Chapter 4 There's Nothing To Miss

Madison's words seemed to sober Lorenzo up.

He paused, pulled out a cigarette, and then lit it. Unsurprisingly, he didn't take her seriously and just glanced at her, asking, "Are you sick or something?"

"I am," Madison replied, sitting up and pointing at the pill box on the bedside table. "And I just took my medicine."

"You know exactly what I'm talking about."

Madison lowered her head and smiled bitterly. "Zoe looks more like Elena than I do, right?"

Lorenzo didn't say anything, but he did turn around to look at her with a frown.

"I want to quit," Madison added.

"You sure about this?"

"Yes." She nodded. "I'm just a substitute in the first place. Now that you've found someone even better, I'll make room for her."

Lorenzo's eyes were deep as he stared at her. All of a sudden, he broke into a smile and asked, "Tell me, what exactly do you want? Money? A house? As long as it's within reason, I'll give you whatever you ask."

"I don't want anything."

Lorenzo's eyebrows shot up. "Really? You don't want anything? Your mother's medical fee is no trivial amount."

Madison faltered for a moment, but then she replied with renewed determination, "I'll figure something out."

"Your only work experience is as a secretary. You can only serve coffee, write emails, and sort out receipts. You don't have any special skills. Even if you find a new job, your salary won't be high."

"Then I'll work more than one job."

"Your mother has cancer. Even if you work a dozen part-time jobs, you won't be able to cover her monthly medical expenses."

Madison raised her head and locked eyes with him. "I can sell my body if it comes to that."

Lorenzo frowned. "Are you seriously willing to do that?"

"What's wrong? Isn't that what I've been doing in the past three years?"

Lorenzo smiled coldly. "If you say so."

"Then let's go through the formalities tomorrow," Madison said with finality.

"You've found someone new, haven't you?"

"What?" Madison's eyes widened in disbelief.

Lorenzo stubbed out the cigarette and looked at her with great interest. "Otherwise, why would you be in such a hurry to leave me?"

"What's the point in staying? It's just a waste of time. Don't you want me to give way to Zoe Harris?"

Lorenzo didn't refute, which meant that he acquiesced.

Madison took a deep breath and climbed out of bed. "I'm going to pack my things."

But the next second, the man grabbed her hand and pulled her back. She lost her footing and fell backwards onto the soft bed.

Lorenzo climbed on top of her.

She had been with him for three years and had gotten to know how he behaved.

At this moment, a bad feeling arose in her chest. She tried her best to push him away. "What the hell are you doing?"

Lorenzo unbuckled his belt and said, "I've paid you for this month, and you took my money, so do your job. Since your body's for sale, consider this as part of your job."

It was a long night.

When Madison got up the following morning, she found that her pillow was completely soaked. She felt shriveled up, as though all the water in her body had been turned into tears.

But why did she cry? She should've been relieved, right?

She didn't need to be the shadow of another person anymore, nor did she need to imitate that person's style, tone, makeup-she didn't need to mimic her anymore.

When her friend, Joanna Cooper, picked her up that morning, she was shocked. "Madison, it's only been a few days since I last saw you, but you look so haggard."

Madison didn't say anything and just smiled wryly.

She knew that Joanna was talking about her swollen, puffy eyes.

But she also knew that Joanna didn't mean to hurt her, so she didn't mind.

However, Joanna sensed that she said something wrong, so she quickly got out of the car to help Madison with her luggage.

Madison had only packed a small suitcase, so it was easy to put it in the trunk of the car.

Along the way, Joanna couldn't help but ask, "Are you sure you want to divorce him?"

Madison nodded firmly.

Joanna continued to ask, "You sure you won't miss him?"

Madison turned her head to look out of the window and said flatly, "There's nothing to miss."

"You're just saying that," Joanna said with a pout. "But it's good that you're finally leaving that bastard. You used to be so pretty and out-going, but after the three years with him, you've changed into a completely different person."

In the rearview mirror, Joanna could see that Madison not only had puffy eyes, but also dark circles around them. She looked like she barely got any sleep.

Catching her friend eyeing her in the rearview mirror, Madison explained, "I didn't sleep well last night."

"Then I'll play some soothing music for you. Close your eyes and get some rest. It's a long way. It'll take at least an hour. You should nap first."

"Okay." Madison didn't protest and closed her eyes.

But it seemed that God felt that she was not miserable enough. She had surrendered and accepted her reality, yet she was stabbed in the heart again upon hearing the music playing on the radio.

The lyrics went, "When you are looking at me...

I know you see someone else..."
