Chapter 8 Frustrated

I suddenly had a flash back on what she'd said to me and the evil looks in her eyes as she'd stared at me with pure hatred.

"You must not compare, Amyra. Everyone is different."

"Different for sure. You're good different. They're bad different."

He chuckled.

"How's your back feeling now?"

"I guess I'll have to find out later. You just applied the ointment."

"That's true."

"Thank you."

Luthan shook his head.

"Nothing to be thankful for. I'm just doing what anyone would do."

He repeated.

"Just accept my gratitude, Luthan."

"You're welcome, Amyra."

Then he emitted a light chuckle.

"Don't you think you should be outside?"

"Why?"

"What if someone comes and sees you in here?"

"No one will."

I made to get up from his legs. It was an action I did with some regret because I truly enjoyed having him in here with me. He made the depressing cell a lot better to be in.

"We can't stretch our luck further than we already have. Someone might come in and see you."

The encounter I had with the Luna not too long ago was still fresh in my mind and now that I was thinking of it, I was scared. No telling what she would do if she came in here to see Luthan and I in that position.

"But I don't think that would be the case."

He was a bit hesitant getting up. He didn't want to leave, I got that. And I didn't want him to too but the control was out of our hands.

"I don't want to put you in trouble, Luthan."

"But I've been helping you and there have been no trouble so far."

"Yet. We can't keep wishing there won't be any trouble. Please, Luthan. It's bad enough I have to deal with the cruelty of the Alpha and his Luna. Including you in that cruelty is just pure selfish. And I am naturally anything but."

He stood and took out the bowl of water that was now very tepid bordering on going completely cool. I saw him round a dark corner. When he came back, the bowl was empty. He took the towel and pocketed the small container that held the ointment. Then he left the cell.

"Are you sure you'll be fine alone? I mean your back's not healed yet. You can't risk lying on the bare floor."

He asked. His genuine concern for me was heartwarming. I smiled despite the fact I wanted to sigh in sadness over his leaving.

"I'll manage, Luthan. Thank you."

I replied him kindly. Letting my gratitude show in the wide spread of my lips.

"If you insist."

He locked the cell while keeping eye contact with me. I felt myself flush at the intensity of his stare.

"I'll be back. Let me drop these."

He gestured towards the empty bowl and damp towel he was holding.

"Please be safe. Don't get caught."

I quickly said before he went away.

"I won't."

He turned to reply and went away. Momentarily leaving me to my own thoughts. Then the whole episode of what had transpired between the Luna and I came rushing back into my mind and I broke into a bout of sorrowful tears. What did the Luna want with me? Why had she made the statement she made? What was wrong? What did the Luna have against me? I was beginning to think that the Luna had a personal vendetta against me. But where have I offended her?

"Amyra?"

I wiped my eyes. Trying to make vanish any trace that I'd been crying. I didn't know what to tell Luthan.

"Amyra?"

He called again.

"You're back. That was fast."

I tried to make my voice normal. Putting effort to keep the pain and agony out of my voice.

"You're crying?"

Luthan questioned.

"Me? No. I have not. Why would I cry?"

I denied.

"Let me see your face."

I went mute and I didn't turn.

"I'll come inside if you won't let me see your face."

I kept him silent. But when I heard the clank of keys against the cell bars, I quickly turned.

"See me. I'm fine. Totally fine."

I didn't want him to come inside. The Luna was an unpredictable being, she'd just let me know that after her unexpected visit today. She could kill Luthan. The Moon Goddess knew what lies she might tell about Luthan to the Alpha who would take her word for it and punish poor Luthan.

"You're sure you're totally fine?"

"Yes."

"You're lying. You've been crying ever since I left to drop the things I used to tend your wound."

I refused to say any other word, struggling to hold back the tears. I hated crying this much but I just couldn't help it.

"Tell me, Amyra. What's wrong? Is it the Luna? Are you still hung up over what she did to you?"

Tears trailed down my cheeks as I bit the inside of my lower lip hard that I could almost taste blood. I knew I wouldn't be able to say anything without falling apart. And I also knew that if I did, Luthan might want to come inside.

"Let's forget this issue, Luthan. I'll be fine."

"But you're not fine."

"That's why I said I'll be fine."

"You need to talk to me. What happened? What did the Luna say to you when she came in here?"

"Drop it please Luthan."

"Not when it has you all distraught and crying."

I sniffled, wiped the single tear that had detoured to my nose and tickled me there.

"I'm good."

We both went silent after that and I went back to turning my back on him. What was my future? How long would I stay here? From the way the Luna had sounded, I had a very bad feeling that she might not want me out of here.

"You're still crying, Amyra."

I didn't reply him.

"Amyra?"

"Mind your business."

I snapped at him. I knew he was just being concerned and caring but at the moment, I was not in the mood.

"I understand you're angry and gloomy, but you need to take it easy on yourself. Don't let whatever the Luna had done to you get to you."

"Easy for you to say."

"No. It's not easy for me to say. I just..."

But I whirled on him before he could finish his sentence. Every rationality flew out the window in that instant.

"Can't you understand that I need to be left alone? Leave me, Luthan!"
