Chapter 5 Sophia's POV

My forehead broke out in a large cold sweat. Even words failed me. "I can explain this, Vincent, I've been there, but-"

"Your vileness knows no bounds!" Vincent interrupted my explanation, his words piercing my heart like glass shards, and the invisible pain spread instantly.

I stared blankly at the man walking toward me. If his eyes were usually cold, they were doubly so at this moment.

"Did you really tell Marianne to just drop dead already, that her existence made you feel sick? Did you?"

My heart was racing; I had never said that.

I tried to explain, but Vincent grabbed me by the neck in anger and threw me hard on the sofa.

"No, don't..." I pleaded. At the sight of his ferocity, my hands and feet turned numb, my scalp tingling with fear.

He looked like he could really kill me.

Until now, I had never seen this cold and violent side of him, and I was suddenly drowned with a fear that I might lose the child in my belly because of this. But Vincent didn't give me any chance to escape.

He whispered in my ear like a real devil, "She is the most important person to me. If I ever hear another insult coming out of your lips, I swear I will not hesitate killing you!"

I felt my strength being sapped out of me, like a river had overturned in my heart.

I gazed at the ceiling and thought, was I going to die here? Was I going to die in the hands of Vincent, the man who had clearly pledged to protect me for as long as I lived?

At this point, I awoke with a start from my dream. I sat up, covered my neck in fear, and gasped for breath. Fortunately, Vincent hadn't killed me.

A few years had passed since the pit incident. We met again when his father had retired and he was promoted to the new Alpha. And this new Alpha had a beloved woman. That woman's name is Marianne.

While I could only hide in the shadows, with my crippled ring finger, hoping to catch a glimpse of him. My inferior love was never going to be rewarded, and my feelings were doomed to be unreciprocated. There was no light at the end of the tunnel for one-sided love.

I didn't know how long had passed when the pain in my heart finally eased. It was only then that I noticed the unfamiliar surroundings. Why was I in the hospital?

I touched my neck, and the feeling of asphyxiation was still throbbing in my mind. Despite that, I couldn't stop the seed of hope from sprouting. Had Vincent sent me here? Perhaps, just perhaps, he didn't hate me as much as I thought.

At this moment, I heard someone at the door of the ward. Biting my lower lip, I looked over with anticipation.

"Sophia, you've finally come round!"

The door finally opened, and in came a pretty figure. Catherine closed the door and ran to my bed, grabbing my hand with concern.

"Thank goodness, you had no idea how panicked I was when I saw you lying on the sofa like a dead person. I was really afraid that something bad had happened to you!"

I could hear the voices of my insignificant expectations shattering, wailing.

One second was all it took for the seed of hope to shrivel up and turn into dust. I mustered every last trace of my strength: "Was it you who sent me here?"
