CHAPTER FIVE

AMELIA'S POV

I woke with a groan, my head pounding from the excessive drinking I'd done the night before. As I slowly opened my eyes, the unfamiliar surroundings momentarily disoriented me. But then the events of the previous evening came rushing back - the club, the stranger, the...encounter.

I let out a shaky sigh, running a hand through my tangled hair. What had I done? I had never been the type of woman to engage in a one-night stand, let alone with a complete stranger. But the pain and heartbreak of Jason's betrayal had left me craving that sense of connection, that fleeting escape from reality.

My heart sank as I thought of Jason. I hadn't even seen him when I stumbled into the house late last night. A part of me wondered if he even noticed I was gone. The realization that our marriage had deteriorated to the point where he was indifferent to my whereabouts stung more than I wanted to admit.

The shrill ringing of my phone on the bedside table jolted me out of my brooding thoughts. I glanced at the clock, panic rising in my chest as I saw the time. I was supposed to be at the office over an hour ago!

"Oh no, no, no," I muttered, scrambling to answer the call. "Hello? Anna, I'm so sorry, I overslept-"

"Amelia, where are you?" my secretary's concerned voice cut me off. "Mrs. Jane has been asking about you. She's not happy."

I felt a pit form in my stomach. Mrs. Jane was one of the major shareholders at my father's company, West Enterprise, where I worked. She had never been a fan of mine, always criticizing my performance and questioning my abilities.

"I'm on my way, Anna, I promise," I said, my voice trembling slightly. "Tell Mrs. Jane I'll be there as soon as I can."

I quickly ended the call and rushed to get ready, my mind racing. What if Mrs. Jane had decided to take drastic action because of my tardiness? The thought of losing my job, the one thing that had provided me with a sense of purpose and stability, made my heart pound in my chest.

Within fifteen minutes, I was out the door and speeding towards the office, my stomach twisted in knots. As I pulled into the parking lot, I took a deep breath, trying to compose myself before facing whatever awaited me inside.

When I stepped into the lobby, Anna rushed over to me, her expression grave. "Amelia, Mrs. Jane wants to see you in her office. Now."

I nodded, swallowing hard. "Okay, lead the way."

As I followed Anna down the familiar corridors, I could feel the weight of dozens of eyes upon me. Whispers and hushed conversations seemed to follow in my wake, only adding to the sense of dread that was building within me.

Anna stopped in front of a large oak door, giving me an apologetic look. "Good luck, Amelia. I hope it all works out."

I nodded shakily, then took a deep breath and knocked.

"Come in," a clipped voice called from the other side.

I pushed the door open and stepped into Mrs. Jane's spacious office, my palms sweating. The older woman was seated behind her desk, her sharp gaze fixed on me.

"Ah, Amelia. So glad you could finally join us," she said, her tone dripping with sarcasm.

"Mrs. Jane, I'm so sorry for my tardiness," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "There's no excuse, I-"

"Save it," she interrupted, raising a hand. "The fact is, you've been consistently late and your performance has been subpar. As a major shareholder, I can no longer overlook these issues."

My heart sank as the realization dawned on me. "Mrs. Jane, are you saying...?"

"Yes, Amelia." She leaned back in her chair, regarding me with cold, calculating eyes. "I'm afraid we've decided to relieve you of your duties here at West Enterprise. Effective immediately."

I felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me. Losing my job, my father's company, the one thing I had dedicated myself to for years - it was too much to bear. Tears stung my eyes as I struggled to find the words.

"But...but this is my father's company," I protested weakly. "How can you do this?"

Mrs. Jane let out a derisive snort. "Your father's company, yes. But he's no longer in charge, Amelia. The majority of the shareholders have decided that your leadership is lacking, and we need someone who can truly take the company forward."

I shook my head in disbelief, the tears spilling over onto my cheeks. "No, this can't be happening. I've worked so hard, I-"

"That's enough," Mrs. Jane said, her voice sharp. "Your personal difficulties are not my concern. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a meeting to attend."

She stood up, effectively dismissing me, and I knew there was nothing more I could say. Defeated, I turned and headed for the door, my mind reeling.

