Chapter 4 Morning after

Alex awoke with a pounding headache, his temples throbbing in sync with the relentless drumbeat of the previous night's music still echoing in his mind. His eyes fluttered open, and he groaned, the effects of the alcohol hitting him all at once. But as his vision cleared, confusion settled in, followed by a creeping sense of panic.

This wasn't his bedroom. The sheets were unfamiliar, the smell strange. The room was shrouded in a dim, eerie light, like the aftermath of a storm. Alex's gaze darted around, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings. Where was he?

Panic rose in his chest as he slowly turned his head-and froze. Beside him, lying under the sheets, was a woman. Unclothed. Unfamiliar. A stranger.

His heart raced, threatening to burst free from his chest. Who was she? How had he ended up here? What had he done?

Suddenly, fragments of the night before rushed back. The club. The drinks. The laughter. The slow blurring of reality as the alcohol took over. Ryan's celebration, the loud music, and the endless stream of drinks.

Alex bolted upright, scrambling to gather his clothes, scattered across the floor. His mind was spinning. How had he allowed himself to lose control like this? And worse, how was he going to explain this to Barbara? To Caroline?

Guilt and shame washed over him like a tidal wave. He had promised Caroline he would only be out for a little while, and now...now he had no idea what he had done or with whom.

Just as Alex prepared to flee the room, the woman beside him stirred, her eyes fluttering open. Recognition flashed across her face as she looked at him, and she sat up, the sheets slipping down, revealing her bare shoulders.

"Wait," she murmured, her voice still groggy with sleep.

Alex froze, his pulse quickening. What had he done? What secrets had he revealed in his intoxicated state?

The woman's gaze locked onto his, and for a moment, they just stared at each other, the tension between them palpable.

"Who...who are you?" Alex stammered, his voice barely above a whisper.

The woman's expression shifted, a mix of confusion and wariness. "You don't remember?" she asked, her voice laced with skepticism.

Alex shook his head, feeling a wave of nausea wash over him.

The woman sighed, rubbing her temples. "My name is Hannah. We met at the club last night."

Hannah. The name echoed in Alex's mind, but he couldn't place her.

"What happened?" Alex asked, his voice laced with trepidation.

Hannah's eyes dropped, and she pulled the sheets up to her chest. "You don't remember anything?" she repeated.

Alex shook his head again, feeling a cold sweat break out on his forehead.

Hannah's expression softened slightly. "Maybe it's better that way," she whispered.

Alex's mind reeled with questions, but before he could ask any, Hannah's phone buzzed on the nightstand. She reached for it, her eyes scanning the screen.

"I have to go," she said abruptly, tossing off the covers and getting out of bed.

Alex watched, still in shock, as Hannah quickly gathered her clothes and rushed out of the room, leaving him with more questions than answers.

Alex strode through his office with a sense of purpose, his polished suit and confident demeanor exuding sophistication. As he adjusted his cufflinks, the events of the day weighed heavily on his mind. The constant stream of phone calls, meetings, and paperwork had made the day drag on longer than expected. But one thing remained clear in his thoughts-a dinner date with Caroline that had been planned for weeks.

Rushing out of the office, he pulled out his phone and dialed Caroline's number.

"Where are you?" Alex asked, trying to sound more relaxed than he felt.

"I'm already at the restaurant," she replied, her voice warm with anticipation.

Navigating the traffic, Alex arrived at the restaurant to find Caroline already seated, her calm presence a contrast to his hurried arrival. She looked up with a smile as he slid into the seat beside her.

"I apologize for being late," he offered, slightly breathless from rushing.Caroline waved her hand dismissively.

"It's fine. I knew work would keep you. How's your day been?"

They dined in a comfortable rhythm, exchanging small talk and enjoying the ambiance of the restaurant. Despite the pleasantries, Alex couldn't shake the nagging feeling in the back of his mind-he had left Barbara alone at home. Guilt gnawed at him as he glanced at his watch, realizing he had stayed longer than intended.

"I really should get back home," Alex said, standing up after paying the bill. "Barbara's waiting for me."

Caroline smiled, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Of course, family comes first. I'll see you soon."

Alex gave her a quick hug before rushing to his car, the responsibility of fatherhood weighing on his conscience. By the time he walked through the door, it was late. Barbara was still awake, curled up on the couch with a movie playing in the background.

"Dad, you're late!" she exclaimed as she ran toward him, a mixture of excitement and reproach in her eyes.

"Work ran long, sweetie. I'm sorry," Alex said, ruffling her hair affectionately. "Have you eaten?"

Barbara shook her head, a slight pout forming. "I just had some fruit."

Alex sighed softly and headed to the kitchen. In no time, he whipped up a quick meal for both of them. They sat together at the table, the silence between them comfortable.

"Dad, why don't you hire a maid?" Barbara asked suddenly, breaking the silence. Her eyes were wide with curiosity. "So she can stay with me when you're not around."

The question took Alex by surprise. He paused, considering her suggestion. "What about Caroline?" he asked, testing the waters. "What if she started staying with us? She could take care of you.

"Barbara's reaction was immediate. "No!" she said, shaking her head with certainty.

Alex raised his eyebrows, not expecting such a firm response. "Okay, if you find someone you like, let me know," he said with a chuckle, trying to lighten the mood.

Barbara gave him a small smile. "Thanks, Dad."

After dinner, Alex retreated to his room. He pulled out his phone and called Caroline, feeling the need to apologize for his abrupt departure from the restaurant. As the call connected, he heard the tiredness in her voice.

"I'm sorry I had to leave so suddenly,"

Alex began.Caroline was quiet for a moment before responding. "I understand, Alex. You have responsibilities, but..." Her voice trailed off.

"But what?" Alex asked, sensing the tension.

"Sometimes it feels like there's no room for me," Caroline admitted quietly. "It's always about Barbara, and I get that she's your daughter, but it makes things... difficult.

"Alex sighed. "I know it's hard. She's still adjusting to everything. Just give it time."

Caroline didn't respond immediately. When she finally spoke, her voice was softer. "I will. I just hope there's a place for me too.

"As the call ended, Alex couldn't shake the feeling that things were more complicated than he had thought. Barbara's reluctance toward Caroline was starting to create a rift, and he wasn't sure how to bridge it.

Meanwhile, in another part of town, Caroline sat in her apartment, staring at her phone after the call ended. Frustration and uncertainty swirled inside her. She had grown tired of the constant interruptions in her life with Alex, all stemming from Barbara.

No matter how hard she tried, Barbara always seemed to stand in the way of her relationship with Alex. But Caroline wasn't about to give up. She was determined to stay by Alex's side, even if it meant waiting for Barbara to warm up to her.

Her phone buzzed again, this time a call from her parents, urging her to visit. She sighed, promising she would come by soon. The stress of the evening was taking its toll, and she decided to forgo cooking, the drinks from the restaurant leaving her drowsy. Exhausted, she headed to bed, allowing sleep to claim her.
