The atmosphere is so intense. I knew there was a problem but the way Alex looked at me made me even more nervous. I really wanted to know but at the same time, no. I put down my cup and gave him my full attention.
"What is it?"
I can't help but to think something. What if I wasn't really invited to that event and the email was wrong? But that's impossible, isn't it? Shena was the one who signed me up even though I didn't know anything at first.
He took a deep breath before speaking. "We were matched by the matchmaking service," he finally confessed, My lips parted way and I couldn't utter a word to say.
"Our conversation, Isabella, wasn't a random chance. It was planned by the service, and there's a three-month agreement that connects us." he added.
Those words added weight to the atmosphere. My mind raced to understand the implications of his revelation. Matched by a service? A contract?
My thoughts swirled, and I took a moment to process what he had just said. Three months. I am not aware of this. I know the event was interacting between the wealthy people and like me but I didn't know it would be this serious.
"Alex," I finally managed, "I don't understand, I never remember that I signed up for any contract that concerns about the event"
I don't know how to react. I could never have imagined that my life would turn out like this. I let the rich people play my life.
He nodded, understanding the shock in my voice. "I know you didn't, Isabella. And I want you to know that I'm aware of your feelings about this. However, the events is not about your approval. The rules began when you attend the event and your name automatically signed up. But based on your actions, you did not seem to be aware about the purpose of the event"
My eyebrows met at what I heard. I didn't know because I thought I would just attend but they have a trick. I was stunned by what I heard.
"What's the rules?" I said while not looking at him and trying to take in everything he said but I guess I was feverish with the weight of what I heard.
Honesty, I want a peaceful life but now it's ruined here. This is not a normal event, it was like they played a game in each individuals. Rich people think they can do everything because of money.
"If the woman chooses not to fulfill her responsibility, she's required to pay triple the amount that the man paid to match them." I gasped and was disappointed when I realized everything.
"So, what? You're telling me that I have to spend time with you just because you paid for it?" My frustration was evident in my expression.
Alex's eyes met mine "I don't want you to think of it that way, Isabella. I genuinely want to get to know you, and I'm not trying to force anything. But I also don't want you to have to bear the financial burden of the contract."
My shoulders dropped when I heard that. a mix of anger and resignation settling within me
"This is so unfair."
"I know," Alex replied, his tone sympathetic. "I wish there was another way, but the rules are set."
I took a deep breath, my eyes locked with his. I have no choice in the first place. If I don't agree, I can pay. Even though I didn't ask how much, I knew it was a lot. I can't really get this game.
"Fine. I'll honor the contract, but don't expect me to pretend that everything's fine"
Come to think of it, These events are possible when the creator is rich. I just don't realize it sooner when I heard what the host said during that event. I thought it was the women themselves who chose and there was no force that would happen.
Alex nodded "Thank you, Isabella. I promise to respect your feelings throughout this."
A call also caught our attention. I took the cellphone from the bag because the sound was coming from me. The caller was Shena.
"Can I excuse myself first?" Alex nodded so I immediately stood up and pressed the answer button and walked out of the restaurant.
"Bess! Where are you?"
"I'm in the restaurant near the University. Why?"
"Huh? Why are you there? It's late?"
I scratched the back of my neck. "it's a long story. I'll tell you later."
"Okay, just go straight here to my Condo. Just sleep here too."
I didn't make excuses because I also had a plan to sleep there. There is no class tomorrow because it is Saturday and my work at the Bar is in the afternoon.
"Alright, I'll just message you when I get there." I ended the call.
I looked at Alex inside the restaurant. I can see him through the glass wall. I need to know who Alex is before I go with him. Shena is the only one I can talk to about this because their family doesn't get caught when it comes to rich people.
Alex looked up at me before smiling when I approached the table and sat in my seat earlier. I didn't reciprocate because I was still confused by the setup of our situation.
"When do we start playing this kind of thing?" I asked directly. He raised his eyebrows.
"play? So you think this is a game?" The change in his tone when he said that didn't escape me as if he was dissapointed by what I said.
"Yes. Is there something wrong with what I said?" He must have noticed my irritation so he just smiled while looking at me. He was smiling a while ago and it was irritating because I knew it was fake. He was not happy.
He probably thought that I would immediately follow and be nice because we had a match that only he knew about. I didn't even understand the setup of their games.
He sighed and stood up from the chair. "Let's end this discussion for now. I'll take you."
"It's okay. I still have somewhere to go." He glanced at me.
"Then, I'll take you where you're going. It's getting late already. I don't want you to travel alone. I'm the one who invited you here in the first place." I stood up and turned my back immediately.
"Fine. I don't want to argue anymore" And walked out the door. He insisted so I just gave away. Maybe she's okay with me than someone I don't know, especially since Shena's condo is far away from the University. My apartment is closer to here but the bar where I work is closer to Shena's Condo and I also have clothes with me.
When we reached Shena's Condo, Alex and I didn't speak for the entire flight. I won't say anything to him either, so it's better this way.
