Chapter 6 Impossible

Sara noticed Tatiana's strange look towards the stranger, as well as the fact that the man was looking at her with irritation.

"You and Robson haven't been together for many years."

Sara closed her eyes, feeling disoriented, trying to fit this information into her mind. She remembered Robson's smiling face, the promise of being together forever. She had lost her mother, the love of her life, her past...

"Impossible..." she murmured breathlessly, panic spreading over her skin, tears streaming down her face. "I have no one else?"

"You have me."

The deep, grave voice of the unknown man made Sara feel a strange shiver run down her spine, especially due to what he had said.

"You...? Who are you?"

Rodrigo approached the bed but avoided touching her again. He looked at Tatiana in a silent request. He wanted to tell her himself that they were married. The doctor understood and gave him a nod of permission.

"I know this is going to be hard to understand right now..."

"Everything is incomprehensible," she murmured to herself and, for the first time since seeing him, paid attention to him.

He was a handsome man, but very serious. From his build, the way he walked and talked, and the little he had said, he seemed to think the world revolved around him. She hated people like that, conceited. His haircut was impeccable, not a strand out of place, and something deep inside her told her it would be fun and pleasant to run her fingers through his dark locks and mess them up.

She felt her face heat up as she realized where her thoughts were heading. She also noticed that he had said something to her and was awaiting her reaction, as he was staring at her intently.

"Sorry! What did you say?"

"That we got married four years ago."

~*~

What do you do when the world crashes down on your head? This question had been haunting Sara's mind for the past week.

Observing her reflection in the mirror, she lightly touched the scar on the top of her head, the only evidence of the accident she had a month ago. An accident she couldn't remember, no matter how hard she tried. Just like the last ten years...

She took a deep breath and noticed the subtle changes in her face and body. Her face was thinner, more mature, and probably due to her current state, melancholic. Her body had changed too. She had suffered so much for being the only one among her group of friends with almost nonexistent breasts; now she could notice them even under the loose and hideous hospital gown. She looked more like an adult woman.

"Of course, Sara, you're twenty-seven years old, did you expect to keep the body of a little girl?" She made a face at the words that came from within. She might look like a mature woman on the outside, but inside, it was a different story. She felt like a lost child facing the unknown world in front of her.

She picked up the brush on the sink and slowly ran it through her long, coppery hair. That had surprised her too. She preferred the convenience of short hair, just above her shoulders, but apparently, in the past years, she had decided to let it grow, reaching the middle of her back.

It was strange to look in the mirror and see a complete stranger, even if it was herself. Everything was so confusing, and the more she searched her mind, the more disoriented she became.

"Ouch! Damn!" She took a deep, effortful breath as a painful twinge shot through her head.

She dropped the brush and stumbled back to the bed. She lay down and looked at the nurse sleeping in the armchair.

Surely the woman would wake up with a lot of back pain. She hoped the salary compensated for the effort, as she hadn't left her side for a moment, always ready to attend to her every need, never leaving her alone for even a second. That bothered her, especially when she wanted to talk to her godmother, and the woman wouldn't take her eyes off her, attentive to every word, action, or gesture. She didn't complain because she knew she was paid to do that: to keep her damned eyes on her.

Resigned, she settled herself better in bed and turned her thoughts to everything that was happening to her. It had been a week since she woke up in that room, with impaired and forgotten memories of some events in her life, including being married to a handsome but very serious and reserved man.

She was scared, confused, and lost within herself.

She sighed as she remembered how Rodrigo, her forgotten husband, had been treating her in a very strange way. After informing her that they were married and that as soon as she was discharged from the hospital, he would take her to the apartment where they lived – of which she had no recollection – he left without saying anything else. No words of affection, no "don't worry, my dear," or a kiss on the cheek. Not that she wanted him to hug or kiss her, far from it; the problem was how he acted, cold and indifferent to her pain.

When had her taste in men changed completely? As far as she remembered, she preferred more sensual, cheerful men who showed their feelings. Her "husband" was far from being like that.

"At least he's a piece of eye candy." She smiled at the thought. That was undeniable, but it didn't change the fact that in her mind, she was dating someone else. Where was Rob?

Every time her godmother came to examine her, she had been embarrassed to ask if she knew anything about her boyfriend. After all, she was married, to a man she couldn't remember, but she was. Besides, the nurse was probably passing on information about everything she saw and heard to Rodrigo. It would be embarrassing to call for her boyfriend, or rather, her ex-boyfriend in this case, whom she still felt was current in her mind...
