Chapter 4
When I got home that night, it was already eleven o'clock.
Darin sat in the living room, his face dark with displeasure. "Jillian, do you have any idea how to behave? It's just an exhibition. If you miss it, you miss it. Why are you acting out and coming back so late?"
"Do you realize we're getting married in two days?"
My good mood from the evening was completely ruined by him. I responded coldly, "Why don't you just cancel the wedding, too? After all, you're used to it."
His eyebrows twitched, and his voice took on a hint of anger. "Are you threatening me with our wedding? Jillian, you know I hate being threatened the most!"
I walked into the study without any expression. "That's your problem, not mine."
He smashed a cup outside, while I turned on the computer and started writing my resume.
Even though Brodie had personally invited me, I still needed to go through the proper procedures.
I thought Darin had left in a fit of anger, but he unexpectedly came into the study, looking impatient.
"It was wrong of me to stand you up, but Melany is sick tonight, and I had to take care of her. Can you stop being unreasonable?"
"If you're not satisfied with the work arrangements, we can discuss it further. But Jillian, you need to be sensible. Melany is a business partner. Letting her take over the design department is a decision based on business interests. Don't bring your petty complaints into work."
I continued typing on the keyboard. "It doesn't matter. It's no longer my concern."
He probably thought he had already shown me enough respect, and I was still being ungrateful. He immediately came over and grabbed my hand.
"What do you want... What is this? Are you writing a resume?"
He was stunned when he saw the screen, then his face turned completely cold. "Are you really leaving the company?"
I shook off his hand. "I told you, I don't have to be your employee."
His face twisted slightly with anger. "Do you think anyone other than Jenkins Jewelry Company can offer you such favorable conditions? Your father went bankrupt after a bust in jade stone, and you owe everything you have today to Jenkins Jewelry Company! Jillian, do you even have a heart?"
I closed my eyes in embarrassment.
When my family went bankrupt, I had just graduated. It was Darin who gave me a job and helped my family through the difficult times. It was then that I fell deeply in love with him.
After my parents passed away one after another, I saw him as my only family and became increasingly dependent on him.
I thought these were our cherished memories of overcoming hardships together.
I never expected them to become ways for him to hurt me.
I looked at him steadily. "I don't care anymore."
"Darin, you crushed my heart for five years, and now you come asking for it back. Isn't that ridiculous?"
His face turned pale, and his jaw tightened.
"Jillian, I..."
I didn't listen to the rest of his words and walked out the door.
In the past, it was always me crying and pleading while he slammed the door and left.
I had long grown tired of his hurtful words.
It was my turn to leave first.
The day before the wedding, I sent in my resignation and then took my resume and portfolio to further discuss with Brodie.
We went to a café, and to my surprise, Darin and Melany were there too.
The moment Darin saw us, his face turned dark and terrifying. He asked me, "Who is he?"
I answered calmly, "My new boss."
He grabbed my wrist and gritted his teeth. "You're still mine! Who allowed you to look for another job?"
Brodie took hold of his hand and forced him to let go, bit by bit.
"Mr. Jenkins, don't lose your cool."
Darin glared at him coldly. "You have some nerve stealing my employees."
I sneered. "If you spent less time messing around, you would have seen my resignation letter long ago."
He quickly glanced at Melany. "We were discussing business."
Ignoring the company, two executives were discussing business alone in a café. I really didn't know where he got the idea that I was so easy to fool.
I had no intention of arguing with him and turned to leave.
Darin grabbed me. "The design department is yours again! Melany won't be taking over. You'll still be in charge."
Melany slowly stood up, briefly looked unhappy before resuming her gentle smile.
"Yes, after discussing it, we realized the arrangement was inappropriate. It's better for you to continue managing it."
