Chapter 18 The Moment Of Truth

Chapter 19 Strings Attached

/ 1

"Eva..."
The soft, fragile voice shatters the heavy silence around me. I suddenly awaken with a pounding heart, my eyes wide open. I had dozed off with my head on the side of Lila's hospital bed, and briefly, I was uncertain if it had been a dream. However, I hear it once more, a faint murmur, hardly noticeable.
"Eva..."
I jerk upright, my pulse quickening as I look up. Lila's eyes, groggy and half-lidded, are open. She's awake.
"Lila," I gasp, my voice thick with disbelief. "Lila, oh my goodness!"
Crying, I grasp her hand tightly, my vision blurred, struggling to believe what is happening. Despite being frail, her fingers still return the pressure of my hand. The wave of relief hits me like a tidal wave, almost taking my breath away.
"You're awake," I murmur softly, my voice cracking, while leaning my forehead against her hand. "You are finally awake."
Seeing her lips form a slight smile makes me feel as though the burden of the world is momentarily lifted from my shoulders. She has arrived. She's with me.
I stand abruptly, unable to stay still. I need help. "I'm going to get Dr. Carter. Don't move."
I practically stumble to the door, flinging it open and calling out, "Nurse! Get Dr. Emily, please! She's awake!" My voice is trembling, filled with desperation, hope, and the fear that this moment is too good to be true.
The nurse on duty rushes in, her eyes wide with surprise before hurrying off to find Dr. Emily.
As I rush back to Lila's bedside, I grab my phone with shaking hands and dial Lucas first. It rings twice before he picks up, his voice groggy.
"Eva? What's wrong?"
""Lucas, she's awake," I blurted out quickly. "Lila's awake!"
A moment of silence follows as I feel him taking in what I've just said over the phone. "She's... awake?"
"Yes!" I can't stop the tears from falling now, my voice shaky but full of joy. "She just woke up!"
"I'm coming," Lucas declares, his voice resolute with the sounds of him preparing in the background. "I will be there soon."
I hang up, quickly dialing Clara next. I don't give her a chance to speak before quickly saying, "Lila is awake!"
I hear her trying to stifle a sob as she takes a sharp breath and it echoes through the phone. "She's awake?"
"Yes, Clara. She's awake. Dr. Carter is coming to check on her now, but... she's really awake."
I will arrive as quickly as possible," Clara said with her voice filled with emotion. "I can't wrap my head around it... I just can't."
Once the call ends, I turn my gaze back to Lila, my heart racing in my chest. She's looking at me, her expression soft but weak. I pull a chair closer and sit down, never letting go of her hand.
"Dr. Carter will be here soon," I say, my voice gentler now while smoothing the hair from her forehead. ""How are you doing?" I ask quietly, gently running my thumb over her hand.
"Drained," she murmurs, her eyes fluttering lethargically as if battling to remain conscious.
"You've been through a lot ," I softly murmur. "But you're here, Lila. You're still here."
Dr. Emily enters as the door swings open, her white coat flowing gently behind her. She's immediately by Lila's side, checking her vitals, her movements swift but thorough. I sit there, biting my lip, watching her every move like my entire world depends on her next words.
"How is she?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
Dr. Emily glances at me, her expression calm and professional, but with a hint of relief in her eyes. "She's stable, Eva. This is a good sign."
I feel a surge of hope, but it is soon dampened by the unspoken truth lingering in the atmosphere. "But... is she okay? Is she going to be okay?"
Dr. Emily finishes her examination and stands, giving me a reassuring smile. "Lila's body is responding well. She'll need lots of rest, and we'll closely monitor her progress, but for now, this is a positive step forward. Her condition is still critical, but this gives us time."
I breathe out, feeling a strong wave of relief that almost makes my knees give out. "She's really okay?"
For now," Dr. Emily replies, her expression softening. "The therapies are effective, but we must closely monitor her condition. I hope we can delay the illness from advancing further too. But right now, you should focus on her rest-and raising those funds."
I nod, my throat too tight to speak. It's not over, I know that. But for now, she's here. And that's enough.
"Just as Dr. Emily finishes speaking, the door bursts open, and Lucas rushes in, breathless. "Eva?" He looks from me to Lila, his eyes wide with disbelief. "She's awake?"
I nod, unable to stop the tears that well up in my eyes. "She's awake, Lucas."
He strides across the room, pulling me into a tight hug, sharing my relief. "I just knew she will get through this," he murmurs into my hair, his voice filled with emotion.
I give a slight nod, struggling to find my words as I come to terms with the reality of the situation.
Clara arrives moments later, her eyes red but shining with hope. She goes directly to Lila's bedside and softly runs her hand along Lila's arm. Clara whispers gently, her voice shaking, "She will be fine. Thank God."
With tears streaming down her face she embraces me. "I'm so happy, Eva. I'm so, so happy."
I cling to her, my emotions swirling between joy and fear. Lila's awake, but the fight isn't over. Not by a long shot.
Dr. Emily's words echo in my mind: *"We're only managing her symptoms."*
I take a deep breath, brush away my tears, and try to stay optimistic. "I will solve this," I whispered, directing my words mainly at myself. "We'll raise the funds." I don't care how long it takes."
Lucas steps beside me, his hand on my shoulder. "We'll do it together."
Clara wipes her eyes, nodding. "One step at a time, Eva."
I meet their gaze, nodding. But I know time is running out. I take a deep breath, feeling the weight on my shoulders, but this time, it doesn't feel as heavy. **Because she's awake.**
It's a small victory that gives me renewed determination.
Now, I finally have a reason to keep pushing forward.
