The week that passed after visiting Elder Magnus was an empty swirl of uneasiness and preoccupation. I tried to return to my normal routine, but it was as though the axis of my world had tipped, and everyone in it was aware that it had.
The kitchen was illuminated by the morning sun coming through the window as I sat there for breakfast, trying to distract myself from the rising sense of apprehension that was starting to dig a pit in my stomach. Danny had gone to see a bunch of his friends, so I was left all alone with whatever it was Roman had said to me the other day and the cryptic warning from Elder Magnus.
The doorbell rang, breaking through the stillness of the house as I sat down at the table. I got up and answered it to find Liam, one of the pack warriors, standing on the porch. He looked uncomfortable, his weight shifting from foot to foot as he seemed to fumble on, not knowing what to say.
"Hi, Kayla," he forced a smile. "Can we talk for a minute?"
I nodded and moved to the side, letting him in. We both took a seat in the living room, the armchair that I was used to, now feeling strangely different.
He cleared his throat. "I heard what happened with Roman. Just wanted you to know that if you need anything, I am here for you. You don't have to go through this alone."
His message was sweet, but something told me that it had more to do with just being supportive. "Thanks, Liam. I'm appreciative."
He hesitated, then added, "I know this might not be the right time to say this, but I've always wanted us to be more than just friends. I truly care about you Kayla."
I managed a weak smile, grateful for his kindness. "I do appreciate that, truly. It's just that I hope things will change with Roman. Perhaps he will come back to me asking for a second chance."
Liam's face fell slightly, "I get it. But if you change your mind, you know where to find me."
After Liam was gone, I tried to be busy with the house chores but my mind kept going back to Elder Magnus' words. What did he mean by the encroaching darkness? And how do I prepare for something I can't comprehend?
Later that day, walking through the village, I bumped into Rachel, another pack member. She has always been a very buoyant, high-energy individual, but today her usual brightness seemed dimmed.
"Hey, Kayla," she said, catching up with me. "I heard about the ceremony. Are you doing okay?"
I nodded, doing my best to keep my voice even. "It's been a rough couple of days."
Rachel looked sympathetically into my eyes. "Just know if you ever need a place to stay or someone to talk to, my door's always open. We're a pack, and we should look out for each other."
I thanked her, though a pang of sadness went through me. It was touching; others had noticed and cared-no more did I feel that much of an outsider in my pack. I could only hope that maybe if I could hold on just a little bit longer, things might turn around with Roman.
As I kept on walking, a few other members of the pack approached, some offering their support, and others bolder in their intentions and making advances to me. Sam, quiet and thoughtful, went as far as to suggest we spend some time together, almost as if to insinuate a potential relationship.
"Kayla, I know you're going through a lot right now," Sam said in a very soft voice, "but I care about you, and if you want, we could-"
I interrupted, "Thank you, Sam, but I'm not ready for anything like that. I'm still hoping things will work out with Roman."
He nodded, though his disappointment was visible all over his face. "I understand. In case you change your mind, I will be here."
Each interaction was a reminder of how lonely I felt despite the offers of help and companionship. I was grateful for the support, but I couldn't shake the feeling that none of it would be enough if Roman didn't come around.
It was darkening; one could notice the lengthening of shadows in the village where I ended up wandering through the woods. Trying to collect my thoughts, the cool breeze gently brushed my face as I tried to pass through the woods.
I was already on my way back to the house when I heard some footsteps behind me. As I turned, my heart stopped as I saw Roman emerging. His look was unreadable-a mix of frustration with something I couldn't put my finger on.
"Kayla," he spoke in a cold tone.
Then I stopped dead in my tracks, my breath catching in my throat. "Roman. What are you doing here?"
He walked closer, his gaze unwavering. "I wanted to talk to you. I've been hearing about all the attention you're getting from other pack members."
I scowled, feeling a sting of hurt. "Is that why you're here? Are you jealous?"
Roman shook his head, firming his expression. "No. You can be with whoever you want, I don't really care. I'm just here to clarify things. I've made my decision, and I don't want any further complications."
My heart sank. "That's it? That's all you have to say?" I asked in disbelief.
He glanced back at me with the most desolate expression. "Yes, It's best we keep some distance."
I could feel the wave of despair running over me.
Roman's face softened for a moment, but he quickly masked it with his usual coldness. "It is better this way. I don't want to be a distraction to you and cause you more harm in your healing process."
He turned and started walking away, leaving me standing there, feeling more alone than ever. I wanted to call after him, to beg him to rethink his decision, but the words were caught in my throat.