As I walked back to my car, the tears flowed freely down my face. I couldn't believe this was happening. First Jason's betrayal, and now losing the one thing that had given my life purpose and stability. It was all crumbling around me, and I felt utterly powerless to stop it.

When I arrived home, I half-expected to find Jason gone, having moved on with his new girlfriend. But to my surprise, he was there, sitting on the couch with a somber expression on his face.

"Amelia," he said, his voice softer than I had heard it in weeks. "I, uh...I didn't expect you to be home so soon."

I wiped at my tear-stained cheeks, unable to meet his gaze. "Well, you got your wish, Jason. I've been fired from my job at West Enterprise."

He let out a heavy sigh, running a hand through his hair. "I'm sorry to hear that, Amelia. I know how much that job meant to you."

I scoffed, the bitterness in my voice palpable. "Spare me the fake concern, Jason. We both know you couldn't care less about what happens to me."

He flinched at my words, his expression darkening. "That's not true. I may have...made some mistakes, but I still care about you, Amelia."

"Care about me?" I cried, the anger and hurt bubbling to the surface. "You cheated on me, Jason! You _betrayed_ me, and now you're kicking me out of our home. How can you possibly still care?"

Jason stood up, his hands raised in a placating gesture. "Look, I know I've messed up, and I'm sorry. But I think it's for the best if we...if we get a divorce."

I felt as if the wind had been knocked out of me. Divorce? After everything we had been through together, he was just going to throw it all away?

"No," I whispered, shaking my head vehemently. "No, I won't sign those papers, Jason. I won't let you just...just _discard_ me like I'm nothing."

He let out a frustrated sigh, his brow furrowed. "Amelia, please. This is hard for me too, but we both know our marriage is over. It's time to move on."

"Move on?" I echoed, my voice cracking with emotion. "How can I move on when my whole world is falling apart? First my job, and now you want to take away the _one_ thing I have left?"

Jason stepped closer, his expression softening slightly. "I know this is difficult, but maybe...maybe it's for the best. You can start fresh, find someone who-"

"Someone who what, Jason?" I interrupted, my voice laced with anguish. "Someone who won't _betray_ me? Someone who will actually _love_ me?"

He flinched at my words, his gaze dropping to the floor. "I...I'm sorry, Amelia. I never meant to hurt you, but-"

"But what, Jason?" I challenged, my tears flowing freely once more. "But you found someone _better_? Someone _more fun_ in bed?"

Jason cringed, his face contorted with guilt. "I...I didn't mean that, Amelia. I was angry, and I said things I didn't mean."

I let out a humorless laugh, the sound bordering on hysterical. "Well, congratulations, Jason. You managed to destroy _everything_ that was important to me. My career, my marriage...you've taken it all away."

He opened his mouth, but I held up a hand, cutting him off. "Just...just give me the damn divorce papers. I'll sign them, okay? I can't be here anymore, I can't _look_ at you."

Jason hesitated for a moment, then nodded solemnly. He disappeared down the hall, returning a moment later with a stack of documents. I snatched them from his hands, my fingers trembling as I scanned the pages.

Without a second thought, I grabbed a pen and scrawled my signature at the bottom, effectively severing the bond that had once held us together. As I handed the papers back to Jason, I felt a strange sense of finality, as if a door had slammed shut on that chapter of my life.

"There," I said, my voice hollow. "It's done. I hope you and your _girlfriend_ are very happy together."

I turned on my heel and fled the house, my mind a whirlwind of emotions. Anger, heartbreak, devastation - they all swirled within me, threatening to overwhelm me. I just needed to get away, to find some semblance of peace and safety.

As I drove aimlessly, tears streaming down my face, I couldn't help but wonder what the future held. With my job and my marriage both gone, I felt utterly adrift, bereft of the anchors that had once given my life structure and purpose.

But somewhere, buried beneath the pain and anguish, a glimmer of determination began to take root. I wasn't going to let Jason and the world's cruelty break me. I had to find a way to pick up the pieces and rebuild my life, even if it felt impossible in this moment.

With a deep, shuddering breath, I wiped the tears from my cheeks and set my jaw, my grip tightening on the steering wheel. I may have lost everything, but I was still Amelia - strong, resilient, and unwilling to give up without a fight.