I have already removed the seatbelt when I finally look at Alex on the driver's seat.
"Thank you." he looked at me but he was no longer smiling and just nodded. He suddenly became cold when I didn't expect it. I don't want to ask because I should be the one who is cold to him now but it seems to be the other way around. Maybe he's still thinking about what I said? It's true.
When I got out of his car, he quickly started it before I walked into the building. I still can't believe what Alex said and even now I'm still thinking about our conversation earlier.
"Besss!" It squealed when the door was opened while hugging me as if we hadn't seen each other for a long time.
I was about to speak when he immediately pulled me inside so I just let him go until we sat down in the living room.
"Bess! We met last night!" he screamed like a worm sprinkled with salt. I know who he's talking about. He's had a crush on her for a long time because he's an actor, but I'm not betting on him because he's a woman.
"Just in case," He snorted. "We did meet, but he was entertaining another woman! He even saved her! It's annoying, we're still talking!"
I went home. "Don't be too affected, you were just spoken to. It didn't become you."
He rolled his eyes at me and leaned back on the couch while crossing his arms. "You're really bitter! Can't you just support?"
"I will support you if you choose green flag. You are too colorblind so even though it is very red, you still go." It snorts.
"Ehh, that's because. He's handsome and rich. Besides, I just have a crush on him, okay? I'm not yet at the point where I'm in the love part."
"Okay." I answered sparingly.
He looked at me suspiciously. "It's obvious you don't believe it!"
I rolled my eyes again.
"Absolutely not! Look at your Condo!" I pointed to the posters of the single face around "That man's face is pure! You are too obsessed with that red!"
"Ehhhh. You can't be obsessed! I'm a fan, okay? It's normal to have a crush on your idol. You don't experience it because you don't like handsome people! You're too attached to that lizard-looking guy!"
I stood up and waved at him
"Are you making me angry girl?"
He backed away quickly because of my frowning face especially and I really don't want to mention that man. Shena made a peace sign while hiding on a small pillow.
"I'm sorry. It's you!" I didn't look at him anymore and sat on the couch angrily. It turns out that Shena doesn't know what happened earlier with Kalel and me. I don't want to say that yet because I might see Shena inside the dean's office because of her bad behavior.
I looked at his open laptop and frowned because of the familiar face posted there. Shena quickly closed her laptop because I might scold her again for stalking her girl crush, but that was not what aroused my attention.
"What's that?" I caught something familiar. I stood up and walked in his direction.
"B-bes, promise! Only now!" I grinned at him and pushed him to the side so he fell on the couch. I opened his Laptop again and read an article.
"When did you become interested in them?" Shena asked when she noticed that I was no longer speaking while looking at her laptop. It approached me and also looked at what I had been reading.
"Shena, Do you know this guy? I mean personally?" I pointed to a man who wasn't even smiling who was part of the Top Entrepreneur of the year.
"Not much, but I heard that he was part of the growth of a Matchmaking service that you went to. But I didn't hear that he went to that event. Wait? Did you meet him? Was he there at the event?"
I bit my nails when I read the other details about him and the achievements he got especially the service that I never thought I thought he was just participants.
I face palm because of the discovery. I didn't know that he was this important and rich. "I met him," I almost whispered, surprising Shena.
He immediately made me face him with wide eyes. "What? Are you sure about that? When? Where?" He asked one question after another as he exaggeratedly shook me. I think my braincells were damaged for a moment.
"Wait! Stop it." He stopped and was still staring at me in shock.
"At the event and earlier. S- he was the one who drove me." He was stunned by what he heard but later laughed that he thought I was just joking.
"Well, please, okay? What you're saying is impossible. Montgomery was recognized because he only travels around the country once. He prefers to go outside the country with his sugarbabies. And that doesn't happen without bodyguards."
I snorted. "You still won't believe me if I tell you I'm his next match?"
He gaped and a few seconds before returning and closing his mouth completely. "That's not funny, Bella! Are you saying you really met at the event? It's not a joke?"
My forehead creased. "Do I look like a liar? You've been hiding more from me."
"I-I can't! I'm telling you. Like my crushes, the ones I go to. That's it! I can't hide anything. Promise!" It's even higher than the palm of my hand, knowing that I just rolled my eyes.
I respect her decision for not telling me all her secrets because people need privacy and all secrets should not be revealed right away even if it's a close friend, but there are times when I really get irritated with Shena because when it concerns me, she hides it.
Like before when I had an enemy at school and I was invited to the back of the school but what he said was that my enemies didn't show up but I just discovered that he fought and that they were still the principal because he pulled the girl's hair all the way up the teacher saw him, and reported him immediately.
I was happy that she did that to protect me but I don't want to bring her more into my own problems. It is especially connected to me. I have many enemies though, I don't know but I experienced being bullied because their reason is that I take their boyfriends. I'm not doing anything and I'm just quiet on the side.
Although I met Kalel first than Shena and I still remember that his attitude was bitchy and he was also one of the bullies I used to have.
