Chapter 4 4

The days following Rowan's public rejection passed in a blur of silent suffering for Ava. She threw herself into her duties with single-minded determination, using the physical labor as a way to drown out the memories that haunted her. But no matter how hard she worked, no matter how many tasks she completed, the pain lingered, an ever-present weight on her chest that made it hard to breathe.

The pack, for the most part, continued to treat her with the same mix of indifference and scorn that they always had. The few who had whispered words of pity in the immediate aftermath of Rowan's announcement had quickly moved on, content to let Ava fade back into the background where she belonged. She was an Omega, after all-insignificant and unworthy of their attention.

But there was no escaping the whispers, the sidelong glances, the knowing smirks. Every time Ava entered the common areas of the pack's settlement, she could feel the eyes of her packmates on her, could hear the barely concealed snickers that followed her wherever she went. It was as though the entire pack had come together to remind her of her place, to ensure that she never forgot just how far beneath them she truly was.

Yet amidst the familiar cruelty, something unexpected began to happen. Ava had always been invisible, or worse, openly disregarded. But now, there were two pairs of eyes watching her with something other than disdain. Two pairs of eyes that seemed to see past the Omega label, past the humiliation, and into the depths of her heartache.

Caden and Ryder Blackwood were well-known within the pack. The twin sons of Rowan's late father, they were considered by many to be the most promising young wolves of their generation. They were tall, strong, and undeniably handsome, with the same jet-black hair and piercing blue eyes that marked them as true Blackwoods. But where Rowan was known for his stoic demeanor and unyielding sense of duty, Caden and Ryder were known for their easygoing charm and mischievous natures. They were beloved by the pack, admired for their strength and skill in battle, and adored for their charisma.

Ava had always been aware of the twins, of course-who wasn't? But they had never paid her any attention, never so much as glanced in her direction. They moved in different circles, occupied different worlds within the same pack. She was an Omega, and they were the future leaders, destined for greatness. The gulf between them was too wide to bridge.

So when they began to notice her, to really notice her, Ava was more than a little surprised.

It started one afternoon, several days after Rowan's rejection, when Ava was out gathering herbs in the forest. It was a task she had taken on willingly, eager for any excuse to escape the confines of the settlement. The forest was her sanctuary, a place where she could lose herself in the rhythm of her work and forget, if only for a little while, the pain that gnawed at her soul.

She was kneeling by a patch of wild sage, carefully cutting the fragrant leaves with a small knife, when she heard the unmistakable sound of footsteps approaching. They were light, almost silent, but Ava's senses were sharp, honed by years of living on the edges of the pack. She stiffened, her heart skipping a beat as she quickly scanned the surrounding trees.

A moment later, Caden and Ryder emerged from the underbrush, their movements fluid and graceful. They were dressed in simple black clothing, their usual attire when out in the forest, and their expressions were uncharacteristically serious as they approached her.

Ava immediately lowered her gaze, her heart racing. She didn't know why they were here, but she couldn't imagine it was for anything good. The twins had never paid her any attention before, and she had no reason to believe that had changed.

"Ava," Ryder said, his voice surprisingly gentle as he came to a stop a few feet away from her.

Ava looked up, startled by the sound of her name on his lips. She met his gaze for a brief moment before quickly looking away, unsure of what to say. She wasn't used to being addressed by anyone of higher rank, let alone one of the Blackwood twins.

Caden, who had been watching her closely, stepped forward and crouched down so that he was at eye level with her. His blue eyes were intense, but there was no malice in them, only concern. "You've been avoiding the pack," he said softly. "Are you all right?"

Ava blinked in surprise, her mind struggling to process his words. She had expected mockery, or perhaps a reprimand for shirking her duties, but not...this. Not kindness.

"I..." Ava hesitated, her voice barely above a whisper. "I've been busy with my work."

Ryder, who had been standing beside his brother, frowned slightly. "We've noticed. But you've also been keeping to yourself more than usual. We just wanted to make sure you were okay."

Ava stared at them, her heart pounding in her chest. She didn't know what to make of this sudden attention, this unexpected concern. It was completely out of character for them, and she couldn't help but wonder if it was some kind of trick, some new way to humiliate her.

But there was no mockery in their expressions, no hint of cruelty in their voices. They were looking at her as though they genuinely cared about her well-being, as though they were worried about her.

The realization was almost too much to bear. Ava had spent so long being ignored, being dismissed as unworthy, that the idea of anyone-let alone the Blackwood twins-caring about her seemed impossible.

"I'm fine," she said finally, her voice trembling slightly. "Thank you for asking."

Caden's gaze softened, and he reached out to gently tilt her chin up, forcing her to meet his eyes. "You don't have to pretend with us, Ava. We know what happened."

Ava's breath caught in her throat, and she felt a fresh wave of shame wash over her. Of course they knew. Everyone in the pack knew. Rowan's rejection had been public, and the gossip had spread like wildfire.

She wanted to look away, to hide her face from their pitying gazes, but Caden's hand kept her from doing so. His touch was warm and surprisingly gentle, and for a moment, Ava allowed herself to take comfort in it.

Ryder knelt beside his brother, his expression more serious than Ava had ever seen it. "You don't deserve what's been happening to you," he said quietly. "Rowan was wrong to humiliate you like that."

Ava's eyes widened in shock. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. No one had ever spoken out against Rowan before, not like this. He was the Alpha, the leader of their pack, and his word was law. For Caden and Ryder to even suggest that he had made a mistake was unthinkable.

"I..." Ava stammered, unsure of how to respond. She wanted to tell them that they were wrong, that Rowan had only been doing what was best for the pack, but the words wouldn't come. Instead, she felt a lump forming in her throat, and she had to blink rapidly to keep the tears at bay.

Ryder reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder, his touch just as warm and reassuring as his brother's. "You don't have to be strong all the time, Ava. It's okay to be upset."

Ava felt something inside her begin to crack, a small fissure in the wall she had built around her heart. She had spent so long trying to be strong, trying to carry on despite the pain, that she had forgotten what it felt like to have someone else share that burden, even for a moment.

But here they were, the Blackwood twins, offering her exactly that. They were offering her kindness, understanding, and comfort-things she had never expected to find in them.

Before she could stop herself, a single tear slipped down her cheek. It was followed by another, and then another, until she was crying silently, her shoulders shaking with the force of her suppressed sobs.

Caden pulled her into a gentle embrace, his arms wrapping around her slender frame as though he could shield her from the pain. "It's okay," he murmured, his voice low and soothing. "We're here for you."

Ryder moved closer, his hand resting on Ava's back as he rubbed small, comforting circles. "You don't have to go through this alone, Ava. We're your friends, whether you believe it or not."

Ava's breath hitched at the word "friends." It was a concept that felt foreign to her, something she had never really had in her life. She had always been alone, always on the outside looking in. The idea that Caden and Ryder could see her as a friend, as someone worth caring about, was almost too much to comprehend.

But as she cried in Caden's arms, feeling the warmth of Ryder's touch on her back, Ava realized that maybe-just maybe-she wasn't as alone as she had always believed. Maybe there were people in the pack who saw her for who she truly was, who valued her despite her status as an Omega.

She clung to Caden, her sobs finally breaking free as she let go of the pain she had been holding inside for so long. And the twins, for their part, held her close, offering her the comfort she so desperately needed.

When Ava's tears finally subsided, she felt an overwhelming sense of exhaustion wash over her. She hadn't realized just how much she had been carrying until now, and the release had left her feeling both drained and oddly lighter..
