Chapter 4
Of course, I wouldn't let her get what she wanted. After returning home, I "fell ill."
As a premature baby, my body had always been weak since childhood. Ever since my mother passed away, I had been in emotional turmoil. This so-called emotional turmoil is hard to cure, which undoubtedly gave those who wanted to harm me an opportunity.
However, after this out-of-body experience, my health had surprisingly improved a lot.
Nora came to see me, partly to probe why I had suddenly lashed out, and partly to find out if my condition had improved.
"I don't have much time left. In my dreams, I saw my mother telling me to take good care of my younger brother. Naturally, I can't let anyone bully him," I told her.
Nora seemed to breathe a sigh of relief and quickly said, "Sister, what are you talking about? We will invite more renowned doctors, and your illness will surely be cured."
"As for little Victor, he is indeed mischievous. I will make sure Mother disciplines him well."
The medicinal smell in the room was too pungent. Seeing me looking so sickly and as if I wouldn't live long, Nora finally felt at ease and couldn't wait to leave.
The room was filled with a strong medicinal scent, enough to mask any smell of blood.
"Dispose of the body and throw it into the pauper's grave," I ordered.
The body belonged to a maid my stepmother had planted in my courtyard. She had been passing messages for my stepmother and participating in the plot to harm me.
"Miss, Max is here," Grace reported.
"Let him wait," I told Grace.
Coming from a once-prominent family now fallen from grace, I had always despised his fawning demeanor.
This marriage was arranged by my father, who claimed our astrological charts were compatible.
"Grace, go find the master and verify the compatibility of my astrological chart with Max's."
"Yes, Miss," Grace responded and left.
Max waited from noon until sunset before I had someone call him in.
"Haylen, you're finally awake!" Max looked at me with deep affection as soon as he entered.
How revolting.
"Mr. Max, I have just recovered from a severe illness and am still weak. Sorry to keep you waiting," I responded coldly.
"Not at all. It's good to see you safe and sound," Max didn't mind the wait.
Max wasn't as infatuated with Nora as she thought. After all, he only knew Nora as the daughter of a commoner who later entered the Wallace family with her mother.
If my illness truly healed, he would certainly marry me as planned while secretly maintaining his relationship with Nora.
By marrying a noblewoman, he could effortlessly start his official career and rise to power.
At that moment, I suddenly thought, wasn't this the same situation with my father and mother back then?
Father was just a minor official, while Mother was the legitimate daughter of a prominent family in Graiby.
Grandfather admired Father's eloquent speech, steady character, and deep love for Mother. To prevent Mother from participating in the imperial consort selection, he arranged their marriage.
"Miss, Grace has verified your astrological compatibility with Max's," Grace reported back.
"The result shows that our astrological charts are incompatible and harmful to mine."
"Good, that's excellent," I sneered.
It was clear that this marriage was intended to harm me from the start, hastening my demise.
Now, I no longer needed any evidence-the mastermind behind the plot to kill his wife and daughter was none other than Garrett, my so-called good father.
