Chapter 4

[1]

Since the engagement party, Kristina had changed.

She no longer treated me with hostility but instead tried to please me in every possible way.

"Luna, this is the new Chanel bag. It's for you."

"These are some high-end skincare products I bought for you. Give them a try."

"And these lipsticks and perfumes, take whatever you like."

Something was off.

Way off.

I swiftly approached her.

"Be honest, did you do something to wrong me?"

Before I could finish, she interrupted, but then choked on her own saliva.

"Cough, cough, cough. What are you talking about? You, from the countryside, what could I possibly do to wrong you? If you don't like it, then I won't give it to you. I was just being kind, and now I'm not even getting any gratitude."

As she spoke, her eyes darted around, avoiding my gaze entirely.

I understood immediately and grabbed the things she had given me.

"If you don't want it, I'll take it. Once it's given to me, it's mine."

Our parents watched us getting along and looked pleased.

"I heard your school is organizing a school trip. Have you decided on the location?"

"It's set for Iproclas," Kristina replied, but her eyes kept glancing at me.

Definitely suspicious.

I munched on my French fries, observing her closely.

Perhaps feeling my gaze for too long, she awkwardly made an excuse to leave.

Mom took the opportunity to pull me to sit beside her.

"Luna, it's your first time going on a school trip. Take good care of yourself. Here's a premium credit card. Use it to buy whatever you need. Don't worry about saving money for us. When you're out, listen to your sister. Kristina may have a sharp tongue, but she has a kind heart."

Of course, I knew that. My intuition had reminded me more than once.

As for that cat, it would just have to be sidelined. It's either me or the cat.

In the school library, I was engrossed in a steamy romance novel about a powerful CEO.

The guy with blue hair sat down in front of me again.

"I saw something crazy," he said, his expression a mix of amusement and sympathy.

He then pulled me behind a bookshelf.

Through the gaps, I saw my fiancé, Christopher, standing face to face with Kristina.

Kristina's face was flushed, a stark contrast to her usual bossy attitude.

There was a strange atmosphere between them.

Their faces were getting closer and closer.

I clutched my novel tightly, silently chanting, "Kiss, kiss."

There's nothing more entertaining than watching a romance unfold.

But Declan, ever the straightforward one, seemed determined to stand up for me.

Just as their lips were about to touch, he pulled me to stand between them.

I looked up at Christopher.

"Christopher, I swear it wasn't intentional. It's just that your brother..."

He seemed a bit out of it.

Christopher's face darkened.

"Bro, what do you mean? You just got engaged to Luna, and now you're kissing someone else behind her back? Are you trying to play the field?"

For some reason, he emphasized the word "kissing" loudly.

Kristina's face turned ugly, as if she was about to cry.

More and more classmates gathered around to watch.

Out of loyalty to Christopher, I stood on tiptoe and covered Declan's mouth.

His ears turned bright red instantly.

I could almost see pink hearts floating around, and just as they were about to burst, I grabbed Declan and fled.

"What's your problem? Why do you keep showing up everywhere?" I demanded, standing on the empty playground.

Of course, I knew about Christopher and Kristina. It was all an act from the start.

The faster their relationship developed, the more money I got.

Isn't that what people call the power of money?

As a mouse, of course, I wanted as much money as I could get.

"Hey, what do you mean? I'm just looking out for you. My brother is a jerk, having his cake and eating it too. Is this how you repay your savior?"

Declan's words gave me an unrealistic idea.

"Are you... a mouse...?"

Before I could finish, he hurriedly covered his head.

"You figured it out already?"

I...

We flying mice have always been rare creatures, but we are quick learners and love reading.

Declan's chaotic way of speaking was just like my fellow mice.

And the pink hearts in my mind only appeared when I was around Declan.

I was just testing the waters, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
