Chapter 6 No.6

Deloria's POV

The next morning, I called my boss to ask for a day off as soon as I woke up.

The jewelry store was located near a high street, and it only got busy at night. So my boss readily agreed to my request.

Later, I had a brief chat with Elaine. After washing up, I returned to my room and started packing.

Maeve and I didn't have many clothes, and some of them came from thrift shops. Thanks to the good quality and design, they didn't look worn out even after repeated washings.

I folded and put all the out-of-season clothes in a cardboard box.

After filling one box, I straightened and rested for a few minutes.

As I was about to continue packing, my phone rang.

Seeing the caller ID, I immediately answered the phone. "Daphne, what's up?"

"We haven't seen each other for days. Got any plans this noon? How about having lunch together?" Daphne smiled.

I also beamed and said, "Lucky you. I took a day off today. So I'm available now."

"Awesome! I'll come pick you up. See you in 20 minutes!" Daphne exclaimed before hanging up the phone.

After taping up the box, I pushed it against the wall. Then I changed my clothes and went downstairs.

About ten minutes later, a white sports car pulled up beside me. Daphne waved and said, "Deloria, hop in."

I got into the car with a smile and fastened my seatbelt. Daphne headed straight for downtown.

While driving, she asked, "Are you still getting around by bus? Seriously, you should get a car. It'd be much more convenient."

"Easy for you to say. I can't afford it," I replied with a grin.

Daphne and I had known each other since high school. She was now the owner of a popular beauty salon. Over the years, she had helped me a lot, too. So I was grateful for Elaine and her.

When we arrived downtown, Daphne took me to an Italian restaurant.

"Tastes good." I nibbled at the tiramisu and nodded in content.

"If you like it, I'll order one more. My treat!" Daphne beamed at me.

I put down my fork and looked at her in confusion. "Why did you ask me out today?"

"It's my friend Jerry. He felt sorry for canceling on you last time. So he wanted to meet you again. I assured you that he really had something urgent to deal with. How about you..."

I interrupted her and whispered, "Daphne, I'm married."

"So what?" After a while, Daphne suddenly realized what I was talking about and gaped at me. "What did you just say? You're married? Where did you get a husband?"

I was amused by Daphne's reaction. "Yes, I'm married. I have you to thank for that, too."

I told Daphne how I met Gerald and married him that day.

"This is crazy!!" Daphne's eyes sparkled with curiosity. She immediately put down her glass and grabbed my arm, asking, "So, how's this guy?"

"Well, he's handsome!" I recalled Gerald's face and gave a hearty smile.

Then I continued, "He has a stable job at the Kircher Group and rents an apartment in Silver Lake community. Plus, he got a car. That's it."

"Gerald? I feel like I've heard of this name," Daphne muttered to herself.

"It's just a common name," I shrugged and said.

"Ah, poor Jerry," Daphne sighed, smiling as she spoke. "He's so unlucky. I've tried my best to pair you off with him, but he still missed out."

"It's okay. Stop making it sound like a great loss."

"Of course it is. You are my best friend," Daphne paused for a moment before cautiously asking, "Deloria, have you really thought it through? I mean, the whole marriage thing. I hope you didn't give up on love and marry some random guy just because of Brad."

Hearing the name Brad, I instinctively furrowed my brows.

He was my ex-boyfriend who had betrayed me. It was such a huge blow that I suffered from depression for a period of time. That was also when I lost part of my memory.

I shook my head and said, "I have gotten over him a long time ago. I do want to get married, and Gerald is a good match. I'll introduce you to him someday."

Daphne nodded and did not ask any further questions.

She changed the topic. "Are you still going to the class reunion next Friday? I heard Jonathan would be there. And they've booked the restaurant."

"Of course not," I immediately refused. "Stop bringing up Jonathan. I don't like him at all."

He had wooed me back at college, which bothered me a lot.

Hearing my complaint, Daphne giggled.

Just then, my phone rang.
