Chapter 7 Service

The afternoon was the time when the Wijaya family relaxed to welcome the evening. In the living room, Frans was watching sports news on the television, while Wendi was doing something at the dining table to prepare the dinner menu.

"How come they haven't come down yet, Frans? Arka hasn't eaten lunch yet either. It's been an hour, you know," Wendi said.

The living room was not too far from the dining room so she didn't have to raise her voice. Frans smiled sarcastically, reluctantly glancing upstairs.

"It's up to her. If she cared, she would have gone downstairs and prepared food for her husband. Arka can eat in his room, right?"

"You are getting rude to Lisa. Don't do that!" Wendi reprimanded, still polite.

Frans didn't care and took the remote to switch the good program to another channel.

"I didn't mean that. Arka just spoiled her too much. Arka said Lisa refused the surrogacy program. It's still fortunate that her husband is willing and patient with a wife who can't get pregnant. Even using the event to choose everything. That's called not being self-aware," Frans exclaimed very sarcastically.

Wendi stopped what she was doing. She turned to her maid to take over. Frans had to be given some understanding. Wendi left her duties and sat beside him.

"I understand what Lisa means. Maybe for you and Arka, it's just a way to get their bloodline. But for a woman, before becoming a mother, she wants to feel pregnant. Lisa just wants to carry her baby, to feel the sensation of the fetus kicking and developing in her belly. If surrogacy means borrowing another woman's womb, maybe Lisa is sad because forever she can't enjoy the role of a woman who conceives and gives birth."

Wendi's explanation was only responded to sarcastically by Frans.

"Does she have another choice? Whether it's her womb or another woman, the most important thing is that she provides offspring for the Wijaya Family. Did I make her disabled? And what did my son do wrong to keep obeying her when she is a woman with shortcomings?"

Wendi did not respond again. Not only Frans, she also wanted a biological grandchild. She couldn't blame Arka for still trying to cure Lisa. It just takes patience.

Meanwhile, Arka and Lisa were still enjoying themselves in their room. Arka dried his hair after shampooing. His other hand was still busy opening files on the table.

"Do you have anything else to do? Do you want to eat in the room?"

His wife was still busy gathering other dirty clothes to put in the basket. Arka hadn't noticed Lisa since earlier.

"Yes, we'll be down soon. Before I left home, I ate on the way. So I think we'll eat later tonight," said Arka.

Lisa accidentally dropped a basket of dirty clothes in the corner of the closet. She bent over slightly and felt pain in her back. Surprised to see what Lisa did, Arka immediately threw his towel and approached his wife.

"Uh, what do you want?" asked Arka as he pulled Lisa's waist away.

Lisa knitted her eyebrows and said, "I'm taking the clothes to the washing machine. Why?"

Arka chuckled. He brought Lisa to sit on the bed. It was he who picked up the clothes and gathered them into the blue basket.

"They say you can't get tired. So from now on, don't do any more work," Arka ordered in a gentle tone.

"I will wash them with a machine, right? It's not tiring either."

"No. I'll let the maid do the laundry."

"What about my bra? Our underwear?"

Arka chuckled. He tidied up the pile of dirty clothes and moved the basket to the corner of the door.

"I'll do the washing myself. Yours too," Arka chuckled.

"What?"

"It's normal, Lisa. I used to do everything myself. Your husband has been independent since he was a kid. Cooking, washing, I've done everything since then. Hey, be grateful, where else can you find a perfect husband like me?"

Lisa smiled. She was lucky to have a man like Arka as her life partner.

Lisa got up and pulled Arka's arm to face her, not caring if her husband had to be cornered against the wall. She just wanted to express how much she loved him with a gentle hug.

"You're right. I'm grateful that you never gave up on me," Lisa recalled with water starting to well up in her eyes.

Arka smiled slightly. His hand gently brushed Lisa's cheek. "Stay healthy and give birth to a child for me. I want to be able to tell him how much I love his mother."

Lisa nodded and hugged Arka. She let go of all her burdens in her husband's arms.

'I'm sure you'd be angry if you knew the truth. But just like you, I also want to give birth to a child who can take care of you if I can't survive later,' Lisa whispered inwardly while occasionally kissing Arka's shoulder.

Destiny will bring the end of their story. Arka couldn't wait to tell his parents. He reached for the envelope on the table that was Lisa's test result. His steps were hurried as Lisa followed behind him with slow steps.

Her husband's behavior was like a child who had just been given candy. Lisa was deeply moved by it.

Arka arrived in the living room and saw his parents standing up to leave the living room.

