Chapter 4 Connection

Caden looked at her with a mix of regret and longing. "You don't. Not really. But I wish you did. Ever since I moved here, something's been pulling me toward you, something stronger than just attraction. I've tried to keep my distance, to protect you from this world... but I'm not strong enough to stay away."

Elara felt her heart skip a beat. She wanted to deny the pull between them, to keep him at arm's length, but every part of her was drawn to him. His arrogance had irritated her, but beneath it, she saw the real Caden-the one who was scared, lonely, and perhaps even broken by the weight of his own responsibilities.

"You don't have to protect me," Elara said, her voice firm despite the whirlwind of emotions inside her. "I'm not afraid."

Caden's eyes darkened with intensity. "You should be. The magic in this world isn't like the fairy tales you've read. It's dangerous, and those who seek it will stop at nothing to control it. If you get too close, you'll be caught in the crossfire."

"Then why tell me?" Elara asked, taking a step forward. "Why let me in at all?"

Caden's jaw tightened, and for a moment, he seemed to wrestle with his answer. "Because I can't lose you," he said softly, his voice raw with emotion. "Not now. Not when I'm already falling for you."

The confession hit Elara like a tidal wave, her breath catching in her throat. She had never expected to hear those words from him-the playboy, the arrogant neighbor who had infuriated and intrigued her in equal measure. But now, standing before her, Caden wasn't just the cocky charmer she thought he was. He was vulnerable, exposed, and laying his heart bare.

And that terrified her.

"I don't know what to say," she whispered, her pulse racing. "I don't know if I'm ready for this."

Caden reached out, gently taking her hand in his. His touch was warm, and the connection between them felt like a spark of energy that only grew stronger. "You don't have to decide now," he said softly. "But whatever you choose, just know that I'll protect you. Even if it means walking away."
