Chapter 3 You Are Pregnant

The next day, on my way back home from work, I made arrangements for the divorce papers and I signed on it. As soon as I got home, I knew I couldn't face my husband when he realises I had had a one night stand with his father and in addition, I can't stay in a marriage where my husband is having an affair with my best friend.

Clutching the divorce papers in my hands, I made my way to his room.

I barged in, my eyes heavy with weariness.

"I have a question." My words slurred wearily. Why did you do it? Was I not enough?" The words escaped my lips, trembling with a mix of hurt and anger.

His eyes narrowed, devoid of any remorse. "I never loved you," he replied, his words laced with callous indifference. "I only agreed to marry you because of the financial help you offered me back then in university and because of the sacrifices you made to see me happy. Marrying you was simply a way to say thank you."

His words felt like a thousand daggers piercing my fragile heart. I felt my world collapse around me, the weight of his betrayal suffocating any hope that remained. How could he be so cruel? How was I so blind?

As his words engulfed me, everything became a blur as my tears covered my view. I clutched the divorce papers tighter. In that moment, I realised that the love I thought we shared was nothing but an illusion by his selfish desires.

Tears welled up in my eyes even more. I couldn't understand how someone could be so callous, so unfeeling. All the memories we made together suddenly felt hollow and meaningless.

I choked back the tears and uttered the words. "Here's a divorce paper. I already signed. Your signature is needed," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Without saying a word to me, he snatched the paper and pen from my hands and tore the papers as he then threw them at my face, the act a final blow to my shattered heart. I watched helplessly as he turned his back and walked away, leaving me standing there, broken and alone.

As I crumpled to the floor crying, I picked my phone and called my lawyer. Booking an appointment but I was disappointed when he said his schedule was full for this month. So he decided and concluded that my husband and I should see him last week of the next 2 months, which I later informed my husband about. The lawyer wants to see us. That's a long time... I'll be staying with this monster of a husband for the next two months before I get to see the lawyer for my divorce.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months in the blink of an eye. I couldn't share my matrimonial room and bed with my husband anymore. I had to start sleeping in the guestroom.l. On several occasions, while my father in law is away, my husband would bring home my best friend and most times, I see them make out, her moans feeling the room. I would always cry my eyes out and wonder what I had done to her to make her treat me this way.

On this day, I sat at my desk in my room engrossed in my work as the soft glow of my laptop illuminated my face. However, I suddenly started to feel unease.

I paused for a moment. What could be causing this sudden uneasiness? I tried to shake it off, thinking maybe it was just stress getting the best of me. But the feeling persisted, short breaths escaped my lips, my heart beating faster in my chest.

Suddenly, the feeling of nausea crashed over me. I clutched my stomach, desperately trying to steady myself.

I stumbled towards the bathroom and fell to my knees, clutching the porcelain toilet bowl as vomit poured out my throat.

Tears filled up in my eyes as I retched, gripping the toilet seat tightly

I wiped away my tears, slowly rising from the cold floor as I put a call to my doctor and informed him that I was coming for a check up.

Arriving at the doctor's office, I took a deep breath and walked inside, anxiously waiting my turn. The minutes ticked away slowly. Finally, my name was called, and I entered the doctor's office.

Dr. Evans greeted me with a warm smile. We exchanged a few pleasantries, but I could hardly focus on the small talk. My mind was consumed by my worries.

Finally, Dr. Evans cleared his throat and began, "I understand that you've been feeling unwell lately." He examined my body and after a series of tests, he asked me to wait outside while the result was getting ready. A few minutes later, he called me back into his office.

"Sorry for keeping you waiting. I have the test results right here with me." He held up a small file and glanced at it before continuing. "I have both good news and something you may consider unexpected."

My heart skipped a beat. Good news? Unexpected? My breath hitched in my throat, waiting for him to proceed.

"You, Ava," he said softly, his tone filled with compassion, "are one month pregnant."

Time stood still as those words reverberated through me. Pregnant? My mind couldn't process it all at once.

"You're pregnant," Dr. Evans repeated, his voice filled with congratulatory warmth. "Congratulations, Ava."

A tear escaped my eye, rolling down my cheek. I didn't know if it was good news or a bad one. I don't even know who is responsible for my pregnancy.

Dr. Evans handed me a tissue as I wiped away more tears.

"Tears of joy, I understand how happy you are and I'm sure your husband will be the happiest man to hear this." He said.

I nodded. "Thank you doctor. I should be on my way home."

As I left the doctor's office and made my way home, my tears didn't cease to drop.
