It had to be known that he had known Irene for a long time. For years they had been best of friends and in all this time she had never had the urge or wanted to be a cultivator.
She was a carefree soul that liked her simple lifestyle, so she had never taken the test to see if she had a Spirit root. So it was extremely unexpected that not only did she have a Spirit root, but a Supreme spirit root with an elemental affinity.
"Silence! That's enough, everyone please be quiet." The official called out while trying to regain his calm himself.
There were five crystals on each side of the testing mechanism, and there were five grades of Spirit roots. low, advanced, high, top and supreme grade. Each one lighting up indicated a rise in the grade of the spirit root detected.
Normally, when a spirit root was detected the crystals would give a pure White light, it would only show a different colour when an elemental affinity was detected. Red meant fire affinity, orange meant earth affinity, Golden yellow meant metal affinity, green meaning wood elemental affinity, Azure for wind element, blue for water element, Violet for lightening affinity, a milkfish colour for light Black for darkness and so on.
Majority of people that awaken spirit roots did not have elemental affinities. In fact people that had elemental affinities were extremely rare no matter the grade of spirit root awakened.
Only one in a thousand low grade spirit roots might be found to be an advanced grade spirit root, maybe another one in a thousand advanced grade spirit roots may be a high grade spirit root, with one in a thousand having a top grade spirit root. However even one in ten thousand top grade spirit roots you may not find a single Supreme grade spirit root.
But not only did this little lady have a supreme grade spirit root she also had a wood elemental affinity.
It was because the official knew the gravity of the current situation that he was finding it hard to calm himself down.
"Little lady, what is your name." a White haired elderly man seated at the front of the Hall suddenly spoke drawing everyone's attention.
Seeing this old man personally step forward to invite Irene, everyone immediately quieted down.
"Umm. I I I'm I Irene s sir." Irene stuttered a little spooked at all the sudden attention.
" Irene, that's a beautiful name. There's no need for you to be afraid, no one will harm you.
Young miss, you have the potential to be a powerful cultivation genius if you would like to join the academy you can join free of charge. You don't have to give an answer now,you can wait and discuss it with your family and elders first." The old man said in a kind voice.
The whole crowd was immediately silenced. It was to be known that for him to be seated at the top the academy officials that meant he must have a supreme status and authority. There was only one place he could have come from for him to have such authority, The Hegemon of the Burning lotus Kingdom. The Royal Family.
No one could compete for supremacy with them in the whole Burning lotus kingdom. Talk less of within the Royal city, in their Royal academy which was their territory.
Irene was still a little uncomfortable in her current position , but a quick look over at Rex, who smiled and nodded encouragingly at her calmed her a little.
"Thank you, Sir." She managed to squeeze out the words with a bow to the old man.
"Very good, you can go. The test continues." The old man nodded sending her off, with his last statement directed at the bald official.
"Yes sir. Thank you, sir. The tests continue, next please." The official bowed respectfully to the old man, and turned back to the crowd.
Irene quickly returned to Rex's side under numerous envious gazes.
"Looks like I'll have to be more well behaved around you so you can take good care of me from now on. Oh beautiful genius fairy Irene look after me." Rex bowed 'respectfully'. A teasing smile on his face.
"Stop that, stop teasing me. Humph, who'd take care of you? So you mean you won't have been more well behaved if this didn't happen huh. Just wait." Irene snorted as she wrinkled her little nose.
"What! What are you talking about? I'm always very well behaved. I'm the most well behaved person I know, well with you being the exception." Rex defended himself puffing his chest out, but then retracts scratching his nose unconfidently seeing the disdainful look in her eyes.
" Okay stop looking at me like that, it's my turn now wishbme luck?" Rex waved at her and walked up to the testing mechanism.
"Good luck!" She cried out as he stepped forward.
At this moment everyone focused their sights on the young man that had just stepped up and the crystals on the testing mechanism.
They had noticed that this young man seemed to be close to the genius fairy Irene with the wood elemental affinity and supreme spirit root. Could he possibly be another genius?
"Please put your hand on the testing crystal." The official said as he activated the mechanism.
Rex nodded and raised his hand to the crystal.
When Jian Chen placed his hand on the testing crystal, the official extended his own arm to activate the mechanism.
Immediately, Rex could only feel an odd type of energy pulse from the stone and into his arm. While the energy felt odd to him, it entered his body quite gently where it slowly circulated around before pulsing back out from his body and into the crystal and into the mechanism.
The stared at the testing crystals for any change
in color, but after a short period of time, there was no change at all. Not even a single shade
of color other than its original one could be
seen.
The official sighed relieved. The crowd was also relaxed yet also slightly disappointedly, he announced. "Age,nine. Spirit root, none detected. You cannot be a cultivator."
Like a sledge hammer to the chest, those words struck him.
'Cannot be a cultivator?' This hit him hard yet he didn't react openly. Nodding in acknowledgement he turned and stepped away from the testing device, returning to his position.
"Don't be sad Rex, you still have some time. Don't worry I'm sure you'll soon awaken your spirit root." Irene held his hand as she tried to comfort him.
"Lady Irene? Lady Irene." At this moment a ruckus started at the Hall's entrance, as four guards clad in armor stepped in.
"Ah finally we found you. Lady Irene we've all received the news, your grandfather has as well and has ordered that we bring you to him. You must return with us to the Alchemy Hall this instant.
"But but..."Irene tried to say something but was cut short.
"Come Lady Irene. come we must return quickly."They said as they surrounded her and led her out of the academy not even leaving her time to say good bye to Rex before being dragged off. But Rex noticed the scorn and disdain in the looks they cast at him as they forcefully led her away.
"Wait, I recognise her now. Isn't that little lady miss Irene, the little granddaughter of the old man from the Alchemy Hall?"
"Hey,you're right. It really is the Alchemy Hall's little princess. I've seen her before with her Grandfather, only she was much younger back then."
"As expected of a direct descendant of the old man. The Alchemy Hall has gained a genius."
"Yes, maybe only someone like that can have such a genius descendant."
"Wait. But doesn't that other one resemble the legendary trash Leonis Rex."
"You're right, it is him. So he doesn't even have a spirit root, as expected of the legendary trash of the kingdom."
"Yes. It's a shame though. Not all descendants can be as great as their parents."
"You mean his father?"
"Ah just forget about it. To think trash like him is the great war gods descendant. The disappointment brings a tear to my eye."
As the crowd clamored Rex smiled bitterly and left the academy.