"Dad!"

Arka immediately rushed into his father's arms. Wendi didn't understand and turned to his daughter-in-law. Lisa just smiled, signaling that they would hear it directly from Arka.

Arka continued to tighten the hug, even though he hadn't gotten a reply from Frans.

"Hey, what's wrong with you?"

Arka loved his father so much. How much he feared he would disappoint him constantly. He almost cried because he was sure his parents would be happy to hear this news.

"Don't worry, I'll make you happy as soon as possible."

Frans released Arka's embrace. His son bit his lower lip, showing how impatient he was after handing him the envelope. He walked away from them and hugged Lisa's shoulder.

Frans and Wendi opened the piece of paper. Their faces began to change. Wendi was the first to smile and hold back emotion.

"Are you pregnant, Lisa?" asked Wendi.

She immediately approached and hugged her daughter-in-law. Meanwhile, Frans began to smile even though he hadn't spoken yet. He just looked at Arka and nodded as an expression of his happiness. Emotional smiles filled the day that began in the afternoon. They took turns hugging until finally, Lisa realized that her decision was right.

"Take good care of your womb. Give me a handsome grandson who will be the successor to Wijaya. Okay?" said Papa Frans while rubbing Lisa's head.

They were very happy. There was no reason for Lisa to be sad. All the sacrifices she would make would not be in vain considering this family had been so good to her all this time.

"Because of Lisa's illness, her uterus is very weak. She can't move much, especially since early pregnancy is very vulnerable. I'm going to ask Lisa to go on total bed rest and not do any work," Arka said.

"Yes, we will help you to take care of Lisa," said Wendi.

Not long after, the sound of a car engine was heard entering the yard. Their little boy had come home from his extracurricular activities at school. His small steps were accompanied by a faint smile. Before he reached the living room, Arka ran to him.

"Papa?"

Farrell was thrilled that his father had finally returned home after his job in Bogor.

Arka immediately bent down to reach Farrel. Farrel was getting taller every year. Even so, Arka still liked to hold Farrel when he missed his son the most.

"I miss you," Arka said.

"Me too. But put it down, Pa! I'm going to take a shower, it's so hot."

"Don't want to congratulate mom and dad? You're going to have a little brother soon!"

Arka lowered Farrel from his arms. The boy smiled happily and couldn't wait to hug his mama. He ran over so he could hug Lisa. He crashed his body into hers. Lisa was a little surprised but didn't move Farrel away from her.

"What are you doing?!" screeched Frans.

They were shocked when Frans pulled Farrel and threw him to the floor. Frans was just a reflex because maybe Farrel would hurt Lisa. He did not expect his actions to cause Farrel to fall to the floor. Although initially very surprised, Frans changed his expression to a colder one.

"Dad!"

Farrel was shocked by his grandfather's harsh treatment. Although he wanted to cry, he tried to restrain himself. Arka helped him to stand up, checking if anything hurt.

"Don't be so rude! Lisa is going to give you a grandchild, so please be nice to Farrel!" Arka was annoyed.

Frans remained silent for a long time. His eyes were fixed on Farrel who was still scared as he wiped away his tears.

"Warn him to be more careful. Keep him away from Lisa! I don't want Lisa to get hurt because of his carelessness. You know how naughty he can be, don't you? I don't want him to bring bad luck to my grandchild!"

Frans walked away. Farrell cried and ran to his room. Seeing his father's rude behavior, Arka remained silent. His face looked sad and he kept staring at the door of Farrel's room.

"Dad hasn't changed, Lisa. What should I do? I thought things would get better if you knew you were pregnant. But my son ...."

Lisa didn't speak and hugged Arka. She rubbed her husband's back for comfort. Arka loved Farrel very much. Even though he was going to get a biological child, Farrel was in his world for the last ten years.

Unlike the two of them, Wendi immediately followed her husband into the room with an angry look. She yanked on the door knob and found Frans sitting on the bed.

"What is this, Frans? Lisa already proved that she would give you a biological grandchild, so why are you still rude to Farrel? What's wrong with that boy? I know you love Farrel. Why do you keep denying him? What is his fault that he has to bear this much hatred? We raised him from a baby. Can't you think of him as your grandson?"

Frans was silent. He lowered his head slightly and massaged the back of his neck. "I didn't mean to, Wendi. I was just surprised that he was so careless and bumped into Lisa."

"Next time, please be more fair to Farrel."

Frans didn't care. He lay down and turned his back to his wife. A sigh was all the wife could express for her husband's arrogance that could never change.
