Suddenly, I was enthralled with fear. What was I doing out here in the woods? My senses clicked, and I realized the situation I was in.
I didn't even know the way back home. How did it get to this?
I perceived the scent again. That familiar scent. This time, I was able to pinch myself. This was real. I wasn't dreaming.
The fear I had was instantly replaced by a wave of exploration. I wanted to see it - to know where it came from.
My feet moved again, and I went deeper and deeper into the woods, following the scent. I expect to see it. The black fur, golden eyes, sharp claws. But instead, it was a man.
It's really late. What would a man be doing here by this time of the night? It's funny how I asked myself that question, considering the fact that I was literally doing the same thing.
I hid behind one of the large trees, watching him from a distance. What was I doing? What if he was a dangerous person?
I retreated slowly, but my left foot hit a rock, making me fall back on the dry grass.
I stood up hurriedly, trying to remove the stuck grass from my clothes. When they failed to get off, I gave up, and resumed spying on the man, but he was nowhere in sight. Where did he go all of a sudden?
The scent vanished, and I hadn't been more disappointed.
Still lost, I sat there on the grass, hoping to find my savior.
The scent came again, but this time, it was sharp. I heard a roar behind me, and I got up instantly triggered with fear.
I looked around myself, but there was nothing in sight. What's going on? Am I going crazy?
And then, I saw a shadowy figure behind me. It looked like a man's figure.
"Mate". He whispered into my ears. His voice was deep and intimidating, still it had a calming essence.
I turned around, and closed my eyes. Now, I wished I was going crazy.
"This isn't real. I'm still dreaming". I said to myself, hoping to wake up from this nightmare. It had to be one of the nightmares I had been having since I got here. My mind was playing some kind of sick trick with me.
He said it again. "Mate", and I knew that this was not a dream. It was my harsh reality.
But, mate? What was he talking about? I had never heard that name before. Perhaps he mistook me for someone else?
I opened my eyes and I saw him. He was tall and muscular, with charming golden eyes. His dark black hair sparkled under the moonlight, and I was blown away by his magnificent beauty.
"I... I think you're mistaken". I said, feeling somewhat intimidated by him.
"Are you okay?" He asked. His voice was heavenly. It made me giddy. What was this feeling?
I couldn't respond. I just stared at him, lost in his attractive golden eyes.
"Your eyes are appealing. Your golden eyes". I said, surprised at my own utterance.
"You shouldn't be wandering around the woods at this hour. This is a different border. It's not safe for you, beauty".
Different border? What was he talking about? Was there another little town hidden in Silverbrooke?
His eyes turned from golden to grey, and I knew that I was going crazy. I shouldn't have wished that earlier.
"Your eyes changed". I said, ignoring what he said.
"You shouldn't be here. It's not safe".
I knew that. I mean, I heard a roar before. I knew it wasn't safe, but I still stayed, giving danger a chance to strike.
"What's your name?" I asked, eager to hear his charming voice again.
"Adrian". He responded, and hearing his voice again was worth it.
Adrian. I had never heard that name before. There was something about this man, and I really wanted to know what it was.
"Nice to meet you Adrian. I'm..."
"June". He said before I completed my sentence.
His eyes changed again.
Who is this man? How does he know my name? I don't know him from anywhere, so how does he know my name? Does it have something to do with the 'mate' word he mentioned earlier?
But before I could ask any of these questions, we heard a roar, coming from the other side of the woods. What was that? Was it a bear?
"Rogues''. He said.
What did he mean? I had never been so confused. Everything happening right now was so surreal. I pinched myself again, hoping to wake up from this dream. But, nothing happened.
"You need to leave right now".
"But..." I tried to say, but he interrupted me immediately.
"Go!" He yelled, his voice even more deep and intimidating.
And so, I ran again through the woods. Where was I going? I didn't know the way back to the cabin, and I was still lost- lost in these woods.
I turned back as I ran, hoping to see him again, but I didn't.
I looked up to the moonlit sky and prayed silently, hoping it'll lead me home.
After running for what felt like hours, I saw the cabin at a distance.
I thanked the moon and stars for hearing me. My prayers were heard.
My mind was now at ease, knowing that I made it here. I made it home.
