael grasped Luna's hand, pulling her toward the back door.

"Run," he whispered.

Luna sprinted into the darkness, Kael by her side. The hunters' shouts echoed through the forest.
