Chapter 4 Four

CLARE's POV

Sterling Residence

"What was Grandpa up to again?" I thought to myself

"Ah, you do remember him - my good friend's son Stephen Ralph? He was to be engaged to you before his accident and your marriage to Mark" Grandfather said

My heart skipped a beat. "Yes, Stephen Ralph? But Grandpa, I just got divorced..." I trailed off, feeling a mix of emotions.

Grandfather's eyes twinkled with amusement. "Ah, but Stephen seems to be good husband material, Clare plus he's still single. The offer of marriage is still on the table if you are willing to take it."

Clare's eyes widened in surprise. "The fact that he is still single should be a red flag but okay, Grandpa, I see. Ralph Tech is one of the biggest companies in the Technology Industry, and marrying his son would certainly...expand our interests," she said, choosing her words carefully.

But Grandfather's expression turned gentle, his eyes shining with a warmth that belied his business acumen. "No, darling, that's not it.

We already have everything we need. Our company is vast and runs in different industries. I don't want you to marry for business or status. I want you to marry for love, for happiness."

My eyes grew wide as I felt a flutter in my chest not knowing what to say or do "Grandpa.." and the rest remained unsaid from my mouth which couldn't make any sound after this statement made by the old man.

I had never met Stephen before, despite our grandfathers' close friendship. I didn't know what to make of this sudden proposal, or why my grandfather was so approved of me marrying someone I did not know.

"But Grandpa, I haven't met him," I said trying to convince him.

"Then meet him. Go on a date and if he is not your spec, I'll not set you up with another person" my Grandfather said, grinning.

"I'll think about it, Grandpa," I said finally trying to sound diplomatic. "Besides I just got divorced, I need a little time before I jump into another marriage or relationship". But my mind was already racing with doubts and questions.

"That's my girl. Now get some rest, Clare" my Grandfather said, his eyes shining with pride. "You've got a big day ahead of you tomorrow.

You'll be starting your training at the company, and I have no doubt you'll excel."

I nodded, excited but anxious at the same time. Heading upstairs to my room, I couldn't help but wonder about Stephen Ralph - Is he the right man for me, or was Grandfather just trying to secure a powerful family alliance to protect our interests and his friendship?

I pushed the thoughts aside and focused on getting some rest. Tomorrow was going to be a big day.

STEPHEN

Ralp's Estate

Stephen Ralph sat in his home office, surrounded by the office documents, when his phone rang. He answered, expecting a business call, but instead heard his grandfather's warm voice on the other end.

"Hey, Grandpa. How's it going?" I asked, settling back in his chair.

But his grandfather's next words left him stunned. "Stephen, I have some surprising news. Clare Sterling is divorced, and her grandfather is still willing to move forward with the marriage arrangement." he said, his voice enthusiastic.

"All we need is for her to say yes"

Stephen's mind raced as he processed this information. I have only met Henry Sterling who is my grandfathers closest friend but this seemed archaic, because his family's company was one of the biggest in the Tech Industry and they don't need a marriage alliance.

"What about my yes, Grandpa?" he said still talking on the phone

"Oh, she's a great young lady. I'm sure you'll like her," he said, dismissing my concerns.

But my thoughts were interrupted by my own doubts. Could I really marry a stranger? Someone I didn't know, didn't love? I needed to know more about her, about her past, her present. I needed to know if this was a mistake or a opportunity.

I picked up the phone and dialed a trusted contact. "I need you to look into someone for me. Clarissa Sterling. Yes, that's right. Thank you."

As I waited for the information to come through, my mind wandered back to the conversation with my grandfather. Why was he so keen on this marriage?

Just then, my phone rang. "Stephen, I found something interesting about Clare Sterling."

The Next Day

CLARE

Sterling Industries

It was my first day back at Sterling Industries, and I was determined to make a positive impression. I stood in front of the mirror, smoothing out my outfit.

I chose to wear a custom-fitted dark pantsuit, a white blouse, and a pair of low heels to match. It gave of a confident m, professional, and prepared aura. My hair was pulled back into a smooth bun, and I had applied a subtle touch of makeup.

Josh whistled as I walked down the stairs. "Wow, sis, you look like a total boss!"

Grandfather grinned, "You look stunning, Clare. Are you ready to make a positive impression?"

I blushed, feeling a surge of appreciation towards them. "Thanks, guys. I'm anxious but excited."

I stood outside the sleek glass building, my heart racing with a mix of feelings. Sterling Industries, the company that had been in my family for generations, was finally within my grasp again. I took a profound breath, feeling a sense of assurance wash over me.

"Ready, sis?" Josh asked, pushing me playfully.

I nodded, and together we strolled into the building. Our grandfather was waiting for us in the elevator, a warm smile on his face.

"Clare, it's so good to have you back," he said, embracing me tightly.

I smiled as I embraced him back. "It's great to be back, Grandfather."

We made our way to the top floor, where the executive offices were located. Josh went to his assigned office while Grandfather led me to a spacious corner office, with a stunning view of the city.

"This will be your office, Clare," he said. "You'll be working closely with our team to learn the ropes and in the long run take over as CEO.

I felt a surge of excitement in my nerves. "Okay, this is a very nice office Grandpa. Thank you". I said, taking in the beauty of the office.

"Only the best for my Clare" he responded.

"But grandfather, let's start slow,"

"What do you mean Clare?"

"I want to work my way to the top lets say for a few weeks. Let me get to know those working down, below the executive office, lets say like an intern."

"An intern?"

"Yes grandfather. I can get reinstated to a higher position after a few weeks or months."

"Hmm, that's very good Clare. Thinking like a business guru already. Come on now, let me show you where you'd work pending your rise to the top" my grandfather said winking at me.

I chuckled at him, straightened my shoulders, and followed him to the elevator as he proceeded to show me around.

We exited the elevator once we reached the employee's corner, I scanned the room with confidence. But I suddenly froze when I saw a familiar face. What was he doing here?
