Chapter 5 The Only Choice

Brennan's eyes bore into Freya's, a fierce glint in them that made her quiver inside.

Freya mustered up all her courage to meet his gaze, but she felt like she was staring into a bottomless pit of darkness.

She was beginning to realize that the rumors about him were not exaggerated-this man was dangerous.

Biting her lip to stifle her nerves, Freya said in a meek voice, "I only agreed to marry you because it was a condition set by the Hayes family. I won't interfere with your work and life after we're married."

She tried to keep her composure and stay obedient, but it was hard with his piercing gaze fixed on her.

Brennan wasn't satisfied with her answer. "So, what benefits did the Hayes family give you?"

"They promised to sponsor my family's Healthbridge Hospital." Freya knew there was no point in lying or hiding the truth. "It's in financial trouble and may go bankrupt if it doesn't receive a substantial investment. The hospital is my mother's life's work, and I can't let it fail."

As an intern, Freya had no way of getting her hands on hundreds of millions of dollars.

Marrying into the Hayes family was her only shot at the moment.

But the day's events had opened her eyes to the dangerous world of the wealthy. It was a world that was dazzling and deadly, and definitely not suited for someone like her.

All she wanted was to be an intern at the hospital.

It might have been a grueling job, but at least it was free from the scheming and plotting that came with high society.

But now it was too late.

"So you sold yourself?" Brennan asked with a sneer.

Defeated, Freya admitted, "Theoretically, yes, but-"

Without letting her finish, Brennan interjected, "Quite the worth you have."

Freya's anger simmered beneath the surface at Brennan's callous words.

She clenched her fists, ready to snap back, but Brennan's haughty demeanor silenced her. "Got a problem?"

"No. You're not wrong." Freya gritted her teeth, masking her frustration with a fake smile. "After all, you are the almighty Brennan Hayes."

She realized that he had a talent for pushing her buttons, making her feel a surge of anger with just a few words.

However, she knew that showing her frustration would only give him satisfaction.

So, Freya repeated a calming mantra to herself, reminding herself that she was simply an employee working for Brennan, a short-tempered boss.

She convinced herself that enduring Brennan's scolding was a small price to pay to save Healthbridge Hospital.

Besides, Brennan wouldn't dare to fire her under the pressure of his family.

She realized that she had the upper hand in this situation.

With her anger dissipating, Freya put on a more sincere smile and told Brennan, "If you have any other questions, I'm happy to answer them all."

Brennan was taken aback by Freya's unexpected reaction.

He gazed at her with newfound respect, realizing that this woman was not one to be underestimated.

Brennan's mind raced as he pondered Sylvie's sudden interest in finding him a wife. He was certain that there was a deeper, more sinister motive at play.

He vowed to investigate the matter thoroughly, no matter what it took.

As Brennan was deep in thought, Freya, feeling awkward in the silence, approached him and offered to make his bed.

She rolled up her sleeves and got to work, completely unaware that her loose collar had slipped down, revealing a tantalizing glimpse of her ample bosom. Brennan couldn't believe his eyes. Was this woman trying to seduce him?

"Freya Walton! What are you doing?" Brennan gritted his teeth.

"I'm making the bed." Freya was taken aback by Brennan's sudden outburst.

Brennan's gaze burned into hers, and he spat out, "Come down!"

Freya was utterly baffled by Brennan's order. "What?"

Brennan didn't have the patience to explain himself, so he grabbed her by the arm and forcibly escorted her out of his bedroom.

"What are you doing?" Freya asked, visibly puzzled.

"The money will come through as promised, but only if you play your part as my nominal wife," Brennan warned. "Don't even think about crossing any lines or trying to seduce me."

With that, he slammed the door shut in her face, leaving Freya reeling from the shock of his accusation.

As she stood there, dumbfounded, it suddenly dawned on her that Brennan thought she was trying to seduce him.

The very thought made her blood boil. How dare he even entertain such a notion?
