Chapter 4 Four

In a simple yet luxurious room, a big bed was placed in the middle. In the mattress, a woman was sleeping soundly, covered with a red velvet blanket.

A man sat beside her, staring at her clean and sleeping face.

The man couldn't help but raise his hand and caressed her smooth cheeks. But when he realized what he did, he froze and dropped his hand. His face became taut and he pursed his lips.

Then he saw the girl's eyes move. Later, clear and round eyes opened, and her gaze dropped on his face.

Selene saw the eyes that once hooked her. Memories flooded once again. Back in the days when she thought it did not exist.

Because he suddenly disappeared.

But now, he was standing right before her.

"Lucas?" She sounded with a soft voice.

Lucas Eadwulf saw that she woke up but just stared at her.

"Is that really you?" Selene asked once again when she saw he did not speak.

But the young man only stood up and placed his hands on his pocket.

"Get some rest." His cold voice sounded. He turned around and made his way out of the room.

Selene watched blankly as he left the room step by step.

Then, she robotically laid down straight and closed her eyes.

........

The sun spilled on the windowsill. Selene squinted her eyes and turned over. Slowly she sat up.

Her eyes roamed around the room.

Once again, she was in an unfamiliar room.

Maybe she was already numb, but she only stared blankly at everything. She can't feel anything anymore.

But her heart thumped when she remembered what she saw last night.

Was it really Lucas? Was it real or was it just a dream?

She was rubbing her forehead when a knock was heard on the door.

She looked warily at the direction, and slowly she stood up. But she stayed in her place.

When the door opened, three women in maid uniforms came in.

And a man followed wearing a suit in tie. He stood with a noble air and aloof expression on his face.

He seemed the same as her memories but at the same time not.

It was Lucas. And last night was not a dream.

Lucas looked at Selene's empty eyes and pursed his lips. He went straight to one of the seats in the room and sat on it. He crossed his legs and rested his arms on the armrest.

"If you still don't know, I bought you." His deep voice sounded.

Selene's heart thump.

"I own you."

She clenched her trembling hands.

"And you will attend to my every need. You will do what I say."

Selene raised her eyes and looked once again at the man's eyes. It was filled with coldness and authority.

Memories from the past can't help coming back. His harsh but gentle voice. The same cold eyes but looked at her warmly. At that time, when everyone turned their backs on her, he was there to defend her.

..................................................................

Four years ago

Selene hurried down the crowded hallway, her arms hugging her books. As a new transfer student, she was eager to make a good impression on her first day. Suddenly, she felt an inexplicable chill run down her spine. Glancing up, she locked eyes with a striking young man standing motionless amidst the sea of students.

Time seemed to slow as their gazes met. There was something hauntingly familiar about him, though Selene couldn't place why. Before she could ponder it further, the shrill ring of the bell snapped her back to reality. Cursing under her breath, she dashed to her classroom.

To her surprise, the mysterious stranger was already there when she arrived, his face partially obscured by a dark hood. Throughout the lesson, Selene could feel the weight of his stare, along with the curious glances of her other classmates. She did her best to focus on the teacher's words, acutely aware of how far behind she was in the curriculum.

As soon as class ended, a trio of girls cornered Selene. Their leader, a brunette named Megan, eyed her with thinly veiled hostility.

"So, you're the new girl who caught Lucas's eye," Megan sneered, her friends giggling in agreement.

Selene blinked in confusion. "Lucas?"

"Don't play dumb," Megan snapped. "We all saw how he looked at you. Just remember your place, newbie."

Selene stumbled backward as Megan's push sent her off-balance. Her books clattered to the floor, scattering around her feet. Pain shot through her palms as they scraped against the cold tile.

"Hey! That hur-" Selene's protest died in her throat as a shadow fell over her.

The hallway, moments ago filled with chatter and laughter, fell eerily silent. Selene looked up to see the young man standing between her and the bullies, his tall frame radiating an aura of quiet menace.

He didn't say a word. He didn't need to. His piercing gaze swept over Megan and her cronies, his eyes cold and unforgiving. Selene watched in amazement as the color drained from Megan's face, her earlier arrogance swept from her face.

"L-Lucas," Megan stammered, taking an involuntary step back. "We were just... we didn't mean..."

Lucas remained motionless, his silence more terrifying than any threat could have been. The other two girls exchanged nervous glances, their earlier giggles replaced by looks of panic.

Without breaking his stare, Lucas reached down and grasped Selene's arm, pulling her effortlessly to her feet. His touch was firm but not rough.

"Let's go," he murmured, his voice low enough that only Selene could hear.

As Lucas led her away, Selene glanced back over her shoulder. Megan and her friends remained rooted to the spot, their expressions a mix of shock and relief at the leaving teenager.

Both of them moved swiftly through the corridors, Lucas's longer strides forcing Selene to nearly jog to keep up. Students parted before them, whispers and curious stares following in their way.

It wasn't until they reached a quieter part of the school that Lucas finally slowed his pace. He came to a stop in front of an unmarked door, releasing Selene's arm as abruptly as he had grasped it.

"What... what are you doing?" Selene asked, still breathless from their hasty retreat.

Lucas's eyes, so fierce moments ago, now looked at her with cool detachment. "Saving you from your own naivety," he replied, his voice devoid of warmth. "This isn't some after-school special. You can't let yourself be pushed around like that."

He pushed open the door, it was a storage room. Oddly, it was utilized as a sleeping space as there was a sofa with a pillow and a quilt. Without waiting for her response, Lucas entered and sank to the sofa, closing his eyes as if the entire incident had been nothing more than a minor inconvenience.

Selene hesitated before following him inside. "Thank you," she said softly, still in awe of how quickly he had defused the situation.

Lucas didn't open his eyes. "Don't thank me. I simply did what was necessary." His tone softened almost imperceptibly as he continued, "Stay here for now. Those girls won't bother you again."

As Selene settled onto a chair, she couldn't help but study Lucas more closely. Despite his cold demeanor, there was an undeniable strength about him-a quiet power that seemed to radiate from his very being. She had never met anyone quite like him before.
