Chapter 5 A Glimpse of the Past

The next day, Emily decided to explore the town while Jack worked on a new painting. She wandered through the quaint streets, admiring the charming shops and galleries. As she turned a corner, she stumbled upon a small antique store, its windows filled with vintage treasures.

Inside, Emily found a trove of coastal artifacts, each one telling a story of the town's rich history. As she delved deeper into the store, she noticed an old photograph on the wall. It depicted a young couple, smiling and happy, standing in front of a familiar-looking cottage.

Emily's heart skipped a beat as she realized it was her cottage, the one she had inherited from her aunt. She felt a sudden connection to the couple, wondering who they were and what their story was.

The store owner, an elderly woman named Mrs. Jenkins, noticed Emily's fascination with the photograph. "Ah, you've found the old lovebirds," she said, a knowing glint in her eye.

"Who are they?" Emily asked, her curiosity piqued.

"That's Jack's parents," Mrs. Jenkins replied, her voice low. "They were deeply in love, but their story was marked by tragedy."

Emily's eyes widened as she listened to Mrs. Jenkins' tale. Jack's parents had been high school sweethearts, but their happiness was short-lived. A devastating loss had torn them apart, leaving Jack's father heartbroken and his mother gone.

As Emily left the store, her mind reeled with questions. Why had Jack never mentioned his parents? What had happened to them? And how did their story connect to hers?

She couldn't wait to ask Jack, but as she approached his cottage, she saw him standing outside, his eyes fixed on the ocean. His expression was haunted, his gaze lost in the distance.

"Jack?" Emily said softly, not wanting to startle him.

He turned, his eyes focusing on her. "Hey," he said, his voice rough.

"Mrs. Jenkins told me about your parents," Emily said gently. "I'm so sorry, Jack."

Jack's expression closed off, his eyes clouding over. "It's a long story," he said, his voice tight.

Emily nodded, sensing that he wasn't ready to share more. But she knew that she had to be patient, that Jack's secrets were slowly unraveling.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, Emily realized that she was falling for Jack, hard. But she also knew that their love story was intertwined with the past, and that uncovering the truth would be the key to their happiness.
