Chapter 6 What If Jonny Finds Out

The star-shaped pendant appeared old, as if it had been cherished by its owner for many years.

Could this be a gift from Jonny's significant other?

This thought pierced Emilee's heart with a sharp pang of pain.

Immediately, waves of guilt crashed over her.

He likely held deep feelings for the owner of the necklace, yet here she was, having spent the night with him, influenced by the drug.

Emilee was instantly filled with regret. Had she maintained control last night, this ridiculous situation would have been avoided.

With these thoughts troubling her, she sought out her coworker, Kathy Hewitt, the one left a reply under Laurie's post, and sent her a message.

"Do you know who Mr. Owens is in love with?"

Kathy was well-known for her sociability and could strike up a conversation with anyone at the office, making her the perfect person for Emilee to consult.

True to form, Kathy responded promptly after receiving the message.

"Don't you know? It's been buzzing in the company's chat group."

Kathy, always enthusiastic, followed up with several 60-second voice messages.

"Who else could it be? The only person Mr. Owens has ever been linked with is Paige Sullivan, the founder of the up-and-coming fashion label, Starlight. They made an appearance together at a recent event, where they looked absolutely perfect together. The internet was all abuzz about them!"

Kathy continued energetically, "Hold on, I'll dig up those photos from the event for you. I've saved quite a few."

"No need," Emilee cut in swiftly. "I was just curious. I still have tasks to wrap up at the office. Talk later. See you soon."

Kathy finally surrendered.

"Fine, go ahead. I'll leave you be."

As they conversed, the car pulled up to the company's entrance.

Upon reaching her floor, Emilee settled into her desk, Kathy's words lingering in her thoughts.

She gave her cheeks a light slap.

No more daydreaming was allowed.

Yesterday's mishap was just that-an accident. After all, once she and Jonny had risen for the day, everything reverted to how it had been, with no paths crossing in the foreseeable future.

She had to completely erase all memories of last night.

Centering herself, Emilee powered up her computer and began to type fervently.

After organizing her documents, she reached for her work USB drive to back up her files, only to discover it missing.

Panic surged through Emilee.

Damn it!

That USB drive held numerous sensitive documents she'd managed since becoming a secretary.

A leak could be catastrophic!

Emilee frantically searched her workspace, but the USB drive was nowhere to be found.

She clutched her phone, wracking her brain.

Right, the restaurant!

That had to be it!

In her nervousness earlier, she probably left it there.

Reflecting on this, Emilee quickly pulled up the restaurant's official website and found the reservation number.

She dialed immediately, anxiety lacing her words as she explained the situation once the call connected.

The staff member on the other end was accommodating and promptly enlisted help to search for the lost item.

"I'm terribly sorry, miss. We've checked the private room thoroughly. Unfortunately, the cleaning crew did not find any lost items."

A wave of panic washed over Emilee. "How could that be? Could you possibly check one more time, just to be sure?"

"We've actually gone over it three times at your request. I'm really sorry, but there is no USB drive in the room you described."

Feeling her strength drain away, Emilee sank back into her chair, overwhelmed.

If the USB wasn't at the restaurant, then it left only one other place it could be.

It could have been in the hotel room where she and Jonny had stayed the previous night.

That USB drive held not only her personal data but also an old resume from a past interview.

If Jonny discovered it, he would realize she was the mysterious woman from last night.
