Chapter 4 Breach Of Contract

A couple more minutes passed before Rhett heard the latch.

Creak...

The door slowly opened, revealing a slender figure on the other side.

The woman that stood before Rhett didn't have the fawning smile she always bestowed on him. She wasn't smiling. Jillian just looked at him blankly and said nothing. A beat passed, and then she turned away.

Rhett entered the bedroom, his eyes immediately landing on the open suitcase on the floor, already half-filled with her clothes. He felt his heart sink for some reason.

"What are you doing?" he asked, slamming the door shut behind him.

"I already told you, I want a divorce," Jillian said without looking up. She carried on packing like he was barely there. "Since we won't be husband and wife soon, there's no reason for me to stay here any longer."

Her father and grandfather's passing was like a massive slap of reality to Jillian.

In just a matter of days, while she and Helena were still in mourning, the rest of the Matthews family had pounced on her father's company and wasted no time dividing his assets among themselves. She had only learned of this after the funeral.

Jillian had only held back from demanding a divorce on account of the Matthews family, how they had taken her in and raised her like one of their own.

But their greed changed everything. It really opened her eyes.

She had nothing left to lose. That meant that she had nothing to fear.

She was free to start over. She would find a job and earn the money for her living expenses, as well as the fees needed for Helena's stay in the nursing home.

"Jillian, enough with this nonsense," Rhett said as he walked up to her and grabbed her wrist. "Grandma wants to see you. Come with me to her house."

Then, as if he had just thought of something, he added, "You know her health isn't the best right now. Don't make unnecessary trouble and worry her."

"You..." Jillian said, only to shut her mouth and inhale sharply.

Due to the questionable circumstances that had led to their marriage, her position in the Wilson family had always been precarious, and they didn't exactly treat her well. Amy Wilson was the only one to show her kindness.

Even if she were to divorce Rhett, Jillian would never dream of refusing to pay a visit to the old woman.

"Fine, I'll go," Jillian said calmly. "But how are you planning to explain our divorce to your grandma?"

"Divorce?" Rhett sneered and chuckled mirthlessly. "It looks like I'll have to drill some facts into that stubborn head of yours. Don't forget the agreement that was signed between our two families. Surely, you still remember how you plotted a scheme to force me into marrying you."

Rhett tossed her hand aside, pulled a cigarette from the pack in his pocket, and lit it.

He knew that Jillian must have had a hard time at the funeral service the previous day due to his absence. Although he was still annoyed with their last meeting, he still had the grace to send Aaron over and extend the utmost courtesy to the Matthews family by offering the proposal.

All things considered, Rhett thought that he had done more than enough as Jillian's husband. What was she so dissatisfied about?

"Of course, I remember the agreement," Jillian said, her voice shaking ever so slightly. "I remember everything."

She had long since grown weary of explaining what had really happened back then. It was all a misunderstanding, but Rhett never believed her. He barely even listened to her.

"Good. Then you should know as well as I do that not only will you get nothing in the event of a divorce, but you will have to pay ten million dollars for breach of contract." Rhett's tone was impassive as he took a drag and blew a puff of smoke. "Where will you even get that amount of money?"

"You don't have to worry about that. I'll get a job and pay you back by installments." Jillian took a deep breath and zipped up her suitcase. Then she pulled its handle out and made to leave the room.

She hadn't even taken two steps when she was suddenly yanked back and into Rhett's arms. His cigarette had fallen to the floor, abandoned and forgotten, and was promptly crushed under his shoe.
