Dragging my feet, I went into the living room. Kira was seated with another young girl. At least, I saw her again.
"Hey, June". She greeted me, with her contagious smile.
"Hi Kira". I responded, feeling somewhat shy.
My eyes towards the other girl that sat beside Kira. She had blonde curly hair, and emerald- green eyes. She seemed so engrossed in her phone. I wondered why. Afterall, there wasn't any signal here, so what could she possibly be doing on her phone?
"Hi". I greeted, nervously waving at her.
She turned to face me, and just said "Hey", before going back to whatever it was she was doing on her phone.
"Don't mind her June. She's Melissa. She lives next to me too. We're friends". Kira said, smiling again.
"That's okay, Kira".
"Would you like to hangout?" Kira asked, and I turned to face my mom.
"You can go, June. I'm not going anywhere today". My mom said, flashing me a warm smile.
"Thanks mom". I said, walking over to her, and giving her a tight hug.
"But, be back before sunset, June".
"Okay, mom".
"Let's go". Kira said, and Melissa and I followed her.
********
Silverbrooke wasn't so bad afterall. There were markets, and a few busy streets. I guess I judged it too soon.
Kira and I explored the town, while Melissa was still engrossed in her phone.
We saw some people dancing to some country music, and we went and danced too. Surprisingly, Melissa joined us. I guess there was a heart beneath her cold self.
The sun was starting to set, and I had to head home, because I didn't want mom to scold me again.
"Okay. We can hangout some other time". Kira said, smiling at me.
As we were about to go our separate ways, I noticed some men running in the distance. They were heading to the woods.
I had always been a curious person. And so, curiosity took over, and I had to ask about it.
"Hey, Kira. Who are they? Can we go check what's going on?" I asked, attempting to follow them, but Kira stopped me.
"Don't". She said, holding my arm.
"Why?" I really wanted to go see what they were up to.
"We don't go to those parts of the woods. Rumour has it that supernatural creatures lurk in that area, especially when the sun sets. It's dangerous to go there".
"Dangerous? Supernatural creatures?" Now, I was even more curious.
"If truly it's dangerous Kira, why are those men going in there?"
"They're hunters, June". Melissa finally spoke up. It shocked me because I thought she was bent on giving me the cold shoulder all day.
"Hunters?"
"Yeah. They kill and hunt down these supernatural creatures". Kira said, not smiling this time.
What kind of supernatural creatures?" I asked, still interested.
"That's not necessary, June. All you need to know is that that part of the woods is dangerous. You shouldn't go in there. Like ever". Melissa said, giving me a straight gaze.
"Promise you won't go there, June".
"I promise". I said, but of course I knew I couldn't keep that promise.
"Come on, let's walk you home".
********
Kira and Melissa just accompanied me to my doorstep, before heading back to their respective homes.
It was dark already. Mom was going to kill me for staying out late. I won't hear the end of it.
I said a silent prayer, hoping that she would be asleep. But when I opened the door and entered the cabin, she was standing there, waiting for me.
I knew what was coming next.
"June Ava Everhart! Where the hell have you been!?"
Ugh, I thought this only happened in the mornings.
"I've been worried sick! It's way past sunset!"
Obviously. I knew that. It was dark outside.
I had to come up with an excuse. I couldn't possibly tell her I was about going after some hunters that were trying to kill and hunt down supernatural creatures. She'd think I'm crazy.
"Answer me, you bratty child!"
Wow, she was really pissed this time.
"I'm sorry mom. I didn't realize the time". I said, hoping she'd probably just scoff and leave.
"What has come over you?"
"I'm sorry". I said, meaning it this time.
She gave me a look, and I knew. I was going to do one of her hectic punishments.
She just stared at me, before walking over to the living room.
"Your dinner is already cold. You can warm it up if you like". She said coldly, and went into her room, carrying already sleeping Lelia with her.
I wasn't hungry. So instead, I packed my dinner and placed it gently into the fridge, before heading to my bedroom.
*********
I tried so hard to sleep, but I just couldn't.
Anytime I closed my eyes, I saw its face. It's black fur, golden eyes and sharp claws.
What did it want from me?
Still unable to sleep, I stood up from my bed, and peeped through the window in my room.
I saw how the moon shone in the darkness.
There was just something so beautiful about the moon. I stood there, admiring its beauty.
My mind drifted off to it again. Was it a bear? Was it a supernatural creature too? What if it was out in these woods?
I decided to explore it further. What if it was here? I needed to see.
And I saw myself walking - walking till I got outside under the moonlit night.
