CHAPTER 8
Zane's POV
"Alpha." One of the warriors greeted me as I entered the incubation room.
It's where the captured Lunas were imprisoned before they were thrown to where they should belong – as slaves.
I was scanning the room, when something glinting caught my eyes.
The moonlight reflected on the tip of the iron tightly being held by a petite woman from the corner of the room.
"How reckless!" I thought.
Standing before her, I observed her appearance and narrowed my eyes with interest.
Looking at her useless bravery, only one thing went to my mind. "She'll be a whole lot of fun as a toy."
And before I knew it, one second I was teasing her, the next, she was screaming in pain while curled up on the ground.
I wouldn't lie, I panicked when she passed out in my arms. The moment her eyes shut right, I felt my heart stop.
Swearing profusely, I called her name and shook her shoulders several times but she didn't respond.
Laying her back gently on the floor, I fished my phone out of my pocket and called Fred, my very good friend of mine who's also a werewolf doctor.
He was only a half-breed himself and couldn't actually possess a wolf form like the rest of us did, but I considered him as part of the pack as any other wolf under my care was.
Thankfully, he picked up onn the first ring.
"Hey!" he greeted with his usual cheer the moment he answered the call.
"Fred. I need you here in my room. Now." The urgency in my voice snapped him into attention.
"On my way," he replied before hanging up.
I lifted her into my arms, carrying her to the bed in hopes that would help.
Now, I haven't played much with her yet. She couldn't die just yet.
She looked pale and almost lifeless while lying on top of the black silk bedsheet of mine. If it weren't for her chest moving on her slow shallow breaths, I would have thought she was already dead..
"Where the hell is that prick?" I voiced out, annoyingly waiting for Fred's arrival as I sat on the single sofa, staring at the exhausted woman on my bed with furrowed eyebrows.
Fred took several minutes to come down and I waited impatiently, fighting the urge to go meet him halfway so I could drag him over here faster.
He's probably been working in his lab on the top floor again about who knew what.
Movement dragged my eyes to the door, and I looked up in time to see him enter the room. He held a first aid kit in one hand and moved it under his arm while heappearanceanitizer I kept on a pillar next to the door.
"How nice of you. You sure have a great sense of urgency for a doctor." Sarcasm was overflowing in my voice.
He stopped walking and looked at me with a raised eyebrow. "You're OCD, remember? I can't forget how many times you scolded me for–"
"Get here!" I growled, and he hurried faster, approaching me with a sheepish grin. I turned around, leading him to my bed.
He paused by the foot of it, brows raised.
"Don't!" I warned, but of course, if one person on this planet didn't fear me – the dark lord- it would be Fred.
He ignored my warning expertly and grinned.
"What's this? You chose a woman?" He looked at her, scrutinizing her entirely. "A pretty one, too. And you even let her in your bed? What? You don't care about her germs?"
"Just shut up and check on her," I growled out of gritted teeth.
He chuckled but did as I asked, leaning down and placing his bag on the bed next to her.
"Okay, I'll have an overall assessment of her and see if we can figure out what's wrong." He checked her from head to toe, starting with her shut eyes.
After flashing a light on her, he nodded. "Her pupils are both reactive, and she seems fine."
Then he examined her neck... That's when he paused and frowned.
"What?" I jumped forward, driven by curiosity, and checked what he was talking about.
Just a few steps away, I froze and glared at him.
He gave me an amused look. "You didn't..."
Of course, he fucking recognized the mark.
"Shut it! You know I never like sharing my toys with anyone."
He nodded, disbelievingly. "Of course, of course, whatever you say."
He sprayed alcohol on his hands and stood up. "Anyway, there's not much on her. She'll be fine. The bleeding on her neck from your temporary mark will heal sooner or later."
Sitting back on the sofa, I raised an eyebrow at him. "That's all?"
"Well..." he hesitated.
"Continue!" I pushed.
"There's a few bruises on her arm but it's already healing and almost unnoticeable."
I frowned. "Bruises? Why?"
Did someone hurt her? But if it's from my pack, it should still be fresh. Was it from her pack?
Now, I became even more interested.
"You tell me. All I did was notice it." Fred finished with his assessment, taking her vitals as well. When nothing else seemed out of place, he cleaned and dressed the wound bite on her neck.
I looked at Fred when he stepped away from her, a slight frown marring his face.
"Well, I can't find anything wrong with her except for the nearly healed bruise. She seemed to have only fainted. A bit too deep in my opinion since she won't wake up to any prompts. Let's give it another hour and see if she wakes up on her own."
I grunted. "Fine."
But still, mystery lingered in me, and my heart throbbed in pain as I remembered a feeling from the past that I should have long forgotten.
Sudden screaming and fainting. She wouldn't happen to be... It wasn't that was it?"
Fred managed all of one minute before giving me a furtive glance. "So...thinking of keeping this one for yourself?"
His teasing pulled me off from my reminiscence.
I glared at him, and he held up both his hands in mock surrender. "Geez. It was just a question."
"Well, keep it to yourself, Fred. I don't have the energy to deal with your nosiness right now."
"But you have come to waste on her?" he pursued, which caused him to receive a murderous glare from me.
He put his hand to his chest as if he was hurt by what I said, but he chuckled. "Damn. Okay, You grumpy ass."
Tessa groaned right then, and we both snapped immediately to attention. Her eyelids fluttered open, showing her confused blue eyes staring up as she stared at the two of us peering over her.
It was Fred who spoke first while I remained near the bed, standing with my arms crossed over my chest like some supervisor at the scene.
"Hey. Tessa, right?" he asked gently and waited until she nodded in confirmation.
Then, he held up a couple of fingers. "How many fingers am I holding?"
Her eyes shifted to his fingers. "Three."
"Good. How are you feeling in general?"
She didn't answer immediately, gingerly trying to sit up. I resisted the urge to reach out to her when she winced. The insane protective instincts rapidly awakening in me, irritating me to no end.
Fred helped her get into a sitting position, arranging some pillows over her back. At the sight of that, I felt a bit annoyed. Why need to be so tender?
"I'm okay," she said in a small voice once she was finally seated. "You don't need to check on me anymore. It was nothing. I promise."
"Nothing?" I scoffed.
"You screamed like the hounds of hell were tearing into you and subsequently lost consciousness for almost forty-five minutes. And you tell me it's nothing?"
Fred placed a hand on my shoulder, but I was beyond care.
What I hated the most were the liars. It's obvious that there's more to it. I mean, who would shout like she's been burned alive if it's 'nothing'!
"What. Happened?" I growled insistently.
"Well, if you must know, my fated mate was having sex with his chosen mate, and it hurt like hell. Anything else?" she said as if she hadn't just dropped a bomb that left me gaping slightly.
And just like that, she opened a door in me that I had tried so hard to keep shut.
My jaw clenched together and my hands fisted in fury.
Fred cleared his throat. "Oh, I see. That would explain a couple of things."
Tessa touched the plaster on her neck and glanced back at Fred.
"Thank you," she said simply, and then, to our surprise, she suddenly tried to stand.
"No, no. Stay right there in bed." I said while holding on to Fred's arm at the same time, ready to drag him out of the room immediately.
She was still in that flimsy little gown she'd been dressed in before being brought to me. As much as I liked the look of her in it, the thought of Fred getting an eyeful while she was in such a state brought a growl deep into my belly.
Tessa eyed me warily but didn't argue, remaining in bed as I hurried to chuck a laughing Fred out of my room.
