Chapter 4 Lycan Prince is coming

Lila's POV

"Well, it is a relief that Shawn took the initiative to reject us himself," Yana remarked with a sense of relief.

"I could not agree more. Who knows what kind of fate awaited us if we were stuck with that repulsive playboy?" I sighed, dragging my feet down the stairs.

"Come on, dear. Look on the bright side. With Shawn out of the picture, at least we have one less worry," Yana comforted me.

"Yeah, but is it wrong that I am starting to doubt the significance of the mate bond?" I frowned.

"I understand your hesitation. But perhaps this was just an unfortunate coincidence. The next mate the Moon Goddess lines up for you might be a wonderful man," Yana suggested optimistically.

"Do you really think so? I hope you are right," I replied, though skepticism lingered in my mind.

In the midst of my current circumstances, trapped down here, I could not help but question the possibility of finding true love. Sensing my emotions, Yana gave me some space.

All I wanted was to seek justice for my mother. Despite the obstacles ahead, I was determined to press on for her sake.

Yet, just as I sought a moment of solace, an enraged she-wolf approached me.

"You lazy wretch! Have you been hiding and shirking your duties?" she spat, brandishing a broom threateningly.

Dodging her swing, I fabricated a distraction. "Shawn is looking for you. Seems like there is an issue with the attire," I interjected.

Her demeanor shifted instantly upon hearing Shawn's name. "Why did not you say so? If this affects the proceedings, you will pay for it!" she scolded before hurrying away.

"Prince Damien is attending the ceremony today. Get moving and assist with the preparations! If I catch you slacking again, you will regret it!" she barked before leaving me be.

Upon learning of Prince Damien's presence, an idea sparked in my mind. Perhaps I could plead my case to him. I hastened to the banquet hall, hoping for an opportunity to approach him.

However, my efforts were thwarted by the guards, who barred my entry, citing the prohibition of slaves.

Resigned, I sought refuge in a secluded corner, eavesdropping on nearby she-wolves gossiping.

"I heard Prince Damien is a cruel and lustful despot. Once, he took a female slave to bed and tortured her to death the same night!"

"That rumor has been circulating. It is said he is powerful but devoid of mercy. Even the Lycan king could not rein him in."

"I heard the Lycan king was supposed to attend today, but Prince Damien happened to be passing through, so he is here instead."

"What a shame. I wanted to see the Lycan king. Prince Reese would have been preferable; he is said to be gentle and approachable. Why did we get stuck with the fearsome Prince Damien?"

"Hush! Watch your words! What if Prince Damien overhears you? Do you wish for your demise?"

The she-wolves glanced around nervously, noticing my presence and casting disdainful glances my way.

"Hey, you! What are you staring at?"

"Are you even allowed to be here? Begone from our sight!" they sneered, but I paid them no heed, turning away.

Their contemptuous remarks left me troubled. It seemed Prince Damien and Shawn were alike-disgusting and indifferent to others' lives. Would such a man entertain my plea regarding my mother's unjust fate? Unlikely.

Sighing helplessly, I abandoned the notion of seeking his assistance. Just as I prepared to depart, several werewolves encircled me.

"What do you want?" I asked cautiously.

Before I could react, a sudden blow to the back of my head plunged me into darkness.
