Chapter 4 The Gala

She sat that gala morning in an expensive salon and watched her reflection from a mirror. Stylists fluttered around her; to her, this was a glimpse of glamour yet so utterly alien. They oiled her with makeup and hair, including soft waves framing the face. When they were done, she hardly knew the polished, elegant woman staring back.

She showed up at the hotel where the gala was to take place and found Ben awaiting her. "You look perfect," he nodded in approval. "Alexander's already inside. Ready?"

She filled her lungs with deep breaths and nodded. Finally, the full weight of it all had fallen around her like an iron cloak. With a squared shoulder and ready stance, she prepared herself.

Inside, the grand ballroom glittered with chandeliers and opulent déco; elegant gowns mingled with fitted suits in the sea of people. Laughter mixed with conversations as soft strains of live music played. As she entered on Ben's arm, Alexander was waiting near the door. His eyes found hers, a flicker of approval crossing his face.

"Maya," he said, reaching for her hand with practiced ease. "You look wonderful."

But her heart almost leaped out of her chest, since his gaze had been so intense; reminding herself it was all an act, Maya was able to force a smile onto her lips. "Thank you," she lied.

Moving through the sea of faces with her, Maya did the best she could to keep her head held high as they greeted guests and fielded questions. She was all too aware of curious glances from strangers, the murmur of conversation as they passed. Alexander, however, was a natural, charming effortlessly in his introduction of her to influential figures.

"Either of you attend one of these?" he asked them, stopping beside a glittering chandelier.

"No, it's my first," she returned, eyes wide as she gazed upon the decadence surrounding them. "It's just so overwhelming."

He chuckled low. "You'll get used to it. Just remember to smile and have fun.

They paused once in the middle of the room, Alexander's hand to the hollow of her back. He leaned down, his voice low, his words whispering gruffly into her ear, "You're doing fine. Just a little bit longer and we can leave."

She nodded, her eyes lighting up with the reassurance of his words. For all this being utterly insane, Alexander's company was curiously comfortable to her. The calm, softly guiding manner of his had relaxed the situation from being daunting, and for the first time, she did take the edge off.

As the night went on, Maya was surprised by just how enchanted she was by Alexander's world of beauty, refinement, and influence. No longer was she just a starving artist; she belonged to something big, even if it had its base rooted in fraud.

"Do you like these sorts of affairs?" she asked, being bluntly curious.

He fell silent, thinking on her question. "No, not really. They can be shallow. But they exist for a reason." His face changed then, a flicker of vulnerability crossing his face from under the confident veneer. "It's all about perception."

And as they left the ballroom together, she couldn't rid herself of the feeling that only a portion of her façade was crumbling, that perhaps she was beginning to see beyond the mask he wore. But this was just a game, she reminded herself-a temporary arrangement with clearly defined boundaries. Much as she might want to, she really couldn't afford to forget why she was doing this-to find her sister and take her home.

The drive to her apartment was comfortable and quiet, the city lights twinkling out to horizon and each one a reminder of how urgent her quest was. The search would continue tomorrow. And this little arrangement with Alexander? It was only a means to an end-or so she kept telling herself as they walked into night.

It was now that reality weighed in upon her decision. The more time she spends around Alexander, the more her heartbeat is uncontrollable. His magnetism was but intoxicating. Yet, it's a mission that has just gotten bigger. Will she be able to keep her emotions in check, or will the lines begin to blur between their fake relationship and reality in ways unexpected? Only time would tell, but she knew she needed to keep straight priorities about her mission. She was needed by Isabella, and nothing would come between her and finding her sister.
